"We're the highest-paid narrow-body (jet) pilots in the free world," he said. "I wish we could beat our chests and say SWAPA did that, but it's only because events ... brought everyone else down below us."

SWAPA UNION LEADER

SW needs a lower cost structure to rejuvenate the "Southwest Effect" to support planned growth.

It sounds lik he's being realistic and managing expectations as opposed to pulling some crazy scheme out of his a$$ and trying to convince his folks that all they need to do to make it happen is believe.

I am thinking profitablity based raises will be the only $$$$ we will see for some time to come.

The quote is taken out of context. The SWA guy was illustrating that their rates are the highest because everyone else's were cut.

The issue that the quote addresses is now that the majors are making money, the people who gave up pay/QOL during the bankruptcies/famine are now due to reap the rewards their sacrifices bought.
