AA73, I like the last part of your statement.
I was talking to a manager in JFK back in '99. Jetblue was just starting up and I said that customer service needed improvement to compete. He ended it by saying "All the other airlines operate this way, so why should we spend the money to make it better?"
Unfortunately that still rings true today.
