"What will Prater do"

Just what he has done up to this point, nothing. I am sure other majors, ie UAL, DAL, CAL, NWA are watching this closely.

I hope nobody is counting on ALPA National to stand up and do something. Prater is in over his head.

A bit optimistic to say the least... sending in a card for a NMB vote is little or no risk - actually voting for usapa in the current situation is very different.

Oh yeah, there are no more furloughs.
So you are telling me there are 2400 guys out on medical. WOW.......

Furloughed guys that signed the "leave it letter" are not eligible to sign a card. Only active, medical, or furloughed pilots are eligible.

Amen, brother. Nobody is debating on whether or not Captain Prater is in way over his head. But let's be serious, USAPA in no way, shape, or form represents the pilots of the NEW US Airways. It is a tool for the OLD US Airways pilots to try and crush the AWA pilots.

Not remembering any signature or requirement to agree with the terms of the "offer" of employment to return.

Don't worry about us though. There are plenty of other things on the plate for AAA/AWA.

I don't want to start a flame war so please don't flame here. As a new hire I am just trying to understand the situation a little better.

Does it seem that an overwhelming majority of East pilots are in favor of new representation or is just a large group? Is the main focus of USAPA to change the seniority integration award or to provide better representation for both East and West pilots? Are there any West pilots that feel that USAPA would better represent their interests?

Hard to say. Many just signed the card as a form of protest and have no intention of actually voting for USAPA.

We know they won't give better representation to the West pilots!

They know the integration can't be changed so their strategy is to delay it as long as possible. As for "better" representation, there is no such thing. By that I don't mean ALPA is great but I do know that no other union will do any better. This is my conclusion after having been a Teamster, APA, and ALPA member at three different carriers. I'm also part of a class-action lawsuit against ALPA on behalf of the ex-TWA pilots. In the end I'm a pragmatist.

The purpose of USAPA is to get around the ALPA Merger Policy that they agreed to abide by. The proof: had their expectations been met by the arbitrator I guarantee there wouldn't be a decert drive.

Dorky. Is it that they're too cheap to get the stripe removed, or are their egos too large to allow themselves to recognize that they're back in the right seat? Either way, they're still dorks.

Dorky? Cheap? Dorks? Big Egos?....perhaps....but I don't think so. I know a handful of them and they're great guys, not like you opine, Andy.

For the most part, many of them where Captains for many years. Through the bankruptcies and fleet reductions, they were permitted to keep the stripes, but change the hat.

The name calling seems below your rank, sir. I would expect better of you considering your listed profile.
 
If the company isn't going to pay to have that stripe removed then I don't blame them. The same thing happen to me after 9/11. No one knew how long the displacement would last, for me it was 2 and 1/2 years. And I be damn if I was going to spend my time and gas to drive over to the alteration shop and pay $9 just to have the fourth stripe taken off, only to spend another $9 to have it put back on sometime later.

As a new hire pilot to US Airways...How do you not know the answer to all of this?

They aren't hard to pick out. They're the only guys wearing jackets in the middle of summer so everyone can see they WERE a Captain. Pretty silly. It's particularly petty when they wear the jacket and not the hat. What are they really trying to prove? Who do they think they are fooling?

My last company had the same policy. After my forced downgrade, it only took one trip on line before I decided to go ahead and dress like an FO. The truth is, nobody except them cares that they were a Captain and it confuses the agents.

I used the list from the ALPA website someone made up. It uses the combined list and is a dynamic list. I put in the date (I used Dec. 1st) and it showed the combined list with retirements removed. It cannot show the medicals so I'm sure they are in there. Anyway, on the combined list, "save dave" is number 4545 on Dec. 1st, 2007. Of the 1700 furloughed, I think only 500-700 came back. So the whole list should be between 5000-5200. I think you will find this to be a fairly accurate number.
 
I'd be surprised if more than 300 went back.

What Prater and ALPA should do is sit back and see how the vote goes down. If the USAir pilots vote in a new union, then say it was nice working with you. ALPA is not, or rather, should not be, in business simply for itself. As a representative of the pilots who should be looking out for the best interests of the pilots, ALPA should be more than willing to say goodbye to a pilot group that decides its best interests lie with different representation.
