US Airways will stop movies on domestic flights

Thursday, July 10, 2008

(07-10) 04:53 PDT Tempe, Ariz. (AP) --
Better bring a book on flights. US Airways says it will start removing in-flight entertainment systems on domestic flights in November to save about $10 million annually in fuel and other costs.
Spokesman Phil Gee says the movie systems weigh about 500 pounds each, forcing planes to use more fuel to get around the country.
Jet fuel costs have skyrocketed in recent years, slashing profits and leading to thousands of layoffs and flight cuts throughout the industry.
Gee says US Airways will cut the movie systems from about 200 aircraft. But it will keep movies in its widebody aircraft for international flights and trips to Hawaii.
US Airways says it will test a lighter, seat-back TV system later this year. However, Gee says a new entertainment system is a long way off.

Here it is! The answer to all of our problems with the cost of fuel. And it was right in front of us all along! Take that, other airlines who are installing high end entertainment systems that the public is asking for!

Another in a long series of embarrassments. I suppose a lot of them we're MEL'ed anyway.

Easties Suck !!!!!
No you Westies suck even more!!! (SO THERE}

I figured I would save everyone the 4 or 5 pages that we all know this thread will probably turn into.

Parker spoke to our ground school a while back. Someone asked him about the in-seat entertainment systems and if we'd ever be getting them. His logic was if you want to watch movies then bring your laptop.

remove 500 pounds..to save gas thats sad.....in that case theyll save a heck of a lot more without any passenger weight.

They're literally trying to stay in business. Yes the public demands top of the line entertainment, but if the numbers don't work then they've got to be fixed somehow.

"Thanks for flying US Airways..."

Believe me, when selecting an air carrier, the ability to watch a crappy J-Lo movie is way near the bottom of my list.

Give them a break, at least they are putting up a fight against oil prices with the weight saying it'll save about 14 million a year. People don't complain about Southwest not having it. It sucks but hey what are you going to do...oh yeah "just raise ticket prices"

A good friend of mine which lives close to chief of marketing for us airways and he was told that they're working on to do away with frequent flyers miles in return of some icentives but wasn't told what it was. He was told that their main concern is the chairman preferred customers since they're the bread and butter and the coach seats will have certain period to cash or redeem thier miles or bonuses.
And no my friend is not a pilot if you were wondering how a pilot can live in the same neighborhood of marketing executive.:puke:

Sat in coach on an 8 hour cross the Atlantic flight on USAir last week. It wasn't very enjoyable. To start we all boarded the plane, got seated, and then the captain comes on and says MX needs to fix the smoke detectors and it will be an hour and half delay and we can't get off the plane. They didn't charge us the $5 for the headsets to make up for the delay . The seats were incredibly uncomfortable (A330) they really have them crammed in there on that A330, they served one meal which was a small boxed sized lunch meal (I brought my own food so I didn't have to suffer), they only came thru twice during the whole flight for drinks (and the prices have gone up on beer and liquor). I know times are a changing but I also fly alot on Foreign carriers across the pond and the service is 100times better. I'm gonna take my family on a European vacation soon and I sure won't be taking a US carrier, I'll take one of the foreign carriers for better service....especially since I'll be dropping a lot of my own coin on the flights..

I agree with you on the service, and from what you said it sounded bad.

Just wondering though, I wonder what the price difference is on TransAtlantic on American carriers vs. Foreign ones.

On an 8-hour flight? That's incredible. I was on a two-hour flight on Midwest a couple of days ago, and they came through twice for drinks!

Don't worry, pretty soon there won't be a US Airways to complain about. This is just another desperate act from a company that's in real trouble but continues to blow sunshine up the employee's and public's ass about how well positioned they are to "weather" the current environment. They're grasping at straws so the end must be closer than I originally thought. In a way I'm relieved because this is just the catalyst I needed to get out of this crap industry and see what's behind door #2..........

I always enjoyed riding on the 330, felt the cabin and seats were more comfortable than the 777. I also thought US air had a top notch entertainment system . Maybe you are just getting fatter??? You will fly the carrier that offer's the cheapest air fare and post another whiney post, I guarantee it!

You guys have it all wrong! Come on! The amount of money saved by removing the systems will allow ****************************** Parker to take home even more in pay. What self respecting airline pilot dosent want to save weight so their alcoholic, scumbag CEO can make more money?

$14 million a year, or $3.5 million a quarter?

That's a friggin' rounding error.

Didn't he buy half a mill of LCC a few weeks ago?
How's that make you feel?

Before you get on your foreign carrier don't forget to stop at wal-mart and buy all the crap made in China, then jump in your foreign car and drive to the airport. Don't forget to get your wallstreet so you can look in dismay at the reports of the weakening US economy.
