US Airways to Update Employees
By MICHELINE MAYNARD

Having bought time from a federal loan board to fix its sagging operations, US Airways plans to update employees tomorrow on the state of its affairs.

In an e-mail message sent to employees yesterday, David N. Siegel, chief executive of US Airways, said the airline would hold a midafternoon telecast, via the Internet, to discuss the challenges it faced.

Other corporate meetings were restricted to employees, but Mr. Siegel invited family members to watch the broadcast to learn about what steps US Airways might take.

He invited employees to send questions by e-mail before the meeting.

"I urge you and your families to view this presentation because US Airways is at a significant crossroad," Mr. Siegel wrote. "All of us will be faced with making choices that will affect the future of the company, and my hope is that this information will help you make informed decisions."

An airline spokesman declined to elaborate on what Mr. Siegel would discuss.

US Airways, which emerged from bankruptcy protection one year ago next week, is struggling to avoid a second Chapter 11 filing. On March 12, the federal Air Transportation Stabilization Board agreed to amend the covenants of $900 billion in loan guarantees that formed the basis of the airline's restructuring. Without the action, the airline would have been in default of its loan package.

As part of that agreement, US Airways made a $250 million payment on its loan balance. It agreed to cut its losses significantly this year and to post a profit in 2005. It also won revisions that would allow it to sell its assets more easily and to keep some proceeds from any asset sales.

To achieve that profit target, the airline needs to cut its costs by about 25 percent, analysts say. US Airways is seeking another round of contract concessions from its labor unions, which granted it two rounds of wage and benefit cuts in bankruptcy. The airline is also considering whether to sell some assets, including its East Coast shuttle and US Airways Express commuter operation, in a bid to raise money.

Only its pilots union has agreed to negotiate with the company. But without reductions in labor costs, the airline cannot hope to achieve its cost-cutting goal, said Robert W. Mann Jr., an industry analyst in Port Washington, N.Y.

"They really are faced with a bleak set of alternatives," Mr. Mann said.

Nothing like accuracy in reporting:

"On March 12, the federal Air Transportation Stabilization Board agreed to amend the covenants of $900 billion in loan guarantees that formed the basis of the airline's restructuring".

Hmmmn. $900 billion would sure buy a lot of lipstick to put on that pig.

Seriously. though, at some point, you have to wonder when it stops being a loan and starts becoming charity. Whne is the Gummint Cheese just being used to undercut the carriers that aren't receiving the cheese?

ATSB Gives US Airways Narrow Window
Under the new deal, US Airways must "significantly narrow" losses in 2004, regain profitability in 2005 and maintain an unrestricted cash balance of $700 million. The company's current unrestricted cash balance is roughly $925 million.

"This agreement gives us a narrow window for management and labor to ... make the changes necessary to get back to profitability," said US Airways Chairman David Bronner.

It's not such a great deal. The ATSB voted 2:1 in favor of letting USAir reduce it's it's required unrestricted cash balance from $925 to $700 mill. Inturn all USAir had to do was give the Gov. $250 mill in cash.

What they did gain was the ability to Sell assets and KEEP 25% of what ever cash they get from the asset. Not good.

Funny, the United States grants billions in loans that are never paid pack to bail out countries in economic despair but it's own airlines have to pay it back by a deadline in cash.

You aren't suggesting that we (Federal Government) expect to be paid in accordance with the terms of a loan? What are you, some kind of law abiding realist ?

Why should countries repay a loan when they can cry to the 'World Bank' and get relief, sometimes total and permanent. That's called a handout under false pretenses.

I'm so enraged by the actions of OPEC lately. It's stupifies me how ineffective our Federal Government has been on this issue.
Could it be the FEDS are complicitious in keeping the cost of oil high to benefit the Oil Industry ? You think ?

Before you go off accusing me of being a Democrat, save your breath. I've voted Republican since 1980 ...

The next time the Saudi Royal Family needs a software update or maintenance for the military hardware they bought from us, we should tell them that the cost will be a 5 year contract price of $18.00 / barrel. Let's see them defend their royal assets when we shut off the weapons. They might think twice about reducing production.

These prices will cause the 'recovery' to implode. I can see it now (or in November) ... President Bush II is ejected for the same reason(s) his father lost ...

I need a drink or long walk ...

Why do you think gas prices are what they are? Let's examine some factors that has led to this:

1. Gluttony - Every SUV, every boat-sized luxury car, and **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** well EVERY Hummer owner is guilty of hyper-consumption thereby driving up the price. Suppy and demand economics 101.

2. Stupidity - The Bush administration continues to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve at the very moment gas prices are highest. No doubt ol' "W" and his sidekick puppet Cheney are profiting handsomely from this in their personal portfolios.

3. Corruption - While scientists and other non-bought & paid for politicians were calling for government-mandated CAFE standards and extensive funding into alternative fuel projects, where was Bush? Oh yea....taking that research money and giving it to greedy corporations and fat cat rich friends in the likes of massive tax cuts.

They always find some market trigger to blame it on. The hard truth is that the world's oil supply will be gone in 40 years. Kaput. So we better fund a research program into hydrogen energy on the scale of the Manhattan Project or else watch these prices skyrocket. Then we could flip OPEC the bird and watch as they sink into oblivion.

On a parting thought....if we did all I suggest and did in fact come up with technology for a new clean burning alternative fuel that was in unlimited supply, I hope we share it with the rest of the world.....for free....because that would be the right thing to do. I doubt any republican would come up with such a "democratic" idea as that.

I used to be a republican too.....until I saw the light.

I'm so enraged by the actions of OPEC lately. It's stupifies me how ineffective our Federal Government has been on this issue.

The govt apparently doesn't want to be seen "begging" OPEC to reduce the cost of gas.

Not sure it would do any good anyway. It's likely most of OPEC wants to see the end of a Bush administration---what better way than to drive up prices? If gas is at $2 a gallon this summer, Bush's goose is will be toasted, if not cooked.

Now THATS a man of my heart, but why settle for five years. Just make all the military hardware we sell them, have an epiration date, in this day with computers that should be easy enough thorugh a built in chip, they want it renewed? Well, I guess oil stays cheap!

did any one see this telecast? i was talking to a PSA pilot about it and we were both interested to hear what he had to say...

That has to be one of the worst corporate presentations I have ever seen or heard. I still didn't hear any real plan. Most of what was said should of been implemented on a daily basis right now. Well maybe he considers more furloughs, cuts and threats (although vieled) a plan.

With leadership like that it is a miracle they have made it to this point.
