Can someone tell me where to find UPS pilot hiring minimums?
Or, if someone knows, can you post their mins here?
I can not seem to find anything on their web site.
Thank You
rwelch

The unofficial hiring mins are 1,000 hours turbine pic. I've not seen that number published but heard it referenced by several folks in the hiring department.

To apply on the internet, go to this website:

http://www.upsjobs.com/

Thank You for the response.

I have been to that web page but found nothing that had to do with pilot hiring.
There was a section for applying to a full time position. I assume that is what you are referring to.

Thanks again

Since they are currently not hiring pilots, there is no stated job openings for pilots on this website. When they resume hiring, they will post it there. To apply, you first need to create a resume online. It's a fill-in-the-blank form with the opportunity for you to cut and paste your resume at the end. Once this resume is created, you can submit it to any of the listed job openings. You can update the resume any time. There has been indicatations from management that they will start hiring again soon. For up to date information on hiring, you can call the UPS Hiring hotline at (800)241-2357.

Sorry I couldn't give you better info on the hiring mins, but from what I've seen it's about 1,000 turbine PIC(min) with about 7,000 hours total time (avg).

Thanks for all the great info

Is it 1,000 Hrs turbine PIC in any turbine airplane? Is C-208 time included or is it Multi turbine PIC?

Good question! The recruiting pamphlet I have lists the following minimums:

1. ATP Written
2. Comercial ME
3. FE Written or Cert
4. Radio Cert
5. 21 years of age
6. Current First Class medical
7. ATP - Preferred
8. Four Year degree - preferred

The flight time summary asks for the following numbers:

In addition to all your flight time broken down by SE, ME, PIC, SIC, Instr, Last 6 mos, and student, they ask you to list the turbo jet and turboprop aircraft flown along with total sic, pic and fe time in type. Then they ask for hours in a certified multi-pilot or crew aircraft as PIC and SIC.

To finally answer your quesion, I don't think they differentiate between SE and ME turbine time. I do think they want to see some "crew" experience in the 121, 135 or military environment though. I don't know of anyone that's gone from single engine turboprops to a UPS flying job. If you were a ground instructor at UPS with that experience, they might buy it, but if UPS or FedEx is your goal, I'd suggest getting some crew time at a regional or corporate operation after you get the 1,000 hour turbine PIC.

Sorry for being beating the question to death! I'll post any new info I find on this subject.

Does UPS allow for any kind of a military conversion on flight time like some other companies? If so, is it in writing somewhere that could be used as a reference if its use needed to be defended?

Thanks,
MP

The flight time summary does not ask for the .3 adjustment to your flight time. I'm pretty sure the HR folks understand the difference and take it all into account when they evaluate your flight time summary.

The good news is that your pic time is defined by part 61 (sole manipulator and appropriately rated).

Primary Time

Good question, but if I understand it right, you can only count Primary time as PIC time if you are the Aircraft Commander or have a type rating in the airplane. That's the "appropriately rated" part of the reg there. If in doubt, I would (and did) just count whatever non-AC time you have ALL as SIC time and let them credit you for it otherwise if they see fit. It's always best to understate your credentials - they will appreciate your integrity at the interview.

Hey Jose, if the guy is correct in his response, then I really don’t see the need for yours.

I'm not sure if specific min.s are published. I have heard as a rule of thumb 1000 hours PIC turbine and around 4000 hours TT. With that said, I have spoken and know some hired with less than the 1000 PIC/4000TT. It is also true many have met and exceeded the 1000/4000TT. I believe your TT and experience is evaluated for quality and how competitive you may be against other applicants. I hope this helps.

Best of luck.

In my class the flight times ranged from 2000TT (military) to over 10,000+ Civilian. There is no ryhme nor reason to it. Although getting some help from a Manager at UPS (i.e. LOR, or personal phone call to HR) helps immensely. The manager needs not be a Pilot type. But the higher the manager the better.

Hope this helps.

I understand that you have to meet the mins of multi-engine fixed wing turbine PIC time but does UPS allow you to count helo time anywhere on the application? Some companies (JetBlue, SouthWest, FedEx) won't even let you list it.

Perfer Freight Dogs?

I was curious if UPS perfers people with freight time?
Seeing how they understand the crazy schedule.

Not really sure it matters. It is about 50/50 military civilian. A few in my class that were civilian flew freight, both large and small operators.

If you have the time and some help on the inside then you stand a good chance.

No, you don't have to have the 1000 pic turbine, because I didn't.
They are extremely flexible and they absolutely love people who have flown night freight (and survived) and want to do it for the rest of their lives.

I did have a caravan driver in my class who had 800 pic on the caravan and no pic in a multi turbine, and only 500 pic recip multi and less than 4000 total.

If you get the interview the only thing they are interested in is your attitude. Know everything about the company and you are in.
To get the interview however you must have an internal rec.

UPS Guys,

If the 1000 PIC isn't had do they look at AC flown. I have over 1000 hours in the 757/767 and type rated in it. Also have 727 time as well as past 727 night frieght experience.

Also wondering how they look at airline guys, I am not furloughed but am considering going back to the dark side. A lot to be said for flying PAX at a major.

Thanks for your responses.

bogberto,

I threw boxes in college for UPS and made sure that was in my resume. I asked about it during my interview and they said they noticed it. I am certain it helped.

AAflyer:
Would you leave AA to go to UPS if you weren't facing the possibility of another round of furloughes? Just curious if you think the quality of life and security is that much better at the freight side vs. pax in the long run? Good luck.

AA Flyer:

UPS defines PIC per Far Part 1 (sole manipulator and appropriately rated) so I believe you might be close to the turbine PIC requirement. I have heard of folks in the past getting hired without the 1000 hour turbine PIC but it is something they look for.

As for hiring from other major airlines, they got burned a few years back by the Delta and AA guys who were recalled. I don't know that it would work against you now, as things have changed significantly. They just want to see that you "bleed brown".

Sorry...no new rumors to report!
