JAs............

at least we can say "not available" without repercussions, and I will take brown FO JA pay over regional Cpt JA pay any day of the week. My point is, in spite of what you all hear, we need bodies we are short staffed. Good luck to all.

Well, we get to refuse a JA once, I believe and if they call you again, you essentially have to take it. I have my cell phone set up so that when they call, they automatically get my voicemail and the phone never rings. No chance of me answering by mistake and if they can't get a hold of you, one-on-one, then there is no problem.

I also agree that a FO JA at UPS is definitely much better than a CA JA at some crappy regional, such as I am priveleged to work for. My point was more to the effect of not being able to escape that aspect of the regionals that rely on JAs by going to, what I imagine, is a pretty decent company like UPS that would not resort to those sorts of tactics. I'm sure they don't rely on the JA to get trips covered, but maybe they do....

I also gather that a JA from UPS is much different than a JA at a regional. Do you have to answer the phone? Or can you just ignore as I do now?

Also was wondering if there was any comment in regards to the post I made just prior to the JA one, about the online ap site.....

You do not have to answer your phone unless you are on reserve at UPS.

The current application fiasco makes me ashamed of my employer. Keep checking the site and do what you can to apply.

That's what I figured. I would have been shocked at any other answer....

Manfred, be prepared to be shocked when the fresh faced new hire mgt captain comes a knocking on your hotel door with the pass key. you may not have to answer the phone but would like to hear your reason for not being available on a layover.

and ..... yes this has happened more then once.

...and what were the consequences? (for management that is)

Exactly! Does your contract stipulate that you have to be available on a layover?? Meaning that you have to take calls even if you are in rest? I understand having to be contactable, as in , someone can leave me a message and when I get it, I have been contacted.

no the contract does not state you have to be available on a layover. perhaps i missread the above posts. However once contacted... ie the mgt pilot at your door, consider yourself contacted. These events happened while the company was trying to reschedule crewmembers that where in contractual rest at a layover hotel. These where not JA issues on scheduled days off.

There have been no consequences for mgt with this issue that I am aware of.

sorry if i mixed things up .... long trip

Not a problem. I could see my company having something like that in our contract, or even worse, come up with some special policy that would require us to be available as they are so fond of doing. I don't know though, if one of our mgmt pilots happened to come to your hotel room, and you answered the door, if that would be considered to have been contacted....

Why on earth would you open the door?

This reminds me of a funny story one of our pilots told me. Similar situation... he's sound asleep on a layover and some guy starts pounding on his door "claiming" he's a UPS mangler... guy yells at him to go away... mangler keeps pounding so he calls the cops and tells them a crazy man is pounding on his door and threatening him!

I've always enjoyed using the following excuse... "Gosh... I wish you had spoken to me just a little sooner because I would relish the opportunity to reduce my crew rest and help you out of another short-sighted, self-inflicted scheduling predicament... BUT I just had a beer!" This next part is key. With a well developed laryngeal finesse (thanks to my Sigma Nu brothers for their guidance in my teachings) I'm reliably able to muster a good belch for increased plausibility at this point and I readily admit it gives me a juvenile but nevertheless satisfying joy to burp into the scheduler's ear! I usually go for the "gold" with tonal quality, volume, duration, etc... and treat them to a real hum-dinger! :D

Hey Triple BBB....what if you say "I can't"? Does that cover not available? That's what I told them last week.

A big CAUTION flag Jerry. The term "not available" has a long grievance/discipline/labor history here and is specifically utilized when not taking a JA. If the company calls with a JA and you ARE available... you are contractually obligated to operate it. Call the IPA if you disagree. (Just a heads up.)

A pass key? Are you saying the manager opens the crewmember's hotel room and comes on in?

after many phone calls and much knocking....... yes. much like the maids who are unable to see a do not disturb sign. This was done out of concern for the aircrew,..... as there might have been a health issue making the crewmember unable to respond. <g>

i didnt mean to start a neg point here, I had just misread the discussion and am bored waiting for my next reschedule from the man, Like somebody else said, if a crewmember is "unavailable" for a ja at ups they can turn down the offer. This is much better then alot of places.

I think you're covered Mega since the scheduler didn't push it further and ask if you are "refusing" to operate it... but I'd switch to the approved "not available" next time. "I can't" begs the question, "Why not?" "Not available" requires no further explanation (and don't offer one) per the outcome of a number of grievances/disciplinary cases years ago.

Thanks for the info BBB.

BTW, do you know specifically where in the contract it talks about this? I did a quick search and I didn't find anything.

I suggest calling the IPA... it's a result of grievances/disciplinary hearings/case history. There might be an LOA floating around. I remember distinctly this being discussed at GMM's in SDF years ago... was a hot issue around the '97 Teamsters strike.

Hate to beat a dead horse...

I've been to UPSJobs, FlightInfo, and APCF and searched till I'm blue in the face. I can't tell if my app is an '07 or an '06. Since I filled it out online on Christmas '06, I would have to conclude that it's an '06. When I search the app via my ss#, it comes up as "active" and no "!" next to any box. Am I ok or do I need to fill out another app to be good for '07??

I can't find anything on the site about an '07 app and have checked and re-checked many times a day as many days as possible.

I can't figure out what the heck is going on. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ticker,
I'm in the same boat as you in that I have no problems updating my app, nor do I have a "!" next to my profile (which was filled out last fall under the previous "new system"). Everything seems to work fine like it always has, which makes me wonder if I, too, am missing something......

If you filled out an application in 2006 it is a 2006 application. If you have filled out an app. in 2007, it is a 2007. I hear people are having a tough time finding the proper link, but I believe that is a UPS HR problem.
