BIRMINGHAM, AL -
We have breaking news out of East Birmingham this morning where a large plane has crashed near the Birmingham airport.

According to initial reports a UPS Cargo Plane has crashed near 19th Avenue North and North East Lake Boulevard. Alabama's 13 has a crew on the scene and according to the crew the plane is burning and the crew is not allowed to get closer due to explosions. There have now been atleast 3 explosions. There could be debris covering about half a mile.

Again Alabama's 13 has a crew on the scene and will bring you the latest as we receive more information.

When I saw the headline this morning, I was sure that I was going to find out that it was some small airplane and the media had screwed it up calling it UPS. This is really a shock.

This picture shows the Cockpit somewhat intact, but the Pilots were reportedly found approximately 150 yards away from the crash site. Did they walk out of the Aircraft only to succumb to their injuries after the fact? Very tragic. Prayers with the families of the crew.

I doubt both would. They had to have been ejected...... But you never know by that picture. Sad for sure.. Prayers to families..

Can't get the photo to post but there is a different photo of the wreckage from the left side of the cockpit that shows Door L1 as being fully open with a clear view of the cockpit from the outside. It still looks like it was possible the crew would have been able to get out of the aircraft on their own if they survived the initial impact. There will be a lot of questions to be answered in the days and weeks ahead.

The forward instrument panel/underfloor are probably now positioned feet of where they should be, looking at that pic. I'm not trying to be graphic but the the nose/cockpit structure isn't exactly an armored tank.

Big runway closed this morning until 5am. Crash appears to have happened short of the shorter runway (rwy 18).

God bless the families and friends of the pilots.

Condolences to the family and friends of the pilot and copilot. Tragedies like these are difficult to understand.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you

It's a shame, in today's times, that we lose our fellow pilots in this way.

I expected bits and pieces, but was shocked that there was a large piece of the cockpit. The Fire Chief was quoted as saying it was a "grim scene" which doesn't sound too promising for survival after impact. One of the photos looks like the 9g bulkhead or netting busted lose and the freight came forward.

Godspeed to the crew and families and the first responders also.
