Unusual airline call signs

Don't know about the military version but "snowshoe" is used by Heritage Flight, a Burlington, VT based charter management outfit with Citations, Challengers and King Airs.

"mermaid" is used by Air Alsie, a Danish charter company.

How 'bout "Candler"? I think it is/was an American Eagle callsign, always heard it en masse going into DFW. Someone's name?

If I recall the story correctly, the home of ASA being Atlanta is also (obviously) the home of Coca-Cola. And Coca-Cola was first mixed in the Atlanta pharmacy of Asa Candler on May 8, 1886.

It was ASA before they changed to Acey. Don't know the history, however.

I always thought that was a very clever callsign. Asa Griggs Candler was one of a kind- he bought the Coke formula waaaay back when, and the rest is history. Did some amazing things for Atlanta.

Well, I was always a Pepsi type and a yankee, so I wasn't aware of the ties with ATL or ASA (the airline) or Asa Candler. Neat story! Thanks for the info, Propsync, SoCentralRain, and Sig.

Still think the merger callsign of Kalitta and Aer Lingus would be killer.

It was ASA before they changed to Acey. Don't know the history, however. I always liked 'Red Rock' (think that's what it was) for National out of Vegas.

It was "Asea" before "Candler" and now back to "Asea". "Asea" = Atlantic Southeast.

For all you children of the 80's, you might remember the call signs "Palm" and "Apple" used by Air Florida and New York Air respectively. Another interesting call sign was "Redrock". That was used by National Airlines, the 757 operator out of LAS before they ceased operations several years ago. Another unique call sign heard out west is "Janet" the 737 operator that flys goverment workers in and out of Area 51 fronm LAS.

ok francis, a very senior CA, top 20 gave me one of his original business cards with the original logo and it has a FLL address on it, maybe it was just a base then, at that time, they only had a couple 737's.
