United Airlines plans to rehire about 300 laid-off pilots during 2006, the airline told employees Tuesday.
The first group of 20 pilots will rejoin the Elk Grove Township-based carrier Jan. 9, with more to follow as United adjusts its fleet to get the most use of its aircraft and adds flights to current and new destinations.
“That’s great news,” says Steve Derebey, a Boeing 737 captain for United and a spokesman for the Air Line Pilots Association International, the union representing United’s 6,200 pilots. “The more the better and the sooner the better.”
United furloughed 2,172 pilots after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks sent the U.S. aviation industry into a tailspin. Furloughed pilots receive no pay or benefits from the airline but are eligible to regain their jobs, based on seniority, if United needs to increase staffing.
The nation’s second-largest carrier has brought back 234 pilots in 2005, says Mr. Derebey.

So what that they have international routes. What's the point of coming back to work there for crappy pay, no pension and crappy work rules?

Hey, I know why...because this is the new "standard" in the industry. When the dust settles UAL will have the industry leading contract of the Major "legacy" carriers. Get use to it. It will take this generation of pilots their entire career to get contracts back to the old level only to end up retiring and never enjoying the benefits. Then a whole new cycle will begin and that generation of pilots will find themselves where you do today. Its all smoke and mirriors.

I for one am not going back. Take one off the list.

If you add in just a little cabatoge, UAL is just as screwed as the other legacy carriers. They have to change or die and UAL continues to prove that it can't change.

I wouldn't worry too much about Emirates in the North American market just yet. They certainly won't threaten any of the North Atlantic traffic to and from Europe as the yields are just too low to bother. Serving only one city in North America and none yet in South America, they are not in competition with U.S. airlines.

Emirates' main focus has been on the Europe to Asia/Australia market. This because Dubai is a perfect geographical hub between the areas. A nice half way stopping point as well as a booming business and tourist destination in it's own right.

In time it's possible Emirates will get beyong rights from Auckland or Australia. Then you could see them up against UAL and NWA in the Pacific to North America market. First you'll see a few more North American destinations. But again, those hardly are competition for United as no U.S. carrier serves the GCC countries.

Congrats to recallees.

Do recalled pilots keep their longevity for pay purposes? Or does someone who was furloughed their first year at UAL go back to $30/hr?

UAL will rise again!
 
Why doesn't United does us all a favor. Instead of recalling people, pay your freaking bills or else flush this terd you call an airline.

I think UAL is doing what any smart small business would. Like the free ride our little illegal neighbors are taking in this country, UAL is using politics to bleed the tax payer for everything they can. Ironically, the ones who ultimately pay the price are the college educated, the servicemen fighting for freedom, and every other decent hardworking American.

What exactly is UAL getting from the taxpayer? More specifically, what did they get that any other airline didn't?

No longevity for pay purposes. You go back with the same longevity that you left with.

1. A judge on the take.

2. A pass to pay their outstanding bills at LAX, SFO, DIA and ORD.

3. The privilege of self-looting by senior management.

All of which is ultimately passed on to hardworking consumers.

Care to provide direct proof on #1? Since you seem to know what is really going on (something illegal perhaps), tell us what you know.

How many taxes and fees did the legacy carriers like UAL pay over many years that allowed facilities like the ones you mentioned to grow and prosper in the first place?

Speaking of looting, how about the UAL-looting Captain X scab that started your operation?

There are so many pilots leaving US Airways through normal retirements, resignations and medicals that even though they are parking aircraft, there will probably be no need to park airplanes.
