Ok, here go a few:

* IAI Arava - we called it a flying watermelon
* Blackburn Beverly - what the...???
* Northrop (i think) Pioneer - modern tri-motor??? pleaz
* All british WWII bombers (ok flame me now)

For every P-51 there are countless nasty lookin planes out there!

:D :D

Ugliest aircraft

My instructor told me he thought that all airplane are beautiful.

The Russians developed this huge radial-powered biplane after WWII that's not particularly elegant, in my .02 opinion. I don't remember the name of it at the moment. It was featured in an AOPA Pilot some months ago.

The Brits developed some biplane transports during the early '30s that were not really pretty. They were flown by Imperial Airways, the predecessor to BOAC.

The Pregnant Guppy variant of the Boeing Stratocruiser was a terrible corruption of a beautiful airplane.

You're referring to the AN-2, and that plane is ugly, but in a BEAUTIFUL WAY!!! I'd love to have that beast in my hangar one day. The thing looks like it's made to rock n roll, and you can get for less than $70,000.

AN-2

That's it. It looks like you would need the arms of a sumo wrestler to roll that airplane into a bank.

Bet it hauls a ton of trash, though.

Well I am going to have to say that the 207 I have to fly every once in a while is the ulgiest airplane I have ever seen

I forgot the Shorts Skyvan...

How bout the Avid Explorer, monstrous homebuilt amphibion?

Ok you wanna keep it simple? Dornier 328 - suits em right to go outta business with that thing flying...

Here's a good rule of thumb for aircraft recognition for WWII-era planes:
If a plane is weird, it's British
if a plane is ugly, it's French
if a plane is weird AND ugly, it's Russian.

My vote for the ugliest airplane isn't any of the three, though. The Transavia Airtruk gets my vote. It's an Australian cropduster. See it in action in the movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

De Havelind Caribou (mean looking), Dornier (again) Skyservant, Trislander

I remember pullin up with my ol man to an FBO in Atlanta in a Shorts 360, mid 80's when the plane was new. I overheard the receptionist at the FBO going to her boss over the phone:

"There's a....there's a...I don't know what it is, but it sure looks STRANGE!"
We had a good laugh...

The Japanese (Coast Guard?) have this four engine turboprop seaplane that is pretty darn ugly. Also, it seems to be about the slowest thing in the sky too.

(With apoligies to any Murray/CCAir alum):
The CASA 212.The CASA looks like a SD360 that sat out in the sun too long. The Shorts looks like the box the CASA came in.I reckon the Shorts is a retract so the crew could log complex time-I can imagine the surge in speed when the gear retracts that 8" or so.I've seen helos with more chord than a Shorts. The EMB110 is plenty ugly, too.

Soviet equipment

Some Soviet amphibians aren't the best looking, either. I won't go so far as to say "ugly," though. Just, "different":

In particular, check out the 14M1P on this site. It looks like a retarded, jet-powered He-111. This is an ugly airplane.

One of my all-time favorite aircraft is the TU-95 bomber. Once again, "different":

I fly a Geo Prism. It does not have wings, but, without question, I fly it (just really low to the ground) and take my word for it. This plane is ugly. ;)

How about ugliest GA plane?

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the Beech Sundowner/Sierra/Duchess airframe. Something about the side windows that I don't like. Kind of goofy looking.

Of course, now somehow the Duchesses that I fly are going to know I said this, and I'll be cursed with a string of terrible landings! Women!

GA plane? How bout a Piper Apache!!! Talk bout flyin a potato...

How about the sabreliner. Looks like that plane fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.
