The reasons why the Mormon Church has a huge genealogy base is:

They look up their ancencstors and convert them.

So some day in the future one of your offspring may answer the door to find two nice looking young men in with white shirts and ties, before you know it you too will be a Mormon.

The part about converting ancestors is a little off. Not to turn this into a doctrinal thread, but you would be suprised how many mormon's are hanging out in pilot lounges around the country. We are just not as verbal about ourselves as those who like to bash the religion.

Wow, thanks a ton for all the replies-especially steak...here's to a medical failing filet! And the golf and bars, we'll try some of these and I'll give you the verdicts.

Good point. Check out "Inside Mormonism" by Isaiah Bennett.

And if that book isn't enough for you, check out this wonderful website below that documents the true basis and false doctrine of the Mormon church.

And I'm not going to dog on your religion, but seriously guys, you need to do yourself a small favor and atleast open your minds up and read whats below - and start to ask questions! You have to think for yourselves, and not take everything at face value. Look at both sides, and see what makes sense to you in the end.

I lived in an area predominated by Mormons for 8 years, so I know a bit about the religion. I had some one explain to me what was being done with the conversions once. I remember something about trying to get your ancestors throught the seven levels of heaven or purgatory, I can't remember the exact details.

I agree that my comment about converting ancestors may be a little off, but any semblance of converting ancestors is a "lot off". I would appreciate an explanation or link to what is actually occuring with the geneology information.

I don't live in Utah and most likely never will, in fact the population there is not predominantly LDS, funny huh?

This link explains it better than I could, I didn't mean to sound snippy, but the dialoge was getting a bit out of hand with others. It's not really "converting".

Just clicked that link and read a little. Jeeze, that's some scary $hit, no wonder some of those ppl are nutz.

wrong link, you should know that if you wanted to know about life as a freight dog you shouldn't go into a pilot lounge at signature and talk to the guys in the yellow ties.

Sorry, you must be a mormon. Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers:beer:

Of course you'd want me to visit a site put together by the mormons as opposed to the site I clicked on (obviously put together my a non-mormon) because they tone it down a little and don't make it sound as nutty.

I don't even know where to start. I think it's utterly outrageous that somebody can actually believe they may become a gods after they die. Also even more bizarre that they believe that God came from some other planet. WTF.

Garden variety mormons-- no big deal. If you want a real read on the history of how the religion started and the scary mormon fundamentalist sects. check out "Under the banner of heaven" by john Krakauer. A REAL eye-opener!

In SLC you can't miss the Red Iguana for mexican, best I've ever had.

WOW, I do not know where to start .... Think about religion using today's norms ...

Guy comes off the moutain and tells everyone male to chop off the end of his penis ... throw that crazy guy in in loony bin.

Guy is out wondering the desert for 40 days and says he was out being tempted by Satin ... get that guy an IV and rehydrate. Must be hallusinating <sp>

Group of people say their buddy can turn water into wine and feed a million people with one fish and rises after he dies .... burn down their compound.

If Christ were to come back today as a homeless drug addict telling people to repent the Rev Jerry Fartwell would call him a heratic and laugh in his face.

Let's face it ... it all bizzare if you think about using 21st century logic. That is why people call it faith.

If I'm attempting to learn as much about the Japanese culture as I could, I'm gonna ask someone from Argentina.......some of you guys need to get a life. Look up all of the crazy, false teachings of the Mormon religion if it will make you feel better. Or, just ask a member of the church. It's pretty simple.

CD

Personally, I just love it when people, who obviously have no clue, try and explain to me and others just exactly what it is that I'm supposed to believe. Amazing, simply amazing. I actually find those websites (and others like them) quite comical. If you decide to go down that road, please do your homework - just don't quote the same old stuff that has been discredited long ago.

I went to the SLC Temple once and was picking some of the missionary types brains. Like someone else said, go to the source. The problem was I couldn;t get an answer. What they recited was scripted and purely from rote memory. It was sad that they wouldn't/couldn;t give their own opinion. I pretty get much of the same answer from those who I fly with who are willing to talk about it.

I went to the "other" website and it basically said "when talking to a mormon"...."you cannot believe what they say because they think they believe one thing when the fact is that they believe something totally different, but they don't realize it".
What does that mean? They try to make you think that they are the experts on what I really believe because I'm being fooled.

The plain fact, and the last thing I will say in this discussion is that there has been "anti-mormon" people out there since the begining of the Church, harsh critics that have tried to discredit the foundation upon which it was built. Since the early 1800's when it was orginized people have tried to stop it from growing. I don't think they have done a good job since there are over 12 million members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. No, Salt Lake City isn't predominantly Mormon and there are more church members outside of the U.S. than inside the U.S. today. There is nothing that any website can do or any knuckle Headed Know it all pilot can say to change reality. The false HBO show and the lunatics in southern Utah do not represent anything I believe, in fact I have never lived in Utah and do not plan on moving there so I can be "held in captivity" as some say, by the church leaders. I am free to do as I please and it just so happens that I live my religion which I know to be true. If any of you do not feel like your questions have been answered in good favor, then I'm sorry, maybe someday you will understand to. You can argue points all you want, but you won't put a dent in the direction of the Church.

In the meantime, I hope the guy who started the thread has a good overnight in SLC.

Are you kidding me? Some of us have already achieved that status, just ask us. ;-)

As someone alluded to before, it comes down to faith. If you really want to know about the church, ask UEJ500. I grew up in the church and while I am not an active member, the voiced ignorance of those who know nothing but profess their knowledge of Mormonism really annoys me (I guess this is an open invitation to assail the character of me & my family, an FI tradition). I would be the perfect Mormon if I could forego the occasional “hot drink,” tithe & attend church, but that is not likely to happen, in the near future anyway. For those of you in the know, you can call me “Jack.” Everyone else can refer to me as ***hole or dick****.
