The UN was formed after WWII, which coincidentally (and as Dave Griffin pointed out) was the last time the US declared war. It has since become 'politically incorrect' to unilaterally declare war on another country, hence all the coalitions and UN peacekeeping missions. We were not the only Western nation to fight in Korea, Vietnam, or the Gulf Wars.
