FWIW, if your family could afford the seats in the back of my airplane, you
wouldn't be swinging the gear at ExpressJet? Every time the Geniuses you
hold such high regard for, come up with a "great idea", the costs of those
seats go up; earning you less money per year to swing the gear at your
regional and making it even less likely your family would ever be in the
back of my airplane.

There's a huge fallacy in the "Recipe" theory.

I personally own a badly-soiled, dog-eared copy of the Joy of Cooking. It allows an inexperienced cook like me to make great dishes for family and friends. I could probably even go into business if I were so inclined, have never worked in the food industry (OK, a pizza busboy freshman year of high school).

Does somebody REALLY think if they teach a pilot with little experience the SOP "recipe", he will magically become a SAFE pilot? Perhaps he will be SAFER but he probably will use the recipe as a crutch. I suppose if you arm the pilot with enough "recipes" he will do an adequate job under most, if not all, normal circumstances. But, having never learned the theory of the recipe and an in-depth understanding through experience and study, he will be clueless on how to account for the few times the recipe doesn't work as planned.

When the feces strikes the axial-flow ventilator, do you want a Renslow, or a Sully at the controls?

A logical and understandable comment. Yes, you start with the recipe. With experience you learn more caution. You apply what you have learned (the hard way) and be the Pilot in command. But - you start with the recipe and build on it. One should not throw the baby out with the bath water.
As I'm told - This is not brain surgery. But a Brain Surgeon can kill only one person at a time, Pilots can kill many more.
Err to the safety side. The first goal of the day is - everybody lives.

Wait, is that why we learn systems too? I always wondered why I spend two weeks learning that stuff when all I thought I needed was a printed procedure. :rolleyes:

So, TCAS and EGPWS are simply tools of an overreaching, interfering Government?

Until some of you realize that the FAA (at the Washington, DC level) is a political origanization, you will never understand why things happen or don't happen.

In the meantime, I will continue to work hard to ensure that Darwinism isn't the method we use to screen pilots. In fact, that has to be the dumbest statement I've read on FlightInfo. Congratulations.
