Agreed. I'm not in my fifties yet, but that's why I took all mine out a few years ago. I finally wised up that no matter how young I thought I was, unless I was on a bike and in very specific company ... I'd just look like an idiot. There's a time and place for everything. And even at forty years old there are very few times and places that multiple ear peircings on a guy doesn't look goofy or even sad. I gave it up.

That's also the reason all my tattoos are completely covered when I'm on an airplane. Time and place. No matter how educated, articulate, and competent I may seem in conversation, I'm pretty sure the rich folks footing the bill don't want to see a guy with arms full of ink lugging their bags, cleaning their plane, and sitting up front at the business end of a multi-million dollar aircraft. Seems to me that corporate and charter flying is a customer service business, and perceptions are everything. My stuff stays completely covered. I even keep my 'artwork' hidden from the Captains, even those that I've flown with often, and even at the hotel on an RON. I'd tell them I have tattoos if they ask, but none have done so yet. These are the people who have graciously given me a tremendous learning opportunity and who will help me up thru the ranks if I do my part, and they are usually very conservative. I respect their conservative viewpoint and I respect their opinions on professionalism, and so dress accordingly.

So ... ankle tats on GV, Bombardier Global, or Falcon 900 Flight Attendant? Not appropriate. Not even close.

And if they had them, but kept them covered while on duty, would you think of them or see them any differently? I realize that the pax would view them in a different light...but it certainly wouldn't change your opinion of them as a crew member would it? Like I said in my earlier post, I have one on each ankle but always wore uniform pants or black hose when I was on duty. I would hate to think that one of my pilots thought 'less' of me once they saw them or found out that I had them. Again though, I understand the reasoning behind not letting the pax see the artwork and I totally agree.

I should have qualified that last paragraph, my apologies. When I say "not appropriate", I am speaking from the standpoint of the people footing the bill, or Captains who are openly and clearly conservative, and was not speaking for me personally. I have a LOT of tattoos from my soldiering and bike-riding days. I conform because I will need the word-of-mouth recommendations of Captains and pax when I move to full-time professional flying, because I'm getting to old to fight things like that (I didn't used to be ), and because I'm (finally ) mature enough to see personal appearance politics from someone else's vewpoint.

However, for me personally ... I like inked ladies, and I attach no negative connotations to being inked at all.

Awesome timing for this thread ... Monday I have an opportunity to fly to a costal resort with someone who is a potential mentor and who could be a tremendous learning resource, and whose recommendation when I turn pro would carry a lot of weight. We're there all day long while the pax is on business and he has already mentioned hitting the beach.

I'm going to look pretty stoopid sitting on a beach towel in black slacks, a starched white button-down, and loafers. :nuts:

Why a tattoo? To be an individual....just like everyone else!

Yes...I grew my hair long and wore sideburns to be a "rebel" (mostly because everyone I knew was doing the same thing), but luckily for me I was able to transition out of that phase without permanent vestiges of my "rebellion".

Want some body art? Get a henna "tattoo". Wear it for a few weeks. If you still dig it, get another one. Repeat as necessary. If you get tired of it after a year or so...thank me.

Albie - exactly what I was thinking...the tattoo on the lower back is the bullseye. A buddy of mine used to call it the trifecta...lower back tattoo, toe ring, and belly button pierced = ready to rock. Her callsign might as well be Jenna Jameson. I've seen my fair share of those in Panama Sh1tty...both at La Vila (unfortunately usually she's about 18 [maybe] or on Mexico Beach [which usually means she's the single cougar in her mid-40's with the 3 ankle biters waiting back home in the double wide]).

I think as long as they dont show...who cares. I am tattoo'd on most of my back, upper arm and both shoulders. Of course....it was back in my football days but if you saw me now you would never know that I even have one. Most people are extreemly suprised when they find out that I do have one. Its more about your personality and being able to hide them..I think the same thing applys to F/As, if you cant see them, who cares. If they do have one, it does not mean anything about them (when you call them a tramp).
