Whats the big deal here anyways? If you want to get ink then go and do as you please. If you are inclined to apply for a professional position where visible ink is frowned upon, then take that into account. Simple as that!

I fly with many pilots and flight attendants that are inked and rarely is it even a problem as the ink is concealed with uniform parts. It is our preconcieved notions that "ink is evil" that is wrong. the freedom to decorate our bodies should be recognized and not scorned. It is a personal choice and freedom.

Here's a little story... A couple weeks back I was starting a 4 day trip. As usual day one is grueling. Starting with a 4 am alarm, commute across the country, check in at noon, and fly 5 legs (7+ hours) and at the hotel by midnight. My crew this trip was awesome and we all clicked and got along really well and had a very good day one. No socializing that night as we were all beat... I was looking forward to the next 3 days.

the next morning I had breakfast and went to the pool to relax before show time. Out there I found one of my crew members relaxing as well. when they rolled over I then saw the HUGE TATTOO across their entire upper back! It made for a good discussion that morning.

I guess that the moral of the story is that ANYONE could have a HUGE TATTOO that you cant even see while on duty. In this individual's case, they were the utmost professional on and off the job. Their personality and disposition were not altered one bit by the fact that they had ink.

Rant over!!!

I'm old school...ink is for ex-cons...there is no such thing as "tasteful"

I see ink and I think scumbag...

You just called a LOT of veterans, soldiers, firefighters, and policemen scumbags.

In Japan, there is a style of tattoo that is completely 100% full body EXCEPT the face. Usually there is a Samurai theme, with a lot of historic references to clans and past times. These guys put on a suit and tie, and you see nothing.

Part of the show involved one guy who wanted to do his face. He went ahead and did so, knowing he'd be fired for it. His daily routine calls for a pound of pancake makeup applied all over his face to hide the tattoo. So far his boss doesn't know. Can you imagine what he looks like with that makeup, heavy enough to cover full facial tattooing?

My resistance and repugnance of tattooing is weakening with exposure. Remember 25 years ago, when a single pierced ear in a guy was freaky and meant he was gay? Now it's utterly commonplace.

I would have to so to the visible tattoos. All the flight crew should present themselves as professionals. You don't see your CEO or any other high profile company person showing tattoos. Having said all that I have two tattoos and they stay covered up while flying as well.

you know MEN get tatoo's too! in the service! women are not tramps because of tatoos! I don't have one, I don't even have my ears pierced for earings. Some of us are good people, by boyfriend is a Harley Hog, does that make him wrong?

some people are " Born to be Wild" Smart people enjoy wild times, don't worry about tatoo's if I have to find it on the internet I will. But most Miliatary guys/gals have a tatoo, it is matter of reflection, the name of your man or girl!

Dont worry about it.

This is not directed at MissKittyKat.

"Good People"?

You can't be "good people" with a tatoo? I have one. It's on my ankle.

You must be either Old, Religious, or Anal to talk down to people with TATS!

In fact, you may just be a dorky pilot.

You guy's are the reason this industry went from Pilots being regarded as "cool", to pilots wearing pants hiked up, reebok sneakers, long-sleeved shirts, khaki pants and white sneakers on over-nights, '50's haircuts, braided belts, stone-washed jeans, and having no GAME.

I'm the exact opposite of all of you dorks, and the fact is, you embarrass me!!

Uhh, no, it's not "us" dorky types that wear a clean uniform, pressed shirt, good haircut, and shined shoes that's taking us down... it's the backpacks, ipods, weird baggage, black running shoes, and other accoutrements of so many RJ types you see strolling through the airport.

As for layover clothing, who gives a rat's a$$. If you're in layover clothes, unless you spout foolishly at the bar, which is a noob/dork trait in and of itself, no one should know you're a pilot anyhow.

I wear a clean uniform, always pressed, but if you find that you resemble the above remark, I'm sorry.

truely sorry.

Penny Lane has a shop for you. Beneath the blue suburban skies.:erm:

Actually my layover gear consists of a swimsuit, flip-flops, and usually some loud caribbean shirt, because that's where I am. Often a locally bought Cuban is at hand. We avoid meat markets and generally kick back on the beach.

Let me get this straight... those of us in our 40's and '50's REALLY need to get with the program. Coupla tats, maybe some piercings, and some cool new clothes. Next, we hit the bars and clubs, loudly making sure everyone knows we're pilots. That way, our 'profession' won't have a dork image. Nice.

Do you think, maybe, that our professional image is based upon what we look like, and how we perform, on duty? What a concept. Do you walk around the airport with an ipod set dangling from your cranium, and a faraway look in your eyes, avoiding interaction with other people? THAT is what makes us look bad. Fess up... you wear an ipod at work.

How weird are some of these chicks with a tramp stamp going to look when they are 70 or so, sitting in a nursing home???

Whats worse is when they get one on the front pelvis, and then get pregnat. The distortion/stretching of the skin is not kind to this type of tramp stamp.

You don't know what the hell you're talking about.

wow...that's pretty harsh. my rule of thumb when i got mine was not to get anything that i would be embarrassed to have when i got older. the two that i have are relatively small (2") and both have special meaning. one of them is a heart with wings that i got in memory of my late husband. not all tattooes are tramp stamps. some women that get them may be tramps, but don't lump us all together just because of a tattoo.

Something about a tattooed old granny in her little floral dress just doesn't seem right.

And 20 years from now, 50 year old women with tattoos will look just as dumb as guys with earrings do today.....

Thank you.....nothing weirder than some 50-60 year old guy with an earring.

Geez, give it up pal, your college days are OVER......

Our jobs dictate a conservative responsible appearance because every person on that airplane trusts us with their lives FA's included. Me personally would find it harder to trust a person that has tattoos and piercings everywhere. My policy would be keep them hidden while in uniform. Ive got 2 tattoos and just decided to get them where they couldnt be seen, oh and the white haired gramps with an anchor tat on his forearm doesnt seem weird. Chances are when these chicks are old and wrinkled the tattoo on their back wont seem weird either....considering most of yall will be gone and 60% of the senior woman population will have one.

Agreed. I'm not in my fifties yet, but that's why I took all mine out a few years ago. I finally wised up that no matter how young I thought I was, unless I was on a bike and in very specific company ... I'd just look like an idiot. There's a time and place for everything. And even at forty years old there are very few times and places that multiple ear peircings on a guy doesn't look goofy or even sad. I gave it up.

That's also the reason all my tattoos are completely covered when I'm on an airplane. Time and place. No matter how educated, articulate, and competent I may seem in conversation, I'm pretty sure the rich folks footing the bill don't want to see a guy with arms full of ink lugging their bags, cleaning their plane, and sitting up front at the business end of a multi-million dollar aircraft. Seems to me that corporate and charter flying is a customer service business, and perceptions are everything. My stuff stays completely covered. I even keep my 'artwork' hidden from the Captains, even those that I've flown with often, and even at the hotel on an RON. I'd tell them I have tattoos if they ask, but none have done so yet. These are the people who have graciously given me a tremendous learning opportunity and who will help me up thru the ranks if I do my part, and they are usually very conservative. I respect their conservative viewpoint and I respect their opinions on professionalism, and so dress accordingly.

So ... ankle tats on GV, Bombardier Global, or Falcon 900 Flight Attendant? Not appropriate. Not even close.

And if they had them, but kept them covered while on duty, would you think of them or see them any differently? I realize that the pax would view them in a different light...but it certainly wouldn't change your opinion of them as a crew member would it? Like I said in my earlier post, I have one on each ankle but always wore uniform pants or black hose when I was on duty. I would hate to think that one of my pilots thought 'less' of me once they saw them or found out that I had them. Again though, I understand the reasoning behind not letting the pax see the artwork and I totally agree.

I should have qualified that last paragraph, my apologies. When I say "not appropriate", I am speaking from the standpoint of the people footing the bill, or Captains who are openly and clearly conservative, and was not speaking for me personally. I have a LOT of tattoos from my soldiering and bike-riding days. I conform because I will need the word-of-mouth recommendations of Captains and pax when I move to full-time professional flying, because I'm getting to old to fight things like that (I didn't used to be :( ), and because I'm (finally :D ) mature enough to see personal appearance politics from someone else's vewpoint.

However, for me personally ... I like inked ladies, and I attach no negative connotations to being inked at all. :)

Awesome timing for this thread ... Monday I have an opportunity to fly to a costal resort with someone who is a potential mentor and who could be a tremendous learning resource, and whose recommendation when I turn pro would carry a lot of weight. We're there all day long while the pax is on business and he has already mentioned hitting the beach.

I'm going to look pretty stoopid sitting on a beach towel in black slacks, a starched white button-down, and loafers.

Why a tattoo? To be an individual....just like everyone else!

A permanent sign of temporary insanity.

Yes...I grew my hair long and wore sideburns to be a "rebel" (mostly because everyone I knew was doing the same thing), but luckily for me I was able to transition out of that phase without permanent vestiges of my "rebellion".

Want some body art? Get a henna "tattoo". Wear it for a few weeks. If you still dig it, get another one. Repeat as necessary. If you get tired of it after a year or so...thank me.

Buddy of mine once told me those lower back tattoos actually all say the same thing....

"...put D1ck here...."

Albie - exactly what I was thinking...the tattoo on the lower back is the bullseye. A buddy of mine used to call it the trifecta...lower back tattoo, toe ring, and belly button pierced = ready to rock. Her callsign might as well be Jenna Jameson. I've seen my fair share of those in Panama Sh1tty...both at La Vila (unfortunately usually she's about 18 [maybe] or on Mexico Beach [which usually means she's the single cougar in her mid-40's with the 3 ankle biters waiting back home in the double wide]).

HaHa! Thats no S*%&!

I love women!!

I think as long as they dont show...who cares. I am tattoo'd on most of my back, upper arm and both shoulders. Of course....it was back in my football days but if you saw me now you would never know that I even have one. Most people are extreemly suprised when they find out that I do have one. Its more about your personality and being able to hide them..I think the same thing applys to F/As, if you cant see them, who cares. If they do have one, it does not mean anything about them (when you call them a tramp).

Snakum, my marmotty friend - how went the dreaded beach and tatoo exposure layover? Was your mentor shocked? :)
