SWA Pool IV Thread

How do they make the calls, is it by the date you interview or by your last name, or is there no rime or reason? Hope to get a call soon!

My friend was down at the training center giving checkrides. He said that any 2009 classes was "extrememly optimistic" and that 2010 my not even "pan out."

Maybe he didn't have the type when he interviewed and didn't get placed into the pool right away. Not everybody who interviewed and got hired in July was thrown into the pool right away.

OK now I'm really confused. In your original post you said your friend got hired over a year ago. Now you say he interviewed in July. Which one is it?

Got a call from Sandy (SWA PD) just checking contact info for poolie status. One question asked was when? No real time to work with, but they should call you 3-4 weeks prior to class start. She said to call back in Jan and they would have an idea of how many classes it would take to get out of the pool. It is news, not great news. I am planning to keep my day job for now. Switching from backstroke to freestyle.

More like dangling with a life preserver. My buddy who is at the top of the pool was just told not to expect anything until next fall at the earliest.

More like dangling with a life preserver. My buddy who is at the top of the pool was just told not to expect anything until next fall at the earliest.

I think it's been discussed already, but...LL sent an email out to the poolies about 2 months ago saying "Sep 09". Fall 09 isn't "dangling with a life perserver." Your friend has a place in line with a good company and I'm sure he's planned ahead. But the thread is now chummed for the Tanker Clown...

Check some of A$$ Clowns posts over the last couple of years and you'll see how full of Sh!t he is! What he says may turn out to be true, but not because he or his "sources" know exactly what's going to happen. You guys in the pool keep your heads up and stay flexible because it could happen sooner than you think. All you have to do is look at what was going on at the end of 07 (doom & gloom) and compare that to what actually happened in 08 (350+ out of the pool). Best of luck to all and remember to keep the glass half full!

For you AF guys, the UAV units are hiring. They say training is 3 months, then they want at least a year pay back on active duty for the orders. Might be a way to fill some of the time until SWA hires again. After that commitment is up, you could string them a long a couple of months at a time until you can get into class.

You guys can use me as an example. I fully expected to be in class Feb. '09 and expected the worst.

Got a call in June '08 asking if I could be in class in two weeks.

Don't underestimate how fast things can move around here. Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

I just read that overall seat capacity for Southwest will deline 4-5% overall from last year. The CEO also said that the fleet size will not increase.

Looks like at 11 pilots per jet, you need the fleet to grow by 2 jets before you start a class.

If you guys want, PM me and I can put you in touch with the UAV guy at Creech (Vegas). Training last 3 months or so and then he wants a year pay back on full time orders. That could pay the mortgage until training starts again. Seriously, I'm not trying to get you guys spun up...but there's an opportunity to keep the incoming coming in until training can start again.

Last year GM, Ford, and Chryster weren't on the edge of liquidating. Last year, your jets weren't half full on the day before Thanksgiving. Last year the stock market was almost twice what it is today. Last year we didn't love over a half a million jobs a month.

Feel free to ignore the obvious. I'm just pointing out to some folks in the pool a way to keep the bills paid for a while prior starting at SW. The reality for a poolie is that this time next year they will probably still be a few months out from starting.
