I was at the US Airways ALPA office today talking to the guy who mans the Hotline telephone. He said that the other person who works the Hotline got a telephone call from SWA not too long ago asking her if she is still interested in interviewing with SWA. Interviewing will begin in March and she will be one of the first ones to be called. Both are furloughed US Airways pilots.

WOW, great development

Great news if it is true but I have serious doubts about what you are saying.
It is a little hard to believe that SWA would start lining up interviews 3 months before the interview is supposed to occur. Also, this is without going first to the new online application system. I would understand it if the person is someone that was offered the interview before interviews ceased and now they are giving her the heads up that they are going to honor the previous offer. Other than that scenario, I find it doubtful that it is true. Anyone? I hope it is however, because it seems things are going to start moving again...

If she were a scholarship recipient, it might be true. I believe scholarship recipients are guaranteed an interview after successful completion of the type.

The key word is "she"

Scholarship means employment

Winning the scholarship means getting on the pool at SWA. The process is the same as being interviewed for employment. In fact, since May there are three folks I know who have gotten on the pool by winning scholarships.

CRJdriver, while some people are sensitive to people being hired without qualifications, the 1000 PIC turbine minimum still applies at SWA. As a pilot that is pretty respectable no matter what. It is really easy to point at people and assume that they got there the easy way while you have worked so HARD! Did you? What if I look at your profile and assume that your daddy worked for United (while they were at the top) and paid for everything and fed spoon you your career down your throat? I am sure that didn't happen but I am just making a point. You don't know what people have or have not done to get where they are or who deserves what.
If you know that woman then great!, you are entitled to your opinion. Your attitude is quite prejudicial if you ask me...

The "I'm sure your daddy paid for everything" argument is stupid.

I guess you think military guys are jerks, too, because all of our daddies (taxpayers) paid for their training.

How someone is able to afford pilot training is completely irrelevent.

What is relevent is qualification.

Putting pressure on an airline fill quotas is not only idiotic, but it's dangerous.

Scholarships

There are two "scholarships" that are offered with the help of Southwest Airlines which result in a 737 type being awarded. FYI, other airlines offer similar programs for these organizations. More info is available at their websites.

The Organization of Black Airline Pilots (OBAP) provides an annual scholarship for members who apply for the scholarship. I'm not the authority on it but my understanding is that applications are received and interviews are conducted by SWA & recommendations are sent to the OBAP folks for their final decision making. The winner is awarded a free 737 type and in turn is allowed to interview at SWA. I'm not aware of any "guarantees" for job employment with SWA.

Women in Aviation, does a similar type of awarding a scholarship to one of their members. The winner is announced at the annual meeting like it is with OBAP.

Here is the information from their website describing it:

WIA Website Describing various Scholarships

Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Type Ratings

Recency of experience is considered. Only pilot time in fixed wing aircraft will be considered (please exclude simulator, helicopter, WSO, RIO, FE, NAV, EWO, “Other”, etc.). Applicants need a Current FAA Class I Medical Certificate and must pass FAA mandated drug test.

A high school diploma or equivalency is required. Graduation from an accredited, four-year college is preferred. Applicants must have established authorization to work in the United States. They must read, write, and speak English fluently. WAI membership will be verified.Scholarship winners must be available for potential employment by Southwest Airlines within one year of successful completion of the B-737 type rating class and additional review board.

To obtain an application, you may send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Southwest Airlines, Attn: B737, Scholarship, People Department HDQ/4HR, 2702 Love Field Drive, Dallas, TX 75235. All scholarship applications must be received on or before December 10, 2003.

Each of these scholarships are one of many scholarships offered to these organizations members from many different aviation groups and not all of them are pilot related. Please save your editorial comments on whether these types of scholarships are fair or not to any particularly group. The scholarships are out there for their members. If you would like to become eligible, become a member, there are no restrictions to the best of my knowledge but even if they are I'm simply trying to answer a simple question.

cheers & happy holidays!

Willing to bet that it was she who called the PD rather than vice versa. They probably told her Marchish. That jives with what ive heard and read.

You might be are right about that. She did have two numbers to the PD department, but I thought she is the one who got the call? Either way the writing is one the wall, interviewing will begin once again and it's only a few months away!

Not my point

Fly-n-high,

My point is that discrimination is wrong. Discrimination is not just against women or minorities. It is everywhere including this board. Some people in the 135 world discriminate against military pilots (without even knowing them). Other 135 operators don't want 121 drivers. Some 121 carriers have a bad image or opinion of 135 pilots. Some people think women can't fly. Others think black pilots got to be were they are by getting underderved chances. The point is people get judged before even showing up. The comment that CRJdriver was not right IMHO. "Yeah, she got the call because she is a woman and there is no woman out there more qualified than me". That could be true but how does he know? . That is just my opinion. Has nothing to do with PC. It is just plain human dignity.
