SWA ... Get the 737 Type

Yes, you still need the 737 type to get hired at SWA and you can still interview without it. But, the SWA recruiter/interviewer (Lindsey Lange) said they are focused on pilots with the 737 Type because they need pilots now. So, reading between the lines... They are not going to waste valuable time interviewing non-typed pilots until they have to. They want to put you in a class as soon as possible. She also said as of this month their pool will be dry.

Type or no type interviewees

To clarify, folks who have the type are getting the call for an interview as well as those folks who don't have the type. What is the percentage? Only the PD knows precisely but the reality is SWA need persons to fill aircraft. The quickest way for this to occur is to have folks who have their types since getting a type & a type class can slow the applicant from being available for class down by several weeks to several months.

Not all applicants are eligible for immediate employment either but it makes sense that SWA is incline to reach more frequently into the pool of typed applicants vs. non-typed applicants. If SWA is where you wish to be eventually I'd recommend acquiring the type for not just that reason but with other carriers who fly 737 also hiring having one isn't a bad thing to have on your resume.

This disussion could go on & on but for those without types who have all the mins met for SWA, don't hesitate to apply & don't be surprised if you get the call. Only 3-5% of the pool is being called each month so the waiting is tough but hang in there.

Sorry to ask what might be a question with an obvious-to-some answer, but...

Is this "we need typed pilots NOW" thing from LL something relatively new? I know of at LEAST one typed applicant that's still waiting patiently for the call to interview.

I can't argue with Lindsey but I find it interesting that the 737 type rating schools keep getting students who have been recently hired and are now needing a type rating...
It's a mix of things that gets you an interview: PIC turbine, career progression, positions of leadership, buddies/family in Dallas, type rating. Keep building time, get your paperwork ready, enjoy your current job, and be patiient. Every worthy pilot will get a chance.
