Greetings all --

I've received a call for a 9 March class. I'll be returning from 2 years of military leave, for which I was called involuntarily during my first week at Southwest, after starting 17 Feb 03.

So as Chase said, I have already had one "last first day on the job" at SWA and now I'll have the privilege of another one :-) Believe me, it's a day (days for me) you'll never forget.

I interviewed in the spring of 2001. Yes, 2001. After my time in the pool (15 months) and my time on paid vacation with the DoD, I think I'm going to set some kind of record for the longest new hire at SWA. And I'm totally fired up about it! I truly wish the best of luck for all you guys who are hopeful, waiting on interviews or classes, or just trying to frame your career plans towards SWA. As I used to write to my former "poolies," keep the faith.

Cheers!
Paul

Paul,
Congrats on going back to SWA. It's good to have been able to start at SWA, have that seniority... and be on 3rd year pay, isn't it? Thanks for your service to your country. Good luck and fly safe.

Gremlin,

Nice car!

It will be great to go back with my seniority intact. I didn't expect that, but SWA is one of the few airlines that has made the choice to honor seniority after day one, which to me is another example of the kind of demonstrable support they give their people (and tangentially, the country, since such a policy makes it easier for a guardsman or reservist to continue to serve while working for SWA). I am very lucky and thankful for how it all worked out....the squadron nextdoor to mine was activated the Friday before my SWA start date and I could have just as easily been there and missed my start date.

My wife and family live over 2,000 miles from my reserve unit, so I would have gladly skipped this past 2 years to stay at Southwest, but I earned my skills in the AF and I felt happy to respond to the call to active duty and contribute what I could. It has been a privilege to serve in any case.

Thanks for the good wishes! Good luck to you as well.

Cheers,
HP

That is great that they honored your seniority...most airlines wouldn't have done that. For what you just did for your Country, putting yourself in harms way while putting your own life on hold, You deserve to keep that seniority! Thanks and Congrats!

First of all HPaul3: Let me add my thanks to you for your service to our country. Good on you and God Bless our troops.

Also let it be said that I luv SW and have never said anything bad about them.

However, ANY airline that you get a seniority number with by LAW has to allow you go to your reserve duty, and I don't know of any that wouldn't allow you to hold your seniority number. Yes, that is a great and honorable thing, but every airline does that.

Good luck to everyone interviewing and starting classes at SW!

Hello Falcon, thanks for your note.

The key here, of course, is the seniority number. And while I agree 100% that once you have a seniority number (or any other job for which you're fully qualified in any industry) you are protected by federal law during and following a call-up.

I don't agree with you that "every airline does that," i.e. issues a seniority number on day one. Many, if not most, require you to complete your training and possibly even your IOE prior to receiving your seniority number. That's the difference I was trying to point out. Others can add hard data....I'm just recalling my experience.

Cheers!

Here is the latest from Flt Ops:

Flight Operations continues to analyze our Pilot manning needs for the remainder of the year. We had a New Hire Pilot class of 20 start this past Wednesday the 16th and there are two firm classes planned for March 9th and April 6th with 16 and 24 Pilots respectively.

If SWA had shortened its pilot requirements to 462 pilots for the year, then can anyone answer the following.

1. How many pilots have already started class or has already been awarded a class for this year...

2. How many more pilots have passed the Decision Board and still await a class date...

3. When does the next Decision board meet...

Thanks

I remember that they had 4 classes of 20 in Jan, 3 classes of 20 in Feb. thats 140 pilots in class. I think someone posted on here that there are currently 200 people in the pool, But I don't know if people that are Jan and Feb classes count for people hired this year. If they don't count then this year hiring totals started yestarday, when the first decision board met.

2 classes in Febuary. 9th and the 16th. Total hired so far this year 120.

Last firm info is 1 class of 16 in March (class 7 for the year) and 1 class of 24 in April. That would put the total hired by April at 160 for the year. I heard 428 is the goal for the year. All could and very well might change (upward, not downward because 400+ is based on a known number of new 737 arriving this year.)

HP, AirTran issues the seniority number on day one or two (can't remember exactly which).

That's great Llowwelll. I think it's really a sacrifice for a company to do that when they don't have to...more trouble to keep someone on the books while they're out, and I'm glad to see that level of support.

Good day!

What companies don't do this? The law is pretty specific on reserve issues.
