Has SWA officially announced what they are going to do with the B717's
that are coming from Airtran?

Just wondering.....

Dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-hou-dal-lbb.

And that's in one day by a single crew!

As of now they will be kept and configured to 122 seats with a base in ATL and probably either DAL or OAK.

It would cost Southwest millions to return the airplanes and a loss of good will with Boeing.

No formal or informal announcement, only speculation.

With 86 717 and 25 -500s, both seating 122, SWA now has 100 smaller aircraft to deploy to different regions of the country that can fly optimized city pairings that make more sense for 717/-500 aircraft.

Obvious city pairings in TX from HOU and DAL.

From MDW, you have IND, CMH, DAY, OMA and more

From OAK you have RNO, PDX, ONT, LAX, BUR

From BWI you have MHT, PVD, ORF, RDU, BDL, SDF, RIC

ATL has the majority of those city pairings now and whether we keep all of those cities will be interesting to see but expect to add CHS and GSP to that list also.

MCO and PHX has some natural combinations also. Would expect some cities to not see too many if any of the smaller aircraft but the nice thing is there are now options available to optimize the schedule for different aircraft size.

Wrong. Plane change in lbb to the heavy (737). Fly lbb-abq-las-bur-smf-pdx-sea-rno-boi-oma-mdw-dtw-buf-isp-bwi-orf-jax-rsw-mco-tpa-ecp-bmh-msy-hou-crp-hrl-hou.....swap back into a 717....hou-dal-hou-dal.

It was a turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you sure about that? I thought you had to overnight in LBB. There is no way this day ends in DAL!

Betcha a steak dinner a fair number will be California shuttle......... after the fence comes down that is.

Gup

You might see them in Denver but I have three steak dinners that say you will not see them in California.

I was told at the round up that at date of signing, SWA will announce they are getting roughly 30 more 717's that are now parked in Mexico and elsewhere. This came from 3 different SWAPA dudes.

I'll take that bet. . . . . . And I doubt they'll be very useful out of Denver in the summer, unless they have the higher-rated engines or aren't going far.

I could see Witchita and Des Moines flight on 717 to Denver and Chicago.

As far as California, there are very rarely any 500's flying there, maybe a couple a day. The combined number of flights is way over 400 a day, probably closer to 500, so how many 717's would be there. When the rolling swaps start it won't do any good when the next arrival is a 717.

I could be wrong and would be the first to admit it but they are much more likely to stay between MCO, ATL, BWI, and MDW, in my opinion.

I'm guessing ATL, MDW, and DAL bases. It could cover pretty much all the short haul in the country from those 3 bases...

Doesn't anyone else understand what a "white elephant" the 717 is? It's a terrific airrplane but to keep it would be a drastic departure from the tried and true tenet of the SWA basic business model? It must cost Boeing a fortune to support since there is very little in common with the DC-9, especially in LRUs. I can't see how Boeing would view it as anything but a giant headache.

It may be a "white elephant" to Boeing, but it won't be a "white elephant" to SWA. Boeing will be forced to continue very favorable lease terms as a way to keep the aircraft from being parked in the desert.

I don't think Boeing has anything to do with the lease, it's all GE. GE may coerce Boeing into updating or maintaining supply stocks for those rare parts, but it's all GE.
