The following is a chart of average one way fares from Charlotte to selected Southwest cities (PIT as of May ’05). What is interesting is to see is the prices for avg 1 way fares to these cities and estimating what those same fares “might” be if Southwest was to go into those cities. The most expensive city pairings (IAD isn't a SWA city) are also worth noting (in red). With SWA’s point to point type of flying the connecting passengers to cities such as MCI, BNA to other destinations out west that currently don’t have sufficient loads to justify non-stops from CLT show the strength of having a system like SWA…you grow passengers in your system through single city connects until you can build up sufficient customer base to warrant non-stop traffic. Eventually the non-stop flights would be added. Thought the information would be interesting with the talk about CLT possibly being within the scope of what Southwest looks for when it comes to going into a city, (1) potential to get a lot of gates & (2) little exposure to LCC competition.

I would never doubt Chase but BWI, PIT, PHL then maybe CLT. Sounds just like US Air and they are very much in trouble. I would hate to see SWA make the same mistakes US Air has by having to many close hubs on the East Coast.

I am obviously missing something but as a wanna be I hope they don't furlough pilots in the future because of expansion to quickly.

I think our management has already thought of that.

Besides we don't have hubs with a spoke system, we have bases with point to point service.

And like Chase mentioned in another post, I believe, SWA keeps growth between 7-15% historically. It's not like we are growing beyond our means. Growth this year might reach 10%.

Interesting. ATA pulled out of KPIT and KCLT because our new managment, John Denison, said they were money losers.

Hal, JD told me point blank when I asked him, Graber, Yakola, and Viets why we pulled out of CLT and JD said that decision was not made by him, it was made before he got there. Take that for what it is worth though.

Perhaps ATA losing money on those routes and the routes themselves being money losers are different things. Like JG & JD said themselves, it's hard to be a presence without real frequency. And ATA hasn't been a presence even where we've had frequency. Also, when the other gentleman at the road show (new name, hadn't heard of him) was asked about CLT, didn't he kind of hem and haw about it was 'probably' because it was a money loser but he didn't really remember? Kinda backs up Pickle's post.

Yea......Yea.....Yea.......

Who gives a $%^* what the fare is from A to B.

SWA "invaded" USAir territory years ago, & has had them in their sights ever since.

First it was BWI......

Then PHL......

Now PIT & CLT.........

They want to conquer the East Coast, & have had a plan to do it. They are just waiting for USAir to fade away.
