I understand that in Europe (UK, anyway) they have DME facilities that are not connected to VOR's or LOC's. (Wolverhampton is one)

I don't think we have any such animal in the USA, but I could be wrong. Anybody know of a stand alone DME in the States?
 
How about the TACAN DME at KTOL that civilian pilots can tune in on 112.5 but can't receive the TACAN nav data.

Hmmm, I didn't know about that one. Do you know the rational behind that?

But it's still not really a stand-alone DME it is attached to a TACAN.

I had never heard of a NDB/DME, either....

Yeah, NDB/DMEs are weird. I've seen plenty of NDB/DME approaches, though the DME generally comes from a local VOR. I don't think I've ever seen a standalone NDB/DME itself, but I know they exist.
