Oil spill ads: 4 tasteless spots
The Gulf oil spill doesn't exactly scream 'marketing opportunity,' but that didn't stop these four companies from rolling out ad campaigns tied to the tragedy.

Scantily-clad women are common in ads of all kinds. But one airline's Web spot came off particularly greasy, considering the scope of the oil disaster in the Gulf.

"Check out the oil on our beaches," suggests the Spirit Air ad, which features suntan-oil-slicked women in bikinis. It's hawking a coupon for $50 off tickets to beach destinations.

A few news organizations posted articles about the ad, calling it "ill-conceived" and saying the spot "mocked" the spill. Spirit Air said its ad was "misunderstood."

"We are merely addressing the false perception that we have oil on our beaches," Spirit said in a statement. "We are encouraging customers to support Florida and our other beach destinations."

Kind of wish they would have struck that place out of business. There mang is full of scum.

I'm sure the local hotels and restaurants will be upset by the customers Spirit is trying to lure to their cities.

Apparently their pilots and flight attendants aren't the only ones that dont understand this management group. Now the rest of the world has been given a chance to see their foolish style of doing business.

My hats off to my NK brothers and sisters....you have your work cut out for you over and over again.

classy management, Harvard or Yale rich kid MBA 101

At Spirit? Ivy League MBAs won't even go to WN. You're looking at Florida State, Alabama, or Auburn MBAs down there.

They will be when Spirit's usual clientele of ultra low-class carrier $9 fare customers skips out on paying their bill.

Everything about Spirit management wreaks. It's a shame that the employees have to put up with such pathetic clowns.

Not that bad...
not exactly sticking up for Spirit's mgmt- but i think too many people are getting their feelers too sensitive...
oiled up bikini clad women are always fantastic

They want to be like Ryanair too much. It's obvious that they're just trying to stir up free publicity. As much as I love scantily clad women, it's just stupid to think an ad campaign like this would work.

As a born a raised Floridian I like the add. The economy here is in the dumps, we need to remind people it is still safe to come down and enjoy the water. South Beach is still great, come down and spend some cash.

The point is - If you want to promote Florida beaches, then it can be done in a more tasteful and appropriate way. Both of these words are not in Spirit's vocabulary.

... and spirit got exactly what it wanted.... FREE advertising! They post a free add on their own web site and it is plastered all over CNN. Truly PRICELESS.

So every beer commercial with hot chicks in mini skirts or bikinis is inappropriate? no more Corona for you sir!

Let's see, NK made more money than Jetblue did last year... I'd say they've done something right. Maybe it was on the backs of their employees, but with a fleet a third of our size, I'd say they did quite well considering last year's economy. AND, certainly, this ad campaign will be better than the Happy Jetting will ever be... They've already earned some free advertising on the news organizations... I think that's genious when a company is looking for the most bang for their buck. I particularly like the green and yellow (BP) colored sun lotion bottle...

My company would have gay dudes and grannies in their ads. I'll take "dirty hot chicks" ANY day.

Gup

Where was the indignation over the "MILF" fares and the "MUFF DIVER" fares? And the "We're no Virgins; we've Always been Cheap and Easy" ads of their past?

Look at some of the pics/avatars associated with various posters and tell me where we have the right to call them out on the "Profession" then.

exactly like Airtrans condescending ads.

Don't know about you all but I liked the days before places like spirit and aitran even existed. You could make 300k, have many more days off, could actually commute to work, majors actually did domestic flying, and we weren't furloughed every 5 years.

Now we all agree this industry sucks right now...with the only consolidation of being able to fly to FLL or MCO for $49 each way. Yay.

"maybee" on the backs of their employees? YGTBFKM. Put down the jetblue kookaid.

The hot chicks are not what is being called into question sir! The fact that Spirit is is taking a flippant attitude towards the WORST ENVIORNMENTAL DISASTER in the history of the U.S. is.

They use a green & yellow bottle (BP's colors) with the letters "B" & "P" highlighted. Think that's just a coincidence? Then maybe you should come down here and see these ruined beaches, dieing marshes, and dead animals for yourself. Better yet, go take a swim in this toxic mess that you seem to find so funny.

You sound like a woman. I'm pissed and nothing you can say or do will make me feel better!

Yep, it's a bad deal. You gonna piss and moan about it or are you going to get up tomorrow with a dang smile on your face and do something about it?

Gup

Typical response from someone who isn't here. If this was in your own backyard, I'm sure you'd be saying different.
