More bases decreases hotel costs. That is why RyanAir and Easyjet have lots of bases and mostly day trips.
 
High oil prices are forcing them to find every way to keep the company out of the red. It has also forced them to change/modifiy the route network which has an impact on pilot bases.

Also keep in mind, for competitive reasons with other airlines, they can't always disclose business strategies with the pilots.
