I hear some of it has to do with the crews being extremely unhappy about the DTW closure. Two months notice and a really tough commute for some 200 pilots. Northwest isn't a good option since their pilots are trying to regularly hop on Spirit. Spirits' 3 daily flights are usually booked and JS is 'first list/first served'. Does anyone know if the company will give their employees JS priority like Midwest did when they dumped their domiciles?

That is currently in the works but no official word. It will be a temporary band-aid though I fear.

The other shoe has not dropped yet - there is always 2. With our growth plans and the physical capacity of FLL in general, there has to be a new base in the works. Even with an expansion of Terminals 3 and 4 and Customs the airport will not function with Menzie's (Contracted ground support/OPS) Haitian Sensations running around the ramp. We have to leave the country to get good ground services.

All part of the games we play when we are in contract negotiations. It is a huge gut check and litmus test for overall Union unity during these times. Either the company is doing the divide and conquer tactic or has more info for us soon. We will see.........

Not the best option, but Compass is hiring for a DTW base. Perhaps people could get DE captain slots if they have the hours. E175 is a nice airplane but still not the best option.

Geez, lowecur, for somebody who seems to pay such close attention to the industry you sure blew it this time. Like Crash said, Spirit's weekend cancellations had nothing to do with anything at NW.

And since you're not a pilot I'll help you understand something. Except for the short time we're with our Aviation Medical Examiner once or twice a year we must self-certify that we're fit for flight. Physical ailment is obvious but sometimes personal problems can be so distracting that it's not in the public interest to have us flying. Things like death/injury/sickness of loved ones, acute financial problems, divorce/custody battles, being overworked, and suddenly being forced to commute to Florida can cause short-term mental stress. A lot of Spirit pilots will be quitting rather than subjecting themselves to the commute. If you own stock in Spirit might want to keep this in mind -- and you're welcome for the tip.

Very knowledgeable BUT, I think SPIRIT is a private company that has NO STOCK.

2 months notice? That's insane. I've "attempted" to j/s between DTW and south florida several times. It's impossible, especially in the summer when nwa runs dc-9's that are always weight restricted.

Monkey see, monkey do. Easy success at NWA has other pilot groups salivating. Just the beginning of job actions in an industry ripe to shoot itself in the foot again.

There is no organized sickout being conducted by SPA ALPA. The cancellations happen because Spirit has been running on the ragged edge and everyone who can fly is timed out. If you will notice, this happened in the month to month transition, a time frame that always requires extra pilot availability. Last month, I flew a day during transition to help out, This month, I just don't have the time. This sickout story is nothing more than Spirit management looking for a scape goat for their mismanagment.

Gee, and here I thought I had a story. Oh well, it won't be long before one of the other carriers starts job actions for more money.

Isn't monthly time based on a calander month? NWA's pilots were out of time at the end of July, not the beginning of Aug like Spirit.

Hey munchkin...........ever heard of the RLA? Job actions other than self-help at the appropriate time is considered illegal and will cost the Union or pilots involved BIG fines and/or jail time.

That's only one example of being "timed out". There are daily, weekly, monthly and yearly duty time limits.

Blahhhaaa!!!...*cough*..*sniffle*...UHHuummm. Damn! Just waisted another beer on the monitor.

Now that is funny stuff young grass hopper, funny stuff. Jail time ...good one...

So if I call in sick because I'm pissed, just how does one go about proving that I don't feel good enough to fly? Hmmmm? That whole self-certify thing and all?

Seriously though the title of this thread is a bit misleading. How many flights is "10%" of Spirits flight schedule (seriously)?
