Airlines are grounded, but gold valued

By Jenny Spitz, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 5:01 PM ET Oct. 24, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - A downgrade for JetBlue and cautious comments from AMR contributed to airline stocks losing altitude with investors this week.

The Amex Airline Index (XX:$XAL: news, chart, profile) fell 5 percent for the week. On Friday, J.P. Morgan downgraded JetBlue (JBLU: news, chart, profile) to "underweight" from "neutral" citing valuation and pricing pressure from Delta Air Line's (DAL: news, chart, profile) offshoot airline Song.

The media is entitled to their opinions. And this is perhaps, just that, one reporter/agency's opinion.

This isn't the first time, nor the last that JBLU stock valuation has been in the news. I'm not saying that Song hasn't had an effect because it certainly has. Like the DL guys say, time will tell.

See ya

Simmer down now

I don't know about that. If they're affecting us, it's not apparent in our load factors. Oh, and we charge more than they do.
By the way, this is my first post on this forum, be gentle and use plenty of lube.

Not Song but...

JetBlue Is Pulling Out of Atlanta After Intense Competition From Delta, AirTran

ATLANTA (AP) -- Discount airline JetBlue Airways is pulling out of Atlanta six months after it arrived, canceling flights to the West Coast because of intense competition from Delta Air Lines and AirTran Airways.

The media

Jet Blue 320, JP Morgan is not the "media". Believe me. Many fortune 500 companies spend plenty of time enlightening them on the positives the respective company. I'm not against JB, in fact I think they are the wave of the future, but the fact is if JP Morgan downgrades them people listen, period.

Yes, I know JP Morgan is not the media. My post said specifically "media/agency's" I believe. And yes, I know people listen to those agencies. (spelled it wrong in first post, sorry). I think that used to be in one of their ads years ago as well, "when ??? (I think it was EF Hutton) talks, people listen"??

Anyway, my entire point which it appears you missed was that JBLU stock has had this happen numerous times in it's short time on the open market. We know it is over rated, under valued, trading at XX times it value, and all that other stuff. And yes, people did listen this time and it went down some $7 odd dollars, maybe more. And did DL & FL pressure in ATL have something to do with it, absolutely. And is DL gonna give us grief in BOS, you betcha. And is SW concerned that we are buying 200 EMB190's, they certainly are. And is Fronter pissed because we are starting service from DEN to BOS, yes sirree Bob. The list goes on and on.

This is business, and so is the rise and fall of our stock price. We tend to stay focused on our own plans and let the stock fend for itself. The past two years of it's [JBLU Stock] life proves that it can and will take care of itself.

Hope that clears up what I meant.

See ya.

I don't know about that, Song is putting up a pretty good fight. I think it's a little early to start digging their grave!

I love it.

Jetblue320,

I thought that you guys were getting 100 of the 190's. Did I screw it up or what?

You are correct. Firm orders for 100 and options on 100 more.

Yes, they are indeed options. But they will be converted...you can take it to the bank.

JMHO, of course.

Yes, excuse me, 100 firm and 100 options. I was just talking in general terms to prove a point. Pardon my unexacting terminology.

Hey if Bar-ba-ra Stri-zan can shoot her mouth off about foreign policy, then us pilots can analyze the market, eh?

I saw this article on Northwest's problems with its new entertainment system (self-contained video/audio only) on their A330 aircraft. This system is manufactured by Matsu_s_hita which I believe is also the same company for Song's liveTV entertainment system. I would guess these are some "growing pains" that might effect Song's product and further delay it.

Northwest IFE Problems

While this is not exactly the same system, or installed in the same aircraft or aircraft seat, it doesn't sound like too big of a problem.

"The system offers 16 channels of music, a choice of 10 movies, three video games, shopping and in-flight information on flat-panel monitors embedded in or attached to the backs of seats. The system is on four A330s"

"He said Northwest is the first North American carrier to operate the Matsu**CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**a 3000I audio and video system.

The system has had problems, but it's performing more reliably than the entertainment system in the business-class sections of Northwest DC10-30s that fly the Atlantic, he said.

"A very small percentage of seats per aircraft have been affected, and in most cases, the impact on the passenger is a matter of minutes," Ebenhoch said."

The Song package is suppose to be much more extensive than this and offer many more options than JBLU. I believe Song is suppose to offer 45 free satelite channels, pay per view movies, internet access, inflight juke box and games. The first Song aircraft with this system is suppose to start flying this month, with the rest to follow soon after. I'm sure Song will face some of these challenges also.
