I'm considering filling out the form to remove your social security Number from FAA records and be issued a new certificates.

If you have done this....

Did they actually re issue ALL certificates CFI, Commercial, Ground Instructor without a hassal?

Is it bad when it comes time for a employer to investigate your background via the FAA?

Any other comments...

Thanks

I just mailed my form about 3 hours ago... I am also curious about the CFI, AGI, etc... Certificate numbers, I would assume ALL will be changed...

Falcon Capt.

Yup, they reissue all of your certificates with the new number. They all have to be the same number anyway.

I had mine done when I got my CFI renewed the last time. The guy at the FSDO (an inspector at my airline) wouldn't do it unless I changed the number. I think it is a good idea.

I did it with the form, no problem. They send you a new certificate for all of your ratings. I got four of them in the same envelope. Don't worry about an employer reserching your backround, it won't be any different. Remember NOT to put your SS number on your medical form anymore, as it won't be used in your airman's records. Good luck.

Why the bother?

The old style certificate has your SSN, permanent address, and birth date on all one handy piece of paper. This piece of paper is xerox'd about 100 times during your career and passed around to who knows how many people. In this day and age of identity theft (has happened to a friend of mine - he's out several grand so far while they are "fixing" everything) it can't hurt to eliminate one avenue of information. Also, you will recieve brand new squeaky clean certificates, which is nice. The form is actually quite efficient, especially for the FAA. Try it, you'll like it.......

Identity theft can screw up your life royally for years, costing you many thousands of $$ to just keep the IRS, creditors, police and others off your back while some degenerate is out there opening credit card accts, working jobs (& not filing with the IRS properly), getting cell phones, setting up long distance accts, etc. Not sure about you, but this would really suck for me.

When you fly Internationally, the PIC's Pilot Certificate number goes on all the ICAO flight plans not to mention a bunch of other paperwork... Not a great place to have your social security number floating around....

One of my co-workers did this form, said he got new certificates in 2 weeks...

I sent mine in yesterday, we'll see how long it takes...

I changed mine a few months ago. Took less than 3 weeks. The biggest problem is trying to remember the new number, I still don't have a clue what it is, I have to pull it out every time someone asks.

Just a quick question. If you check the first box they still have your SSN on file correct. The sencond box they totally get rid of your SSN all together? Which box is the best one the check? I am thinking the second. Sorry for the stupid question.

Thanks and Fly Safe.

second box

Just sent my form in, and I checked the second box as I think that removes your SS# from all the records...

Thanks for the info

Yeah, Pacific Flyer had some guy several years back advertising for pilots, many popular types (go figure), and asking for a copy of "licenses" and medical. Fraudulent charges were brought for whatever nefarious activities he was involved in.

Changed mine.

I checked the second, removed all use of the SSN...

I think the FAA may be assigning non SS cert. numbers automatically to all new pilot certificates. My last three students received new certificate numbers without specifically requesting them. In fact, one student who received his Private certificate two years ago (and instrument rating soon after) was already assigned a non SS cert. number, and he didn't request it either.

Kinda hoping it stays as my SS number for good, don't wanna memorize yet another number :-). I personally haven't had any problems with it (yet) and haven't heard of other pilots having identities stolen etc.. in this manner. Anyone know of any horror stories?

It only takes one to ruin it though. Why take the chances? It's only a number and if you don't give much instruction or once your done you won't need to right it as much. Why do you need to worry about memorizing your number anyways?

As a far as the . post I just wanted to move it back up to the top. It was getting pushed down to the bottom.
