Hey everyone,

What is latest inside scoop from Skywest? I am in the pool for the BRO. I am hearing from my some of my friends that there has been a Q400 sitting on the ramp that skywest is looking for. Does this mean that I may be waiting in the pool for a Very Very long time. Has anyone heard when the next EMB class will be? Which airplane do you think would be better to go into regarding upgrade times? Although I understand you dont get the choice. And for my last question, I currently work for a company getting turbine PIC time, with the chance to move into an older Jet with no glass. The pay would be much better, but I am not sure about the QOL being on call 24/7. . . If anyone has any answers to these questions, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks for your time!

Dh8d

My dispatch friend(s) from OO (SkyWest) confirmed that they are looking at the DH8D. The reason being, the Barzilia's are payload restricted now due to new FAA pax weights (can no longer take a full boat)and they are looking for better payload, performance, and range. He wasn't sure if/when this will be a "fer sher" thing!

Hope that helps!

i interview april 22 and was slotted for the bro. i recieved a call for a grondschool last week that is starting aug 2 for the rj. im not sure wen u interviewed so i hope i didnt just make you mad. but overall it should be good news, they might start bringing people from the bor to the rj. im not sure.

cheers and good luck!!

also my last job was unscheduled 135, i was on the cell phone 24/7 and was required to be wheels up from time of call in 30mins!! all i could do all day was sit on my arsh and wait for the phone to ring, and once it did it was off to the races. yeah i was making good money geting twin turbine pic but i was sick of it and opted for what will hopefully be a better life. we shall see LOL. but that was my decision i have a high value on my qualitly of life.

again good luck to u!!

Does anyone know the times they are looking for to switch from the BRO to the JEt? It seems like its kind of a random selection.

The whole Q400 thing has not been confirmed by anyone in management. I wouldnt get your hopes up to high on this one. As far as Bro classes go, I heard end of the summer. Id call and request the jet - cant hurt to ask. Classes every month. Good luck. Its a great company. Welcome aboard.

The Q400 has been doing a whirlwind tour it seems. We looked at it too. Doesn't mean we are getting it though...

If your in the pool, then you should have received an email from Camielle about a week or so ago stating what was going to happen. If you didn't get the email I'd suggest you send her an email telling her that. I think she mentioned she would be going through files and letting some people know if they would be switched to the RJ. As far as ground school, they said end of summer/early fall. I don't know if that means August or September. I'm assuming late september early October.

And the Q400 thing has been talked about lately on the company forums but nothing official. I"m sure management has the right idea and is well aware of what that aircraft can do. I'm sure if it was a good option for the company they would opt to go for it. And since they're not going for it, there must be a reason. They don't have $455 million in cash reserve for nothing. Theres a lot of smart people in St George that know what they're doing. I don't think luck had a lot to play with it either because this industry doesn't allow the lucky to survive. Only the best will make it through.

I've been in the pool since the first week of March. I also am anxious to be in ground school, but having this time off ain't that bad. After all, you've guys have a guaranteed job waiting for you in a few months max.

With 29 jets coming this year, (16 left), and 30 next year, things will be moving well. The company has a lot of nice people working for it. I can attest to the customer service/ramp side of it because I work it 5 days a week. All the employees put their heart and soul into making sure each flight goes out ontime. I SELDOM run into a disgruntled pilot. I talk to most of them as much as I can to get a gouge on what QOL is like and about 99% of them are very happy. And I"m excited that some of us are going to be a part of this. Heads up guys, (and gals....there are A LOT of women pilots at SKYW). See you guys on the line!

They've were kicking the de Havilland around when I was working for them in 1997. My money is on the 328Jet.

Thanks for all your reply's. And BRO is just the Brasilla. I am also just wondering for all of you that got called for a jet class that were in the brasilla pool, what were your times like?

Thanks

Hey,
Bro is the slang that the EMB-120 "Paddlejet" drivers use!
PBR

Don't forget "Brazilian King Air"

Just remember...

Props are for boats, Jets are for hot tubs...nuff said.

Also, just got back from class in SLC, and I have to report...nothing, nada, zilch. I tried guys, to get some good info from the instructors, but none would budge. The only good thing was that there was a class of 25 rj newhires starting next monday, and they told us that the sept 1 class would have 25 more newhires in it as well (RJ). (bad news was that only 5 upgrades would be in the class.) I couldn't get anything about EMB classes or about the Dash 8400 rumor. One instructor just looked at me and laughed, "nice try, but I know less that you." Riiiiiiighhtt. sorry, wish I had more to tell ya'll...

the only other thing is that scheduling is jr manning like crazy on botht the rj and emb with flights being cancelled, especially inthe cali emb system b/c of a lack of crews.

I heard that the training department had info on the 70-seat RJ almost a year before the official announcement. Maybe they're not training any more Bro crews because there's actually some truth to the Q400 rumors. Probably just wishful thinking...

That sure seems like a lot of RJ newhires. Aren't there more Bro FOs than that with transition bids in that are off seatlock?

I actually looked at the brofo bid list, hey i was bored, and it looks like most of the guys who have their bid in don't want to go to ORD/DEN/Cos and are holding out for the more senior i.e. california, rj bases. the other guys who are little more flexible are seatlocked for a while. I guess their timing just sucked a little. They did tell us that the 70's will go to either DEN or Cos, so look for those bases to expand a bit.

I hope you're right about the D8400, that thing is schweet, although under our current agreement, we'll fly it for the same rate as the emb.

Oh yeah, and I just got called for the fourth time this month to pick up open time!!!

ILS,

You've never heard of the mighty 'Bro? You should get out more often. ;-)

We don't call RJ guys "mainline SkyWest" for nothing.

Jets ARE for hot tubs!

What???

I thought this thread was about SkyWest.

Air Midwest is Mesa's "1900 division," right? (or is that Midwest Express -- I always get the names confused, no offense to anyone). And who is CorpEx?

Agree, for some reason I never have heard of the mighty "BRO" :) My Bad.....

I remember what it was like waiting for a class date so here is my own unscientific assessment of the likelihood and timing of a new hire FO Brasilia class.

{All numbers should be reasonably accurate}

First off, for August, there are 216 Bro lines across all domiciles. There are 269 active Bro FOs. This gives a 24.5% reserve which is at the high end of what is desirable. This would indicate that there is no current need for additional FOs. It is possible the shortage that some have stated they are experiencing (being asked to pick up open time etc.) is related to the fact that it is peak vacation time.

So there are two primary places for Bro FOs to go

1. Transition to RJ.
There are currently 79 RJ Transition bids. However all but 25 of them are seatlocked until January 2005 or later. Of those 25 who are not locked, about three quarters are for senior domiciles such as SBA and PSP. This means that since most of the growth is occurring in ORD and COS, there will be very little movement from the Bro FO to the RJ Fo for the remainder of 2004. This is great news if you are in the RJ pool, but not so good for the Bro paddlers. In 2005, the floodgates will open and there will probably be a lot of movement across.

2. Upgrade to Bro Capt.
We have been told no Capt upgrades the rest of the year :-( There are currently 265 active Brasilia captains which is also about a 24% reserve. In order to run Capt upgrades, captains will need to move on themselves.

However, there is some hope here. If the company runs RJ Captain classes (which they will have to because of the RJ growth), quite a few EMB Capts will move on (whatever the bases, there are plenty of bids in for all bases). If enough move on the company will have to run Bro Upgrades. This will get the FO group moving reducing the Bro FO reserves and should nessitate a need for new hire Bro FOs.

Suppose for example that we need 20 new ORD RJ Capts and 20 COS RJ Capts. Using the current standing bids, 8/20 for ORD would be Bro Captains and 9/20 for COS would be Bro Captains. Next suppose the company decided to replace these transitions and run a 20 person Bro Captain Class, 12 would be Bro FOs. This might prompt the company to run a Bro New Hire class.

This is simplified of course. There are so many variables here but the gist is that the continued expansion will lead to the need for Bro new hires and that for 2004 most of the need is likely to come in a trickle down fashion from the running of RJ Captain classes.

So the company has told us they will run 90 RJ Captain upgrades for the rest of the year. Using my fuzzy trickle down (Reagan) math, this might indicate a need for about 20-25 Bro FOs or so. Add in a few for direct CRJ transitions and my forecast is for 30 Bro new hires for the rest of the year. Two classes of 15, most likely.

You can see how sketchy my math is and I am just a line pilot with no inside knowledge whatsoever. I'm just on a really boring overnight.

Some more info

As an addendum to my last post : The company is filling RJ classes on September 1st and 22nd. Apparently these classes are supposed to be 15 Capt and 15 FO each for a total of 30 of each over the two classes.

I estimate that there will be a movement of about 10 EMB FOs. (And 15 EMB Capts). These means about 20 new RJ FOs over the two classes.
