United Express and Frontier Airlines planes come close to colliding.
Days before Thanksgiving, a United Express and Frontier Airlines plane came disturbing close to colliding midair, the Federal Aviation Administration says. The FAA is now investigating the incident during which the two jets were apparently so close to each other that they had to take evasive action to head off a crash.

The incident happened on Nov. 23 around 7 a.m. as the two jets were approaching Denver International Airport.

One of the planes, United Express flight 6764 from Lincoln, Neb., operated by regional airline Skywest, was in a string of planes following a set path heading to the airport.

The other plane, Frontier flight 1539 from Omaha, operated by parent airline Republic, was flying along a parallel path. Controllers needed to put the Frontier jet into the same route as the United Express plane to line them up for landing.

That's when the mistake happened, an aviation source told ABC's Denver affiliate KMGH, which first reported the story.

Controllers gave the Frontier pilots an incorrect heading -- forcing them to make a U-turn, the source told KMGH. That put the jet right in the path of the United Express plane -- which was just 200 feet above it and only a little more than a mile-and-a-half away, closing quickly, just seconds apart.

"When you've got airplanes coming within 200 feet of each other or aimed at each other, it's a very dangerous situation," said ABC News aviation consultant John Nance.

On board the two regional jets, collision avoidance systems sounded in the cockpits, forcing the jets to take evasive action to avoid a collision, an FAA spokesman told KMGH.

"You need to follow that command right now," Nance said. "So your heart rate goes up and you're immediately involved."

Planes Close to Colliding

KMGH, said that in the control center, the planes merged on radar and that the aviation source told them "they were within a blink of an eye of colliding."

The FAA said in a statement that it is "investigating a serious loss of the required separation between aircraft."

"We want to fully understand how this event occurred and ensure all the necessary safety measures are in place," the FAA said.

A third plane, Frontier flight 615 was next in line behind the United Express flight and also lost critical separation with the oncoming plane, but was not in immediate danger.

In the end, all the planes landed safely and it is unclear how much, if anything, those early morning passengers knew about the incident.

I heard of this. It was a good thing all secondary measures worked, and pilot judgment was used properly. Cudos to all crew involved. Fly safe, stay alert. Always.
 
Controller issued an instruction that included an incorrect waypoint (he meant to say the adjacent waypoint on the arrival). The pilots followed the issued instruction, which resulted in a loss of separation. Pilots complied with ATC, then complied with TCAS RA when that came up. Nowhere in this incident did the pilots of either aircraft screw up or compound the error.

Hey Copernicus how about your airline dragging its filthy toes to ensure the Midwest guys are screwed while you guys keep getting mainline aircraft for turboprop wages. That is just as bad as crossing THE line.

I don't see any mainline partners flying 190's anymore and the one Major airline that did flew it for less wages. Don't bring in B6's wages because they flew that aircraft for a couple of years for less, only now are the "industry standard". For the sake of our airlines I hope that the 190 and airbus kill WN guppys. Now why don't you get back to Microsoft flight sim so you can stay current Mr. Right seat captain. How's the job hunting going with Compass? I hear they have some good wages flying the Guppy killer also.

A am sure I have said this before, but it bears repeating: Please do not paint all the RAH group with Popeye's brush. He is a living example of the 5% rule.

Well if you want to know me, I have 4500 hours and furloughed from XJT and I am a current C130 guy for the military. I hope for everyone's sake, you and your dbag partners in career degradation fail in this interest. I know there are a lot of good guys at RAH but the few of you make that majority look like scums. I do not wish for anyone to be out of work but when you are looking to replace good paying jobs willingly you deserve it. For your info I never entertained the idea of working for Compass.

Yes, it can be MEL'd and I can tell you from experience that you get an eerie feeling flying into ORD and LAX without it.

Ok let me get this straight, in 05 you quit your first job at a regional because you had a "disagreement" with the captain. You total time at that point was 1100 hrs. You say you wanted to fly in the military but instead you took a job with xjt and got furloughed. Now you tell me you have a total of 4500 hours and fly c130 for the coast guard.... Right? Your hours don't add up or you pencil whipped the crap out if your log book. I'm assuming you were a 07 hire at xjt to still be furloughed. I don't know what kind of flying you've been doing but the math dosent add up. I know while at xjt on reserve you didn't break 800 hours for the year.

If you were worried about pay and flying you wouldn't have taken a job anywhere near the regionals.
 
Is there a lot of that pencil whipping at the regionals? I thought you only needed to have soloed to get a job the way it is, why be a scumbag lying toad on top of pft'ing it?
