I was driving through the state of Mississippi last month. On the highway I was driving on it had litttle white planes painted on it. Does this tell pilots they can land their small plane on it? Or something else, thanks!

No...

the inbred cops in that state just have GED's for education...so the state paints the VASCAR calibrated road markings in the shape of airplanes, so the cops know what those markings are for.

LOL

Very true Wright! The cops on Long Island make close to 100,000 a year. They still think its the civil warin Mississippi. Not putting down the south, been all over the south and love it. Sc, GA, NC, Tn , va, tx. miss IS A place of its own. Driving threw the town of Oxford Miss, the home of Ole miss. The campus is filledwith the girls driviing BMW's, Benz's ml 420, audi, land rovers. Go figure. The poorest state i nthe countey and girls act like their poop doesnt stink

I was just being facecious...

I'm from the Richmond VA area my self. Tested for the Henrico County Division of Police once...way back in the early 90's. Starting pay back then was 43,000 a year, if you had a degree...which I do. Went against 1,000 applicants for 12 jobs. Pretty tough competition. (Anybody from MISSISSIPPI or whatever, thinks my comment was off hand...ehhhh It was just a joke dude. For more humor with sovereign states, try kicking around the UPPER PENENSULA of Michigan once, it's like a prozac infused dueling banjo land! You cannot legally possess a BATF registered silencer in Michigan...but inbreeding is alive and well!)

Forgive my ignorance: VASCAR?

speeel chex in isle 9 pleeze!

sorry bout the bad spelling up there...

VASCAR is a visual speed detection system...could be in cars or planes.

In a plane...the trooper knows the fixed distance of the marks and just visually sees you on the road...mark to mark. He starts timing you by pressing a button, stops timing you by pushing the button. Computer takes the fixed distance and computes your speed.

In a car a cop could use VASCAR by passing a landmark and starting a measurement by pressing a button, then passing a second land mark by pressing a button...measures that distance. then the policeman sits in a secluded area, where he can see the two landmarks...you pass the first one, he starts the timer and when you pass the second landmark, stops the timer. Computer calculates your speed. Your RADAR detector says nothing and you get pulled over. The cop in the car can also use those painted marks as...excuse the pun...FIXED DISTANCE MARKERS.

hey Typhoon1244...

Features_Benefits.htm

The above is a link to a manufacturer of VASCAR units. The link takes you to a page with a photo of the unit itself. The menu on the left side of the screen of that page will take you to other areas of interest about that company and the VASCAR units. It's a method that's been around for a long time...nothing new. Problem is, it requires the operator to actually observe the traffic violator...instead of waiting for a beep from a car mounted radar speed detection system to wake the patrolman up or get him to look up from his newspaper and coffee.

>>They still think its the civil warin Mississippi. Not putting

While going to college in Georgia, I got in a fairly heated debate with a professor about some moot point in class. In a last-ditch effort to prove my point, I asked, (rhetorically) "who won the civil war?" He replied, (much to my shock) "Who said it's over?"

When grading my next exam, he also took off points for each place I referred to the conflict as the 'Civil War'. He preferred to call it the 'War of northern Aggression'.

Welcome to the South. I will say, however, that the college female population in Oxford is something worth experiencing, if only once.

You gotta be kidding me with this VASCAR thing! Basically, it's a stopwatch and a calculator that divides distance by time, all packaged in an expensive black box. The cops probably think it's magic. How much are we spending on this 'technology'? Give them a timer and an E6B for pete's sake.

KatanaBob,
I feel your pain, went to high school in Northern Mississippi and for my first year of college at Ole Miss. They haven't caught on to the whole the slaves are free now concept. But I do agree the females are hot. Made my transfer to Riddle somewhat depressing.

Hey 172driver...laugh while you can...

VASCAR is undetectible and is used every day. Go buy the Valentine One radar/lidar detector. Stick it on your dash. Drive like a drunk golliwog in your dumb blonde girlfriends beamer. Then wonder why the man has you pulled over and you got no alert on your 400.00 dollar radar/lidar detector. Then tell me how out dated VASCAR is. Hehehehe...

It IS what they use to clock you from the airplane. They don't use traffic radar from the plane. They use a VASCAR or a VASCAR based system.

I already made a long post here on this board about speeding and the fact that my expensive radar/lidar unit is sitting in the bottom drawer of my Craftsman toolbox. It's all about technique and not the black box. The black box will suck you into being lazy. Ask my wife about how many times I kicked out the cruise on the way up to cresting a hill on a highway, only to see a cop microwaving cars on the back side of the hill, or how many times we KNEW the State Troopers were using a plane on the highway ahead of us. Alert...that's the word. They may not be able to pass a law that says you cant use use a cell phone and drive at the same time...but they can sure as hell bust you for not slowing down in time for seeing the cop...hehehehehehe! BLAB AWAY.

your professor was right. It could legitimately be called the War of Northern Aggression.

It was a war between two groups of one nation, making it a civil war. However, *most* civil wars involve two groups fighting for control of the entire nation. The South didn't want control of the country, they just wanted independence.

Welcome to the South. I will say, however, that the college female population in Oxford is something worth experiencing, if only once.
Sorry you're disappointed. guess it wouldn't do any good to relate "our" take on all the d@mn yankees moving down here for the last 20-30 yrs! ;)

Nothing like a good southern woman to keep you warm at night. I live along the ms coast for 10 yrs. Totally different world south of I-10.

Perspective, perhaps. Except that the confederacy attempted to divide the country, split the union. A better word for that would be high treason.

Difference between a Yankee and a Dam*ed Yankee.

A Yankee just comes to visit; a Dam*ed Yankee stays.

A few years back I was sitting in Lord Jim's, an ex-pat bar in Rio, trying to carry on a conversation with a couple of local women. This fat bald drunken British guy kept butting in and referring to me as a "colonist". Me, I don't spend a lot of time dwelling on the revolutionary war, other than from an abstract historical perspective ... yet here was this fool, trying to make the revolutionary war a present part of his reality. We ignored him and eventually he went away. Every time I hear some Southerner saying that "The civil war isn't over" or "The south will rise again", I am reminded of this guy; some pathetic drunken loser who has so little in his life that he clings to a war the happened generations before the lifetime of any currently living person.

You know what they say: "Keep the south beautiful, stick a Yankee on the bus."

or maybe secession, if you'll recall your history, US and state government. The only major difference between what the original 13 colonies did in the late 18th century and what the CSA did 100 years later (aside from the Constitutional provisions for state soverignty), was that the Southern states lost the resulting conflict.

A-squared - I don't much care for your characterization. Your comments *remind me* that those not capable of a civil, thoughtful debate on a topic will instead just sling a few names.

Also, why do you sign your posts "regards" after making your s#itty comments?

I've been wondering about that too. I think it's because he's an insincere @#%&*!

But I could be wrong.

Flywithastick,

You may not have noticed, but the inability of some southerners to let the Civil War fade into history was one of the topics of this thread well before you and others began discussing the meaning and causes of the Civil War. You see, threads often have several related, but separate discussions going concurrently. My comments were adding to that theme, not to yours. As far as not caring for my comments, if you aren’t one of those who run around believing that the south will rise again, my characterization shouldn’t disturb you as it obviously wasn’t directed at you, nor was it directed at southerners in general. If you believe that it is an inaccurate characterization, by all means, explain why it is off base.

If, however. you are one of those who believe that the Civil War is still very much alive, and it’s just a matter of time before Dixie rises up and whups some yankee ass, well, yes, you are included in that characterization. If that characterization bothers you, perhaps you ought to consider why it bothers you, rather than merely voicing you objections to it. If you are in that group to which that characterization was addressed, perhaps you could answer this; How is saying "The south will rise again" or "The civil War Isn’t Over" somehow more intelligent, or more honorable, or less petty, or less juvenile than the British barfly still living the Revolutionary War? I would say there are far more parallels than dissimilarities.

A good portion of my family tree is rooted in Ireland. I suppose that I could spend a lot of time and energy obsessing about what happened between my distant ancestors and someone else’s distant ancestors, but I don’t. Life is too short.

As for the regards, sometimes I mean it sincerely, sometimes it is dripping with irony.
I suspect that most can tell which is which.

Rereading your post, I see where you did qualify your comment. Obviously, I responded it too quickly, inferring you were speaking generally of all Southerners. You have my appology. I have no great respect for those who seriously believe the South will or should "rise again."

As I said above, I took your comments as a general negative characterization of all Southerners. I have no hopes for any future action by Southern states. My interest lies only with understanding the history of the period and how Southern Americans are viewed currently. As with all groups, there are those who fit into the extemities. Those who you characterize in your comments would be the extremists and not typical.

Now I would be open to discussion on Texas seceeding from the United States! Unfortunately, this idea is about 20-30 years past due. We have so many other people who've come here, on average there's little to no personal identity with being a Texan any longer. I believe we would thrive as an independent nation - again.

happy flying (really!)

So all Southerners sppell "appology" like that? :D

It's okay, I are a southerner too...born in Florida, raised in Tennessee and Texas. Of course, all my friends and neighbors in Florida were Jewish folks from New York. They never really got into all this "the South shall rise again" nonsense. Meshuga.

Flywithastick,

Sorry that you initially misunderstood my comments.

>>>My interest lies only with understanding the history of the period and how Southern Americans are viewed currently.

Nothing wrong with that. History is important, and I would never suggest that it be forgotten, just that it be viewed as history, not current events. I realize that the folks we're discussing are the extremists, but they are common enough to color outsider's perceptions of southerners.
Take for example Katanabob's professor. It's one thing to speak of the Civil War as the War of northern aggression, it's done to make a point, and the point is that there's a lot more to the Civil War than the junior high history books let on and Northern economic exploitation of the south was probably a significant element. Ok, all well and good, but when the professor stoops to deducting points from an exam for referring to the war by it's most comonly accepted title, he is no longer teaching and becomes a petty tyrant, abusing his position to retaliate against a "Yankee" I'm sure that left a pretty strong impression with Katanabob.

Regarding Texas secession, I don't know, sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and it's difficult to see all the ways in which that is true. There's a certain amount of popular support for Alaska sececeding, and it's appealing at an emotional level. I think that if we did though, we'd be pretty rudely surprised when the flow of federal dollars stopped. I think a lot of Alaskans don't have an appreciation for how much Federal funding we receive compared to the Federal taxes we pay.

regards (sincerely)

Funny, I was just thinking what would happen if a military coup would take place right now. Conservatives have whipped themselves up in a frenzy as of late, with a healthy doze of anger stemming from the recent tensions with Islam and our Chief peppering his speaches with "God this" and "God that". Liberals are nowhere to be found, having associated themselves with "un-patriotic" causes and having suffered quite a few damaging blows from immoral conduct.
Who would win? South is still pretty conservative, I mean, they still take public school children to Christian revival celebrations and go to religious conventions en masse. Army would stand behind a more conservative agenda, and the time is more ripe than ever.

So, any thoughts? Oh, and I hope I have offended both hawks and doves with the above, so as not to make you feel left out

And for me? I'd just head down to South America if sh!t hit the fan

So, you ever *really* been out of Michigan - seriously?! ;)

Lots of folks did just that in the 1860's. Still quite a few of anglo decent in some areas there as I understand it.

As for a coup or revolution, I don't believe either would be remotely possible with things the way they are right now. the possibility of a coup would be near nil just becasue the mil is so disciplined. A revolution would require things to be really bad economically, disease/health or from a security standpoint - real Old Testament Wrath of God type bad. we aren;t aywhere nearly that bad off. how'd ya like those Biblical refences?! :D :D

the only revolutionary thing I'd like to see is taking all the lawyers and shipping them somewhere very far away...
