I just saw the video...

these guys just dead sticked a freakin' airbus into the water...and everyone lived. dude....dude...seriously. i've woken up in a cold sweat having dreams that weren't even close to as scary as than that!

Mookie... 3200', both engines dead. La Guardia and Teterboro too far away... need a landing area within 10 miles, day, VFR... big river....???

Not taking anything away from this crew... but if day, VFR, mid-town Manhattan with a calm body of water and a few hundred yards to shore is your worst nightmare??? How about same situation... but night, storming, low vis, mid-Atlantic with nearest rescue boats 12+ hours away? How about a dual engine failure over the polar? Same crew, different circumstances.... I feel very safe in saying the outcome would have been drastically different in either of the two examples I presented above.

Excellent job for this crew, this day. A "miracle"... sorry, but don't buy it. It was the result of many years of experience and an excellent crew working their craft. No doubt they did a fine job and am very happy we have a crew to admire... until they are burdened with all the court testifying and lawsuits from survivors trying to cash in.

Fact is... within a very short time period... guessing maybe 20 seconds or so... the flight crew assessed the dual engine failure, began to establish a best glide speed and rapidly calculated the limited glide distance available. With La Guardia and Teterboro removed, the options of Hudson or crowded neighborhoods became clearer. Great choice and execution by the entire crew for this very successful outcome. 30 minutes later on a transatlantic and the outcome might be entirely different with the exact same crew.

Considering Sully's CRM qualifications I would hope that not only is his entire crew on, but that they are allowed to speak without question as to the responsibilities of each position, so once and for all the public get EDUCATED on the industry. This is a once on a lifetime chance for them to make a difference and potentially change the value of the profession again.

I really really hope he shows up with his FO and crew. If he doesn't show up with them and has his uniform on, I'll be very disappointed. We'll see...........
 
He had been scheduled to give his first public interview on Monday morning to NBC "Today" show host Matt Lauer, but the appearance was canceled Sunday at the request of the U.S. Airline Pilots Association.

Stephen Bradford, president of the pilots association, which represents the pilots on Flight 1549, said he had asked Sullenberger not to engage in any media activities for the time being. He said this was because the pilots association has "interested party" status with the NTSB which allows it to participate in the investigation.

"If the NTSB perceives that we are in any way compromising the objectivity of the investigation by innocuously releasing information to the media, our status will be rescinded and we will be unable to help determine the causal factors leading up to this very positive and well-documented outcome," he said.

Sullenberger released a statement through a family spokesperson, Alex Clemens, saying the family was deferring to the advice of the pilots association. "The Sullenbergers continue to thank their many well-wishers for the incredible outpouring of support," the statement said.

USAPA could always sue Sully. Seham's probably working up the papers as we speak.

Poor USAPA (Under Sea Airline Pilot's Association) they can't get no respect from anyone including the NTSB who probably never heard of them. They don't keep tabs on what goes on in the back of vans.

NTSB would welcome ALPA's participation. Always have - always will.

I heard USAPA totally dropped the ball on this one. And with Sully's previous ALPA experience, they came and offerred help.

He probably cringes at all of the constant references to Capt Sullenberger's work with the ALPA Safety Committee. Once again demonstrating what a complete tool he is (Bradford). They prob threatened Capt Sullengerger with a lawsuit if he continued to discuss his association and work with ALPA.

Actually, the investigation is not yet over. USAPA is a party to the NTSB inivestigation, as is the IAM and probably the AFA.

While this is going on anything said publicly could compromise the investigation.

No doubt many US Airways pilots were involved in some ALPA committees...now they are represented by USAPA...so what?



Cancelling this appearance is a good call, no matter who said it first.

Good question. Why do they put all of their efforts into dividing the pilot group and pursuing dead-end lawsuits? Because they're short-sighted vindictive thugs.

100% correct, you beat me to it. Regardless of your feeling about USAPA, and granted the 'children' will not throw stones and call names, but it was the right call to politely ask him (or advise him) to cancel the interview. And, I believe if ALPA was the representive body, they would have done the same; as it is alway ill advised to give any public statements (or interviews) this early in an investigation. Also, the union represents him in this incident/accident, and is currently a participating part in the NTSB investigation.

As I said, smart decision to cancel the interview, as all you are really doing is 'feeding the media frenzy'

Also, if he was going to do the interview; I agree with others, would be very sad if he showed up there without the entire crew.

Reference a few little facts the media missed in their 'hero worship' of Capt. Sully, as point out by the NTSB already;

--right after the plane was in the water, a passenger pushed the aft F/A out of the way and tried to open one of the rear doors. He did get it open because the F/A quickly stopped him, as he started to open it, water started coming in, and the F/A quickly latched it. After she made sure both rear doors were secure/latched, she made her way to the middle of the a/c and assisted with the evac. It wasn't until almost everyone was off the a/c that she noticed a gash in her leg. She was the F/A who had a leg fracture and need surgery at the hospital.

Note: Look carefully at the first pics of the a/c in the water, just after the landing, bother aft doors are clearly way below the waterline. Had she not quickly stopped the passenger, and made sure the door were closed/secured. That thing would have filled with water and probably sank in 2-3 mins. and a lot of people would have been in the water freezing.

Quick action from the aft F/A probably help keep that plane from sinking like a stone. Passengers often panic and will push anyone and everyone out of the way and grab for the nearest door to get out. Often it can end up killing people.

--in many of the pics. and videos the F/O is shown clearly at the 1R door, assisting passenger out of the a/c into the slide/raft, the station/duty for the F/O in a ditching at most carriers. It was also reported later that the F/O gave his shirt to a passenger who was pulled from the water, soaking wet, to keep him from freezing.

But, the media said that 'one man' single-handly saved all of those people.....guess other than him, everyone else was just a passenger??

The pilot will speak to Matt Lauer on Monday morning in Washington, D.C. He’ll also be appearing on CBS’ “The Early Show” and ABC’s “Good Morning America” later that morning.




I see that it is now CANCELED....just wondering why he would have had to go to DC to speak to Matt Lauer...if it had been me, if someone is that desperate to get the first interview, they can get to ME. Bizarre. ..And why Matt Lauer of all people? YIKES
