When somebody objects to airplane noise & pollution, I point out that it keeps people off the highways, thereby saving lives. I know, there are flaws in that argument, but it usually works. :p

I have studied it and that is completely false. Please post your findings as to not only the president who was in charge at the time but who controlled the senate and house. You will find when the purse strings were controlled by the republicans the economy did a lot better than when the democrats had the majority.

Just look at the last 14 years. For the first 6 years that Bush was in office the economy was humming along. The dems took over the senate in 2004 and the house in 2006. Shortly after that everything started to go down hill to the point that the Democrats have had complete control of 2 out of the 3 branches for the last 8 years and for a while there had autonomy to do anything they wanted with no GOP input. Remember Obamacare, cash for clunkers, shovel ready jobs, bailouts. All which caused the U.S. to run trillion dollar deficits every year until the GOP took over the house and put a damper to the runaway spending that the dems were doing.

It isn't hard to make the economy seem better when 80 billion a month is pumped into it by the Obama regime but until you put your big boy pants on and actually look at the spending problem the dems have then you are just fooling yourself. The dems are know as the "tax and spend" party for reason.

Right
The democrats caused the meltdown in 2008?
You really need to do more research
Financial services modernization act
= bubble economies that we've seen.
Clinton signed it- republicans pushed for it- led to too big to fail-
Republicans have obstructed any attempt to correct it
Republicans have obstructed any attempt to raise taxes on the current generation that built this debt and eventually my generation will have to pay for it.
I really don't give a f^ck if you don't like the govt or our president or the spending- we need to pay our bills, not pass them along with interest to the next generation- the damage republicans do obstructing any attempt to address the issue is inexcusable. Democrats don't like republican spending any more than you like ours. So go f^ck yourself that this holding our govt hostage from new taxes is actually helping anything- all it is is a scam by republicans to not pay for debt they racked up. And most of their base will be retired before they will have to. It's insane and corrupt at the base level of the Republican Party- it's you that's the problem. Not your leaders. Not who's in office. It's your belief that bc you don't like democrats that we all shouldn't still pay the bills, completely ignoring that democrats don't like you or your spending anymore than you like ours.
None of which is a legitimate rationalization for doing what republicans do to our economy.

PCL is 100% right on air travel.
Not only that, the pollution isn't concentrated which does help mitigate many of the environmental concerns of that exhaust.

But ultimately, what is it with you people. Bc we fly airplanes and drive cars we shouldn't support innovation in both fuel and technology that make those modes of transportation more efficient and healthier?
Who knew conservatives bought into the hippie line that everyone should be walking and riding bikes everywhere ?

The meltdown was largely caused by the housing bubble which was a major component of the Dems legislation on trying to every minority into a home even though they couldn't afford it. President George W. Bush went to Congress numerous times (17 times in 2008) to warn them that quasi-governmental home lending agents Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were going to destroy the home market in particular, and the economy in general. But Democrats continuously ignored him, shut down his proposals along party lines, and continued coercing Fannie and Freddie for campaign contributions. Guess which party controlled Congress in 2008.

Please tell me exactly what bill it was that the congress stopped that would have made everything better? You libs just throw out thing like "the party of no" but have no substance to back it up. Lets talk about some of the 50 bills the congress sent over to the Senate all sitting on Harry Reid desk not being allowed to vote on ranging anywhere from immigration to healthcare to budget items.

It is funny that with 2/3 control of the government for the last 9 years you somehow can blame the mess we are still currently in on the GOP.

F^ckstick, you've cherry picked one very short route on a 15 year old airframe at the bottom end of mainline capacities and you've specified that it's not even full! Of course if you skew the numbers like that you can arrive at whatever numbers you want. But the aggregate data is not in dispute. Modern commercial air travel is more efficient than car travel. Period.

Settle down, guzzler. I had fun writing it and I spiked your BP, so mission accomplished. As far as cherry picking, you're wrong. First segment I pulled out of thin air.

But hey, the POS Prius wasn't full either and Delta runs hourly MD-88, 757, and Airbus service on that route so.....

Keep believing you know it all. It's all you've got.

Recessions are cyclical... blame is like randomly cutting the music to see who ends up in the remaining (Oval Office) chair.

I think (hope) you all know how the monetary system works and how credit ebbs and flows to create booms and busts inherently. This is the overwhelming reason an economy cannot sustain itself in a linear model and will inevitably contract. Banks lend money, people invest & spend, but eventually the money needs to find its way home and the future spending will HAVE to decrease to fulfill repayment.

Spending is oil flowing through the engine, lubricating the economy. All the parts (people/entities) get some oil. When money stops moving we get friction and eventually a seize (recession).

Liberals and conservatives can argue the balls and strikes thinking it affected the outcome of the entire season, but its no ones fault other than the inherent flaws found in the system itself.

Guzzler. Classic.

Tanker, you should have ran your numbers in the Beech 1900 so PCL/guzzler could follow along.

Blue side and Otto, you aren't wrong that bubble economics are a factor and the housing bubble was exacerbated by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but that avoids responsibility for the root cause. Again, it has been both parties, so this isn't partisan. A republican bill, which Clinton did sign rolled back protections Glass-steagal implemented which kept us away from most big bubbles since the Great Depression.
Otto is absolutely right, that if capitalistic structures are left to their own devices, they will result in huge bubbles, one after another. Glass steagal dampened, but did not eliminate them. So the question becomes, are larger bubbles good or bad for the country? Is it more or less capitalistic to let major banks and corporations that make up the foundation of our financial system consolidate to a size where if they do fail, we are all in a depression?
Doesn't that give the same dynamic of having a massive federal bank, instead of a relatively small fed dealing with hundreds of banks.

It's fairly common sense that more banks are better- if one fails it has a negligible impact on the economy. As it still stands now, and republicans still obstruct, our foundation banks have gotten even larger and control more- ultimately giving them the best leverage over American resources they could have- too big to fail. They can now take risks (and you're seeing more and more subprime and variable rate mortgages again- I know you've heard the commercials promoting variable APR's and if remotely aware said to yourself "wtf? Back with those again??") - risks they know the US government, no matter how conservative, will ultimately back up, or face a depression.
That's too much leverage.

Remember please that capitalism is defined as having no one competitor able to influence, much less control, the price of a good or service.

Think that's what we have now?

6 years of this sh/t, break up the banks.

Until then, prepare for the next bubble

Most accurate post on this thread.

Obama did do lot of things even without Repubs support....and seems Repubs never agree with that accusation....here is the list ....lets see if someone willing to still refute....

Tax on Companies that ship jobs overseas- A bill that would have eliminated a tax break that companies get when they ship jobs overseas. Republicans blocked this, allowing companies to keep the tax break they receive when they ship jobs to other countries.
Political Ad disclosure bill- Would have required all donors to political campaigns to reveal themselves. Republicans blocked this, not once but twice.
Subpoena Power for the Committee investigating the BP Oil Spill ? Give subpoena power to the independent committee responsible for investigating BP?s roll in the oil spill. Republicans attempted to block this.
The Small Business Jobs Act -would give LOCAL, community banks access to billions of dollars to loan to small businesses. Republicans blocked this, then attempted to block it a second time and failed.
The DREAM Act- Gives immigrant youth who were brought here as children a path to citizenship by earning a college degree or serving the military for 2 years. Republicans blocked this.
Repeal of ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell?- Would have repealed the law that forces gay and lesbian services members to lie about their sexuality and gives the military the right to discharge soldiers based on their sexuality. Republicans blocked this many times and Democrats were finally able to pass it with the support of just 2 Republicans.
Senator Franken?s Anti-Rape Amendment to the Defense Appropriations Bill ? Makes it so that women raped overseas while working for foreign contractors have the right to have their case heard in an American court instead of having their case mediated by the company they work for. Only Republican men voted against this, but it passed.
Benefits for Homeless Veterans- Would have expanded benefits to homeless veterans and homeless veterans with children. Republicans blocked this.
Affordable Health Care For America Act- Prevents insurance companies from discriminating against you on the basis of ?pre-existing conditions?. Requires that insurance companies spend 85 cents of every dollar that you pay on your actual health care. Limits health insurance companies profit margins. Republicans blocked this for months before it finally passed and have vowed to repeal it if they are elected.
Health Care for the 9/11 First Responders who got sick from being at Ground Zero- Would provide billions of dollars in health care to help the 9/11 First Responders who were at Ground Zero on 9/11 and are now sick because of it. Republicans blocked this.
The Jobs Bill- Offsets the payroll tax for 1 year for companies that hire new employees, or people receiving unemployment insurance. Also gives other tax incentives to companies hiring new employees. Republicans attempted to block this.
Wall Street Reform- Puts stricter regulations on the banks, preventing them from becoming ?too big to fail?. Curbs reckless spending practices that caused the banking crisis. Republicans attempted to block this.
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act- Pumped billions of dollars into state and local Governments to prevent us from sinking into a second Great Depression. Republicans opposed this but now want to take credit for the parts of it that we know are successful.
Oil Spill Liability- Raises the liability on what companies can be made to pay to clean up after an oil spill. Republicans blocked this.
Immigration Reform- Republican suggested comprehensive immigration reform until Obama supported it. Now they?re rabidly opposed to it and even voted against their own legislation. Republicans blocked this.

Republicans blocked this bill for 8 weeks before it finally passed. Republicans blocked this for 8 weeks before it finally passed.
