Hey all,

I know how everybody hates these types of questions. I was hoping for a "not so rookie" question for my first post. But...

I have a job offer from both Comair and SkyWest, each have pros and cons in my mind...which should I go with? Class starts in a week and about three weeks respectively.

Help?!

Ask yourself this:

Where do I live/want to live?

The rest is all magic eight-ball stuff...

The place with the fastest upgrade now will probably have the slowest when you're ready to go to the left seat. Both are great companies. I'd pick your favorite base and go with that.

Without debating the pros/cons of unionism, at Comair you do have a little more job protection if you pi$$ off the wrong person, the company can't just fire you like Skywest can.

If you don't piss off anybody, then you don't have anything to worry about. As for unions, they are a third party business with one agenda in mind..."let's fill our pockets as deep as we can while taking down everyone in our way."

Riiiight. We'll really be dragging everyone down when we get 200% override to lift the eight hour day so we can do coast-to-coast turns. The heck with safety, show me the money!

Didn't mean to hijack the thread. Comair

Hey you all, lets all agree to fly 70's for the price of 50 seaters. We can all be Skywest. Then the company is getting more, 70 seaters, cool.

both are good companies. Rogue5 summed it up. Figure out where you want to live. Don't worry about upgrading at this point (worry about getting hired and passing checkrides) because what's fast now won't be in a few years.

CMR has CVG, JFK (probably where most if not all new hires will go eventually), GSO and MCO (senior).

SKY has a bazillion bases, some rather exotic (as compared to GSO or CVG ;) ).

Or you could take the first class offered.

Either choice is fine. Have fun!
:D

How long do you guys/gals think upgrade at Skywest will be for someone with a seniority number of say 1950ish? Thanks. :)

Just curious... why does CMR have the GSO base? Does DL have a minihub there?

Glad to hear you know so much about airline unions. Have you ever been in one? ALPA is not your local construction worker's union. I think they're run a little differently than you have described. Having been a union rep for 2 years, volunteering my time without reimbursement or trip loss to defend fellow pilots from company prosecution, I think have a little insight, and I resent the fact you imply it's about filling pockets deep. I certainly haven't taken anything under the table and neither have my fellow reps. I DO get tired of people talking trash when they don't have the balls or the gumption to stand up and help.

Programs such as medical assistance, peer pilot assistance, jump seat committee, hotel committee, professional standards, all depend on pilots volunteering their time to help their peers. Other pilots volunteer to help build our trips and schedules.

I've defended pilots who were in hot water for making a conservative safety decision. I think that's a valuable service to have.

SkyWest really needs to PDT & pay 70-seat rates. This is coming from a guy who's an admitted kool-aid drinker.

TA:cool:

I had a buddy leave Comair (while in training) to go to Skywest. He starts class on Monday. He said he didn't want to be based in JFK on the 70 and he really wanted to live in Chi-town. I hope he gets it.

CaptnVeggeto, upgrade isn't everything. You could go to Airmidwest or Skyway and get a fast upgrade but have a crappy QOL or not get descent pay.

I think everyone else gave pretty good advice.

Thanks all....

Still need to chew on it for awhile. I'm leaning toward the better location (for me), but the jury is still out.

Thanks again...

Did he get his drug test yet? Well, I guess Chi-dump is better than JFK. Slightly.

Hey,
SKYW= Remember to bring an extra $500 or so, in addition to paying your own way while in training for uniforms and Jepps. Go to Comair! Remember where ever you may be, the music may stop and the seat you have might be yours for a long time.

one big thing to consider;

DELTA AIR SELLS COMAIR and ASA to RAISE MUCH NEEDED CASH!
do you want to read that after joining CMR and turning down SKYW

Who the fuk is Delta Air. I have never heard of this company and I have been working for Comair for six years. I have however heard of Delta Airlines.

Another trunth teller who is clueless, just what this board wanted.

As far as Skywest or Comair, where do you want to live. Can you survive living on the west coast with their wages, can you survive living in comairs bases on their wages.
Just go where you think you might be happier, and in two years realise you made a massive mistake.

Good luck.
.

"of course if they sell us to Skywest this may all be a mute point..."

I thought it was 'moo' point. You know, as in a cow's point of view which of course nobody cares about. So, 'moo' point means so what.

Wndshr......lets say this together....I'll believe it until I see it.

Dude the best way to decide is to pray about it yourself and make your own decision. Then after you make your decision stand by it. It's good to take advice but use it as advice. You can't always go off of what people tell you. You know that!

It's simple for me....I refuse to go anywhere that doesn't pay me while I'm working for them...That's why I won't send a piece of paper at them...If your looking to still make the pilot industry one of I'll work for free then the choice is obvious...

Agreed

SKYW won't change the way they pay for training (or don't pay as is the current case) until they can no longer fill the number of seats they have in class. Our pilot group can't change that no matter how long we hold our breath or throw a tantrum. The only people that can change the current situation, are those looking for employment.

It's up to you.................

AF

But unfortunatley people would rather have an easier commute and pay for training. Will they give you the money they spend on a hotel if you stay with family a crashpad?
