Anybody know of schools that pay a set salary, versus hourly for flight instructing?

Also, how is Double Eagle in Tuscon, AZ? Anybody instruct for them?
 
Very, very few. I recall needing a post on climbto350.com about an outfit in NC that paid $1200 a month salary.

A busy CFI can do better than that.
 
A school around here pays salary plus per hour pay. A few years ago the salary was $1500/mo + $15/hr billed instruction. I believe it is now down to $500/mo + $8/hr billed. Pretty pathetic...
 
Damn, I was hoping to pick up my MEI somewhere and teach full time at some point next year.
 
Sierra academy out of livermore, CA paid $28,000 for basically Mon-Fri, with some nights, but that was 7 years ago and I'm not sure if they still have the Korean Air contract or not. Also back then there was another operator out of Napa,Ca that had a salaried op as well.

It was a long time ago, but it maybe worth looking into.

Probably the ultimate professional instructor job if you want to go to the airlines.

You will be teaching All Nippon Airways and EVA Air students private through multi.
The planes are better than most airlines with Raytheon factory maintenance.

It was $36,000, free healthcare, $5 cafeteria meals (even sushi!) back in 2001.
I'm pretty sure they have lowered the pay in the meantime...

You'll need your A-game for the written, interview and interviewflight in a Bonanza.

I did my time there as well ('01-'02), but Heitzburg was able to pump the Koreans for $30,000 per year for his boys by the time my sentence was up. Sierra lost the contract to Pan-Am and the program moved to Florida I think.

JAL trains out of Napa that pays the biggest cash (around 45-50k), but most guys there are career and I think they require an ATP. IFTA down in BFL paid fairly well, but you'll be living in hell...
 
IFTA is in a hiring frenzy; they are doubling their student load inside of the next year. I interviewed there about 3 weeks ago. Pay is 2940/month after 6 months and just under 40,000 after 12 months. A 2 year commitment is required.

The written test is straight from the CFI written including a fair amount of FOI questions. They give you the power settings and approach clearance before you arrive so you'll be ready to roll on the Baron Sim. Regarding the sim, there seems to be about .5-1 second lag between control inputs and aircraft movement--really easy to overcontrol it. I pretty much did steep turns across a localizer when I flew it. If you go in there showing them you want to be there and know what you are talking about, they will likely offer you a job.

Small FBO

I instructed at an FBO in Sun Valley, Id and they paid/still pay salary. I think it was like 1300$ a month plus I ended with I think 30$ a flight hour on top of that. Good money, but it's in a ski resort so the cost of living is outrageous. I think they hiring, look them up. Hope it helps
 
I work for St. Louis University. All of the fulltime flight instructors are salaried. Free full benefits too.
 
I flight instruct out of Flagstaff, Arizona its not salary but I would say slow months are around 1100 bucks good months around 1500. Theres obviously better to be had so check cost of living before you take a flight instruction job somewhere... definatly wont be getting rich doing this.

I believe PanAM out if Phoenix may run some of their operations under Salary pay but I know its not much.
 
Airman (when they were open) did salary their CFI's...not much though.

The jobs are out there...just gotta look HARD.

I think pretty much any collegiate 141 program will have full time flight instruction staff on salary. That's how it goes down at SLU and SIU.
 
Purdue's full-time instructors are salaried, I think mid 20s but not sure. Next to no ability to instruct multi students there though, professors who instruct (primarily to keep current) and the "lifer CFIs" (there 3+ years) get the ME work.
 
Try Sabena Airline Training Center out of Scottsdale. They are definitely salaried with health benefits. They operate late model warriors,archers,arrows, and Seneca V's. I believe they want you to have at least 200-300 hours of dual given. Give'em a call. Nice people. Also in the PHX area, there is Lufthansa Training Center out at Goodyear.....not 100% sure if they are salaried, but i would think that they are. Hope this helps. Oh BTW... most of Sabena's equipment does have air conditioning so summer wouldnt be AS bad....still sux though. Lates
 
I'm about to post our new Full Time ad here in a little while. Our monthly salary is $2400, check back in about a week for the official ad!
 
Check out ATCA (Luthansa ) Phoenix area. The last I heard the pay was at least mid forties per year. Great outfit and aircraft. Also check out Sabena, ( SATC ) they moved from Scottsdale to Falcon field in Mesa, they also pay decent and have good planes.
FYI stay away from Chandler Air Service, a real group of losers.

I missed this little gem.

ATCA is not exactly known for being a "great outfit" and many of their Bonanzas have nearly 20 THOUSAND hours on them.

There is also no multi time.

I would highly recommend staying away from these people.....if you want more details, PM me or ask ACATerry.....he used to work there and knows the scoop.
 
Interesting to see this year old thread get bumped and see how much things have changed in only a year. There are quite a few schools offering 40k+ salaries now.
 
I instruct out of KFUL and average take home for me is around 3k per month after taxes (could work more but i still have school and another side gig). Some instructors there reach 40-50 with a packed student schedule. Most of us can average a 10-12 hour work day, and we just like everyone else don't have enough instructors but plenty of students.

How is it, especially in California, that you're not making at least as much as the "packed schedule" instructors if you're taking home $3K a month?
 
Money!

At 12 months thats only 36 after taxes (i just look at the take home because thats what i see). So i guess to sorta answer your question, im guessing top cfi's make 50-60 a year here. I'm just careful about my scheduling and make sure i don't get burned out, plus i love having a personal life.
 
When I left American Flyers I was salary at 2750 a month. Took a pay cut at my first year at Eagle.
