requesting an r-nav approach

why is it that you must request an R-Nav GPS approach? I ran across this the other day where the preferred runway wind wise and length wise (IFR on field) was not being used. when we asked if we can use that particular runway the controller said yes as long as we request it....any ideas wht you must request it?

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you're requesting a non-precision approach vs. precision. I've been in the same situation.

Just my thoughts.

Maybe it has to do with Predicted RAIM and Temprature Conversion charted on the approach plate? Some approaches require a temprature conversion to shot the approach...Just my thoughts!!!

Must be something specific to that airport. Off the top of my head, I know that ABE uses an RNAV when it favors that runway. It is advertised on the ATIS and does not need to be requested. In fact, we have to request not to use it since we are not equipped for an RNAV approach.
