I understand where you are coming from, but that is part of the problem with the system. I had the same picture as you once as an FO. It wasn't until I became a Captain that I started to see why that logic is flawed. I would rather spend my time on the ground waiting for a gate than clog the system up. I do remember squeezing every last dollar out of my schedule as an FO at CHQ. 17.96 an hour, 50% deadhead, and no cx pay didn't go very far, but at least we had left over snack boxes back then to help on the food front.
There's a way to ease the congestion. Just ask ATC if you can pull it back. Only going into the biggest class B's have I had them ask to please keep it up. If they say, "Sure, own speeds" you better believe I'm not breaking .6. I thought about getting a sticker with "<.6 club" on it made lol. Makes me more, saves fuel a little too.
