I am curious if anyone has gone from flying 121 to working 121 dispatch? If so I am looking for information on the training. Was it accelerated?

none
You can take accelerated courses just about anywhere they offer the dispatch course. Accelerated courses are usually in the two week range vs. the standard 6 week course.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but an ATP is usually a pre-requisite for an accelerated course, no?

(I'm totally not current on those things, so I could be way wrong.)

nahhhh. At the cracker jack school I went to, If you told them you threw a bag or once checked a pax in, you were eligible. walter is right though.... you have to take your adx written (same as atp written) on your own before beginning the acc. class.

For the pilot inquiring... to break it down.... most dx schools are 5 weeks. The first 3 weeks is literally just studying for the atp written. That's it. The "accelerated" class starts on week 4, which starts 2 weeks of flight planning and stuff.

That said...

...the guy that had the hardest time keeping up in my class was "soon to be retiring" 747 captain who joined us on week 4 of 6.

I believe he failed his oral/practical because he started every sentence with "when we shoot the approach onto JFK in my 747". The career mainline dispatcher that was the examiner asked him to stop answering how he would do it as a pilot and start thinking like a dispatcher...and the guy couldn't.

You really do not need a course if you are a 121 pilot and trying to get your Dispatch certificate. It is all a matter of how well your skills are to pass the exam. If you are not familiar with your Dispatch office, you should just take the accelerated course. But you are not required to go to any class if you choose. And the question remains....why would you want to?

FAR Part 65.57

An applicant for an aircraft dispatcher certificate must present documentary evidence satisfactory to the Administrator that he or she has the experience prescribed in paragraph (a) of this section or has accomplished the training described in paragraph (b) of this section as follows:

(a) A total of at least 2 years experience in the 3 years before the date of application, in any one or in any combination of the following areas:

(1) In military aircraft operations, as a --

(i) Pilot;

(ii) Flight navigator; or

(iii) Meteorologist.

(2) In aircraft operations conducted under part 121 of this chapter as --

(i) An assistant in dispatching air carrier aircraft, under the direct supervision of a dispatcher certificated under this subpart;

(ii) A pilot;

(iii) A flight engineer; or

(iv) A meteorologist.

(3) In aircraft operations as --

(i) An Air Traffic Controller; or

(ii) A Flight Service Specialist.

(4) In aircraft operations, performing other duties that the Administrator finds provide equivalent experience.

(b) A statement of graduation issued or revalidated in accordance with §65.70(b) of this part, showing that the person has successfully completed an approved aircraft dispatcher course.

shooter... although I'm not disagreeing with your post.... i'm just sayin most schools are so hard up for more students and rakin in the cash they'll take any student (an accelerated one too at that if the ultimatum is stated that the accelerated student doesn't want to do the full 5 weeks.)

True dat. I think the majority of the Country is hurting for cash right now.

I was just letting him know that if he does not want to take a class (full or accelerated) and just take the exam that he can. Most of us fall under letter (b) in regard to how we became qualified to take the exam because we wanted to Dispatch. He would fall under (a) because he already is a 121 pilot and to now wants to be a Dispatcher. That is not very common.

Hell...if I can't be in Texas...I'd rather be here at work. I just killed off some turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, 2 pieces of pie, and so on and so forth...

The forks have been with me since about 8 this morning...hahaha!

First Thanksgiving I ever missed. I don't think a turkey has ever cast a shadow in this country. I actually had the day off too, dammit. That's a first.

Oh, even if the holiday was celebrated , ham is definitely NOT on the menu, if you catch my drift.

Some of the British guys on pprune call this place "Knoteetingham", get it? Clever, eh?

Are you a commuter or is Texas where the family resides?

EDIT: With all of that in your belly, I am surprised you are still awake? ;)

Texas is were my family is (parents, grandparents, old friends, etc.). I go back there every 2 weeks or so...sometimes more, sometimes less.

I got off at 1500 SGU time...was asleep by 1515...just awoke for round 2.
