Pinnacle and Eagle guys and their "nice strobe" comments

only incl. the two airlines that said them just to get everyone's attention b/c I feel it's important..nothing to do with particular pilot groups, as there's jacka$$ pilots at every airline that would do this.

One time it happened when crossing a runway to take another, the other when I got them on 50 ft early cuz it was 6am in Moline, IL and I didn't think anyone'd be behind me.... at 6am in Moline, Illinois.

Look, when a plane's taking the active, or CROSSING AN ACTIVE RWY, even if the guy gets them on early and strobes are bright as hell, bite your frickin' lip. It's not the time to razz a guy when he's getting ready to roll down a rwy. Even trying to blow it off, it's distracting....As professional as Mesa sharing hotel rooms on short high speeds. Grow the hell up.

Hope everyone else agrees...
 
Nice strobes. And guess who that was at MLI????
 
When you are at a busy airport it has always been the common courtesy to delay turning on your strobes to keep from blinding everyone behind you, but then again that is a little old school and your probably from the new school era
 
That's not what they taught us at Riddle! Master on, strobes on. Navigating a complex aircraft around the airport is a dicey proposition on the best of days, you want everything operating in your favor! Safety first, dude!

Next time you put your feet in your aircraft look down and see where they are. Are they at Riddle? ............No!

If you're crossing an active runway at night with someone in position and hold, then MAYBE turn your strobes on. But if nobody's on that runway, or on final to that runway, what's the point.

I agree. They should save their bitching for when you are nose-to-nose with a Delta guy and they leave their taxi light on right in your face.

My airline it is strobes on for Position and Hold or when crossing a runway (closed or active). Makes your more visible for anyone on final.

The Skywest Metroliner that got slammed into by the US Airways 737in LAX in 1991 comes to mind. I believe in the investigation they did some tests with different light configurations to see what would be visible from a couple mile final.

My airline "mandates" strobes for both occasions.

None of which will make you particularly visible to an aircraft about to land on top of you. Both my previous operator and my current one specify strobes be turned on as you're cleared into position, and the landing lights are to come on once takeoff clearance is received.

But if nobody's on that runway, or on final to that runway, what's the point.

SKW5569, N683AV, had been cleared to rwy 24L, at intersection 45, to position and hold. The local controller, because of her preoccupation with another airplane, forgot she had placed SKW5569 on the runway and subsequently cleared USA1493, N388US, for landing. After the collision, the two airplanes slid off the runway into an unoccupied fire station.
All 12 in the Skywest airplane were killed as it was crushed by the 737, as were 21 people on the USAir jet.

That's "the point."

This is the new guidance that most, if not all POI are mandating from their carriers. Essentially, when crossing a runway everything is on. Position and hold, everything except landing lights. Of course you are expected to remain a pilot and consider the aircraft in your proximity for operating strobes, landing lights, etc.

If it was a Pinnacle airplane, then if could have been me that b!tched at you, and I stand by it. Don't blind people with your damn strobe lights. There's a reason that Airbuses have automatic strobes that only come on with weight off wheels.

There's a reason the strobe light has a switch in the cockpit. I know Airbus doesn't believe in pilots thinking for themselves, but that doesn't mean they're right.

If I'm on a runway, my strobes are going to be on for my safety and my passengers'. Sorry if it upsets you.

If it has nothing to do with the individual pilot groups then why are you calling them out by pilot group?

I'm not the one with my panties in a wad. I'm following safe operating practice and my company's FOM by doing what I do. If you want to "bitch at me" on the radio, that's your prerogative, but it'll make you sound like an unprofessional whiner to everyone on the frequency.

You pretty much know when the guy is goign to turn on his(or her) strobes. Avert your eyes. No one says you have to stare directly at the damn things.
