If you haven't been in a cave this week, you all know about the devastation in Haiti. We all get preoccupied over our own little world of contract issues or how our friends at "Screw Scheduling" treat us, but in the grand scheme of things, our issues are insignificant when compared to people who don't even know where to find clean water or know when their next meal will be.

So here's the deal. Take 5 minutes (or less) to donate one day's pay to the cause. I donated the equivalent of 4 hours and used the American Red Cross website (www.redcross.org). If you want other options, Catholic Charities already has a presence there, Salvation Army and many other organizations are up and running too. Just be careful giving to an organization you don't know since the crooks are already making fake websites. If all else fails, use the media websites (Foxnews, NBC, etc.) for a list of charities.

One day's pay. That's less than a monthly bar bill for some of you guys. If that's too much then donate at least one hour. And then count your blessings that we live in this great country.

USA Unicef will cover all admin costs. All of your donation goes directly to those in need.

I worked relief in Haiti before. Virtually all of the supplies we moved and needed to deliver were stolen or held ransom by high ranking government officials or gunmen.

MOST of the goods were stolen at gunpoint by the same people after the 1000% duties were paid on the relief supplies. Haiti is the way it is for a reason.

I would be very hesitant to give money to any charities claiming they are delivering supplies in Haiti. Experience says otherwise.

Just my two cents worth. If a foreign military power isn't DIRECTLY involved in the forced distribution of goods, all you are doing is making a few people very wealthy through profiteering.

While that will probably happen next month, or next week, I would think that there's too much worldwide attention focused on this for it to happen widescale at the present time.

spelling </sigh>

Let me get this straight, you think PILOTS are going to donate money! That's funny. But I sent some to the Red Cross. The fear that it may not reach people is real down there, but just because the house is on fire and all we have are buckets, doesn't mean we shouldn't try to put it out.

I'm a realist, a lot of cash will get lost, but we need to at least try before dismissing it out of hand.

I donated more than my fair share to the $100 million Obama is sending down there. $43,000 in income taxes last year. That was a more than a couple day's pay...more like a couple month's. The corruption down there is staggering too. We've been sending millions every year too, not just now, and much of it it gets squandered to corrupt government officials and gangs. Even altruistic Bill Clinton had some sort of corrupt scam going with a telephone company and Haiti in the past.

With all the United Staes government help going down there, I think we all already donated a lot.

Done. Just checked my paystub. Taxes were again taken out to support the US government in their efforts to provide relief. The US military is the only way to go for disasters like this.

EXACTLY! And just remember we have to borrow the money our government so generously sends. Why not just get the chinese to just send them a check and cut out the middle man (us).

Rush,

While agree that there will be scams and I am hesitant to give as well, we have to assume that what we give will help on a disaster of this magnitude. I think we can all give 5 bucks for Christ's sake. Might keep someone alive, might not.........

Aren't there enough problems with poverty in our own country that we should take care of first?

Besides, I do not feel bad for most of Haiti. I do feel bad for and will help anyway that I can for the Christian people of Haiti. I may be wrong, but I thought that Haiti was mostly a voo-doo country. What do they expect when they turn their backs on God. For that I do not feel bad.

Like I said, if there is a donation fund for Christians of Haiti I will gladly give.

Like the one guy said, the country is how it is for a reason. Look at most non-Christian countries, they are mostly all in ruins and very third worldish.

Haiti's official religion is roman catholic with most people practicing. I recall your prophet Jesus saying "love thy neighbor"...

Oh, for the record, I have an American friend that spent 7 hours in the rubble only to be dug out by hand by her husband and about 30 good hearted haitians. She was there to run a mission that improved the lives of the locals and spread the word of your "savior". These are good people that are in a bad situation, apparently you forgot that your religion teaches compassion. You are a disgrace.

Well said. Unfortunately, the "If you're not a Christian, then FU" mentality is all to common.

Compassion.com is a reputable Christian organization that you can donate to . Remember, love begins with God but does not end with just Christians.

You so-called conservatives crack me up. You pay lip service to independence and self-sufficiency outside of government. Yet, when it comes to putting your money where your mouth is, you choose to depend on the government. It's all about the money, isn't it?

I'm tired of the right wing trying to opportunistically politicize this disaster. The bottom line is that people are in dire need of help.

Lead, follow or get the f---- out of the way. In other words, set aside your shallow politics and put up or shut up.

Here is a list of charities and their efficiency rating (i.e. percentage of funds that go directly to aid vs administrative/overhead costs.) according to Forbes.

Forbes

You'll see that the Red Cross is at 80%....which is actually much improved over their former 40 something percent rating. However, my money went to Direct Relief International with a 100% efficiency rating.

Before you get too upset at all Christians because of what SFR said, I think he is just flaming. He is sort of playing the Stephen Colbert here. I don't believe any honest follower of Jesus Christ would say the things he said in such a calloused manner or use that for an excuse to not give to people so needy right now.

Also, it is a rare Christian who will list there current position as "doggy style." So, I am kind of getting the impression he is just saying what he thinks a Christian would say to get a rise out of everyone or he is the kind of pilot (Christian) who says "I am to the book" (bible) and then proceeds to disregard anything he finds inconvenient.

Unlike predominantly Christian countries like... Rwanda? and ...Haiti?

Yes we have a lot of problems here in the United States. But how long do you think it will take before the first boats are on the Florida coast with refugees? Our economy can't bare that. It is in the best interest of the United States to help Haiti rebuild. Without the aide from the US and the other nations, boat loads of Haitian refugees would be on the Florida coast within three weeks.

I pray to God we never experience that type of mass devestation here in the United States. It is times like these we see the best in the American people. No matter what your political or religous association, humanity hopefully prevails.

What is wrong with this country? I don't think that it is F'D at all. The economy may be hurting, but it is people like me that pay my bills that keep it going.

I don't remember Bush telling people to default on credit and send the economy into a spiral.

I am actually a practicing Christian. I am not perfect by any means but I try to work at it. If Haiti is 90% Christian then I stand corrected and withdraw my first post. I assumed that it was a voo-doo culture.

We have.....hurricanes, earthquakes, fires...you name it... we have had it worse cummulatively

>>>>You pay lip service to independence and self-sufficiency outside of government. Yet, when it comes to putting your money where your mouth is, you choose to depend on the government. It's all about the money, isn't it?<<<

I had no choice in the matter. The government takes a portion of my paycheck and I can't do anything about it. They take so much (and then waste so much of it) that it's rare that I let much else of my money go anywhere else other than providing for me and my familiy. The American people via the American government and military has given and is giving PLENTY, especially when you consider the millions over the years dumped in that rathole. Corruption and lawlessness has always reigned and it's prevented good, self-sufficient capitilism from ever taking hold. You know - teach a guy to fish instead of giving him fish and all that. Due to the earthquake, those people need special help right now and they are getting it as best as can be accomplished. The U.S. government is GIVING Haiti a LOT of help and I, through my taxes, already contributed plenty. The American government's generosity and help represents and IS my generosity and help. I gave at tax time and am done till I pay my taxes again in a couple of months.

Now, while the opportunity presents itself, the U.S. needs to get a decent government set-up there, get companies to put a few factories down there to create decent jobs, (you and the unions here would scream though) and get some good law enforcement there to shut down the gangs and corruption. It'll never happen though and Haiti will go back to being the lost, chaotic, pathetic place it's been ever since they got their independence 200 years ago and their hand will always be out again again for my money via the U.S. government and nothing changes for the better because the leaders of Haiti and their lieutenants never allow it because they're more interested in enriching themselves and paying off gangs to do their dirty work.

I'm sure the infants, kids and adults are down there right now doing their "voo-doo dance" all the while smelling bodies decaying & worshiping Satan. Fox News Alert.......human beings might be under the rubble? They might actually feel sadness and pain and...... get this....they might be atheists, christians, jews, islamic, buddhists, etc.

You might want to go crawl back into the hole from which you came.....practicing christian my a$#! With regard to your A1 credit report, it's not as soft as Charmin....but I recommend giving it a try.
