Does it strike any of you as odd that the majority of posts on this thread are done by guys who aren't airline pilots?

Cockpit JS's are not as easy to get as they were prior to 9/11.

"it's there in case a flight is sold out" is only true if you're jumping on your own carrier or a codeshare (IE, CMR pilots like 'jarhead's' son can get the JS on a DL, CMR, ASA, or CHQ flight (operated as a DLX flight only), but he can't get it on a Southwest or US Air flight).

The TSA is currently mulling over the idea that members of the ATA (basically, if your company doesn't operate a mainline aircraft like a 737 or larger, you are not a member) can get the cockpit JS on other ATA members flights. That would allow a Delta guy to get the cockpit JS on a FedEx flight, but not allow a American Eagle guy to get the Jumpseat on a Delta flight.

Hopefully, this will go through. In the mean time, JS privileges go from very liberal (any seat on a JetBlue flight but the cockpit JS is open to an airline pilot, including any empty FA seats - you know, the ones that fold down off the wall) to very conservative (American Airlines only allows 2 non-American or 'American Express' type pilots on any of their flights, even if the plane is empty. A carrier like CHQ, who normally has a policy of any open seat is a jumpseat has to abide by the '2 JS'ers only' rule when they operate an AA flight, but not a Delta flight).

Typhoon is right. Pilots have fought very hard for the ability to commute to work (and have given concessions for this right), and to spread the idea that all pilots just sit up in first class eating the fancy stuff and being waited on hand and foot by the FA's while the paying passengers suffer in the back like cattle chomping on peanuts is misleading. We don't just show up at the airport, flash a badge, and walk right through security and sit down in first class. We miss connections and don't show up for work when flights are oversold, we have to research which flights are at what capacity the day before we travel to ensure we have a chance to get a seat, we have to enlist our entire family to call the Jumpseat hotline at a certain hour to ensure that we get the cockpit JS, and that's when we're senior enough to keep it!

The opportunity to JS is a privilege that we have negotiated for. It's not always easy, it's not always free, and it's often a pain in the butt.

Go to the thread 'Cockpit JS's restored' in the major's forum for details on the efforts pilots are making to get access to the cockpit JS again.

Hey Boo,
I sure will defer to you about post 9-11 on the JS. Although my son(a Comair pilot) has jump seated in the cockpit of NWA jets, it may have been prior to 9-11. He now never needs to try that, as the loads are lower than before 9-11, and the flights he takes for visits here in MSP from CVG are about 8 a day each was with DAL and CMR. He is senior enough now, and he knows there is only one CMR pilot who commutes to CVG from MSP that could bump him, and if that would ever happen, he'd have the JS on the next flight.

How's this for a reply:

You're a f----ing Moron.

I now place you on my ignore list forever. I don't do sociopaths

News Flash... A little birdie told me "Dieterly" goes by "ChickHauler" on PPRuNe.com ... AND that he isn't what he represents himself to be (i.e. 152 to 747)... LOL! :p

Who would have EVER guessed?

Mr_Concorde, is THAT you? ;)

C'Mon you little rascal, fess up! :p

Jarhead,

I sure hope the loads on DAL aren't as bad as you make them out to be. Try non-reving on US Air.. Just about everything is full these days over here.

What I referred to as low load factors, may just be an anomaly in the route that 95% of my CMR/DAL flying takes place on. MSP to CVG and back. I know last summer I non rev'd from MSP to CVG, and then changed flights to continue on to MHT. That leg was very full, but I made it. The return trip on a DAL mad dog was also very full, and the gate agent put me up in first class, where there was room.

I know the airlines have adjusted capacity by parking airplanes, and consequently furloughing pilots. So I imagine most routes have higher loads than I am seeing in the 8 flights in and out of MSP on DAL and CMR. Might be due to NWA has their main hub and HQ in MSP, and NWA owns MSP! I am taking a trip next weekend, and the trip to CVG on a CMR CL-700 has 30 empty seats as of this day on that 70 seater, and the trip back on a DAL 737-800 has over 60 unsold seats as of today.

US Air has minimal presence in MSP (but some), But NWA dominates MSP.....Nothing but red tails as far as the eye can see. I am sure US Air has that same dominance in some of the eastern hubs.....like PIT. They seem to own that airport. Flew from PIT to ROA once on US Air, and it was a sold out flight. (before 9-11)

Does anyone remember that flame-a-nator H8U? It sounds to me like he may have graduated Junior High and reincarnated as Dieterly. Still not too bright but at least he can form complete sentences and use the quote button. His avatar says it all....LOOOOOOSER!

I hauled checks for a while. Come to think of it, I hauled chicks too! Little yellow fuzzy things that go "cheep, cheep". They rode up in the front of the Navajo with me. They were so cute!:D :D :D :D

Jarhead:

I paid $165 per year to have pass priveleges for my myself, wife and parents. That was for coach travel only. First class upgrades required an additional surcharge. International flights required the payment of taxes/departure fees. My brother works for American, not his fault, he was Air Cal. He has always paid a fee for each segment based on class of service and distance. At United up until their last contract I believe the pilots paid a fee based on mileage.

I'm glad you get to fly for free, but I never have as a non-rev.

Jarhead, I'd count your blessings. You are perhaps the only non-rever I know who always flys free in 1st on empty flights. I guess some guys get all the luck. I know DL mainline guys who are near retirement on the 777 who don't get 1/2 the seats you seem to! Load factors are around the high 70's low 80's on most of the flights I see (that essentially means full to those of you who who don't live and die by load factors to get to work). I do think it has alot to do with the route you fly, but still, very abnormal.

Dietery, I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. It's becoming an increasingly hard sell though.

Typhoon,
Your experience with paying a fee based on class of service and distance, sounds very much like the "buddy pass" situation at CMR. My brother got one of those buddy passes from his uncle to fly out and see him to transact some business. The "pass" cost my son $49 and some change for the round trip. When I asked my son about that price for his uncle's ticket, he told me the cost was based on some sort of formula, with distance being one of the variables.

I am a little vauge on the details, as I never really needed to know about the "buddy pass" situation. Mabe it was a different situation altogether, but I do know that through his nephew, my brother did the $49 trip MSP/CVG/MSP
