Well, folks, I realize this isn't exactly a "Major Airline" subject, but I think it will be of interest to many of us who entered this industry in the 1990's during the bad ol' PFT days.

Well, the worst offender in the race to the bottom, as we all know, is Gulfstream Int'l Airlines, a ragtag B1900 operator which, instead of interviewing and hiring professional First Officers, came up instead with a novel idea- to actually charge inexperienced pilots $20,000. in exchange for the dubious privilege of playing First Officer for 250 hours. Truly a despicable practice.

Well, it looks like the fat lady is about to sing. GIA will no longer be the corn in Continental's poop any longer:

Good news. Didn't I read that a few GI graduates made their way to AirTran after accruing the necessary hours? I thought I saw a picture of an FO dude on the 717 who had run through that program (perhaps from a link to the GI website - i.e., "successful" graduates)...

Gulfstream isn't the only one from that time frame that was PFT. Don't forget Comair and Express (Pinnacle now).....

Yes, there is a strata of Gulfstream pilots on our senority list. Oh how I miss the B-1900 war stories.........

True, but at Gulfstream you actually paid for the privilege to yank gear for 250 hours, and then were let go to make room for the next sucker.... Orwell said some pigs are more equal than others: what's a good flip on that?

I once saw a gulfstream FO whose ID badge said "No Jumpseat". I asked what that was about and he explained that in order to jumpseat you must be employed by a 121 carrier, and he wasn't an employee, he was a customer...

AirTran PFT

YGBFKM . . . . . I've been on this board since about 1996 and have been one of the loudest voices against the practice of PFT, so not only "no", but "HELL NO!".

Sheesh!

Ok- this was moved to the wrong spot. How is this a GA discussion?

Why didn't you re-apply after AirTran reopened the doors? Someone with your experience would have been a great asset and you would have been very senior and a rich man by now. Sure beats flying drive shafts down to Guadalajara in the middle of the night.

I was getting too old and that age 60 thing would have killed me in retirement. At JUS I could keep working a lot longer.

Got it all wrong

Yep. Working indefinately behind a desk like the management lapdog that you are.
Very little time at the desk. Lots in the airplane, classroom, fun stuff.

And online in an anonymous chatboard trying to convince pilots they are only worth what your company pays....

?????????

I have never said that, I have said that pilots are entitled to whatever the market will pay them. Some pay their dues in the on-demand business, remember part of your sacrifice speech? I have seen too many pilots leave JUS to places like AAL, DAL, NJ, FedEx, UPS, even SWA without a college degree. Mostly they are thankful for the opportunity to get the resume fluff for the next job and many stay in touch with me after leaving to talk about the good ole days. Many elect to stay because them enjoy 6 figure + incomes and they could never catch up with their earnings if they left JUS. BTW anonymous? everyone knows who I am, where I work, and how to get ahold of me.

So flight time is part of the compensation package?

And when your pilots are good and experienced and qualified- pay goes up?

Again all wrong, it is a place you come to get your next job. If you don't get your next job, you end up hanging around moving up the pay scale. You know 12th Ca's make more than 2nd yr F/O's. Many people are not as cool as you and don't get chances to go to SWA, so they are stuck in a bottom feeder ecking by on their miserly $100K/yr. Funny thing it is a place you come back to when the next job didn't work out. BTW 1st yr DA-20 F/O pay is $36K/yr. Well above anyone else in this sector, almost double what one gets for a SJS job.
