I think this countrys govt sucks. Now dont get me wrong, I was born and raised on US soil. but from what im seeing now-a-days with the economy and foreign policy, Iraq... and dont get me started on Social Security(which by the way, by the time Im 65, or 66, there will be no more money left). Why are we in Iraq anyway? Could it be........oil??? and did Bush ever get his $$$ billion dollar budget he wanted for more military spending?? GEEEEEEEz, what about free heathcare and education. Look at Holland, and Swiss, Belgium, and some other countrys in North Europe who have the highest GDP per person.

I don't count on the government retirement system. You shouldn't either, becasue the politicians will plunder it into bankruptcy and the liberal/leftists won't allow it to be invested and controlled by individuals.

what's this swill you lefties keep pushing about Europe. They also have gasoline for $5/gallon, avgas for $10/gal or more. don't allow a fraction of the freedom for GA if at all. don't have land and homes that the average person can afford anywhere near as nice as in the US. don't have medical centers where the rest of the world travels to them for leading edge treatment (as we do here).

Most Part of the reason they have higher GDP (if even true) is because they don't allow millions of illegal aliens into their country from 3rd world countries.

Why don't you just go ahead and go on over to Belgium, Holland, Switzerland (not Swiss)... Oh - they control their borders and won't let you immigrate?! Hmmm....

Easy, Timebuilder. I think Viva's point is that the 1950's were not exactly an episode of Leave it to Beaver for everybody. Rape, murder, incest, crooked businessmen, crooked politicians, bigotry...all these things existed before 1970. The difference is that CNN, Fox News, etc. didn't.

Life has NEVER been an episode of Leave it to Beaver. To try and judge a decade of real life by one TV show is something that someone would do if they had not lived that decade. I DID live that decade.

Life in the 50's in Mississippi was often difficult, but it was also a stable, two parent, church attending, and school studying life.

Let's compare my life as it would be if I was a black woman in the 50's to being a black woman in the 2000's. I'll take the 50's, hands down.

People have always suffered the ills listed in the above quote. The difference is that these things have become a part of acceptable behavior, and sometimes even fashionable.

In the 50's, there was never a popular media support for premarital sex, dressing children (age 10 or 11) as young hookers, being members of a gang, shooting each other or shooting police, placing your personal needs for gratification ahead of the needs of your family, or support for same sex "relationships". Communities were solid and stable. Most prison inmates were white, becuase whites were the most numerous and therefore were the source of most crime, which was far lower in incidence than today. There were millions of guns, and not one of us dreamed of bringing one to school. NO young girl came to school and shot people, and there was no "I don't like Mondays" song writen about the experience.

I could talk for days about the changes in society, and why we are truly Slouching Toward Gomorrah.

But I also recognize that this would largely fall on deaf ears.

Don't forget, Timebuilder, that your elders were making the same complaints back then that you're making now. As outraged as people are today by, say, Christina Aguilera, it's my understanding that foks were even more shocked by Elvis Presley's hips. Or the Beatles' hair. (My old high school band director, a retired artillery Colonel, is still convinced that the downfall of American society began when John, Paul, Gorge, and Ringo arrived.)

You're right about one thing, though. Black pepole were not being lynched left-and-right in 1950's Mississippi...no more than every high school today has guns in it. No more than airline pilots are always flying drunk. The sensational headline does not necessarily indicate a national trend.

I can't say whether all the ills we've mentioned were fashionable in the Fifties, but talking about them openly certainly wasn't!

Complaints? Yes, they had complaints. The SAME complaints? No.

For instance, we had seen long hair before; the powdered wigs of the founders, or artists renderings of their idea of Jesus' appearance.

This is a far cry from bizarre facial piercings and tattoos.

They were talked about, but in controlled private environments. People had a sense of stigma and shame, which are powerful deterrants used by society to guide behavior. We have started to lose our sense of these inhibitors, and the inhibitions.

A 13 year old should be ashamed to be pregnant. Now, she has her own day care center and support group. In the 50's, she had an aunt in another town, and she was 16, not 13 or 12.

When I say "fashionable", I mean that these things are openly discussed as being "neutral" events and conditions, without stigma or negative inferrance. They are shown in entertainment at all times of the day. A ten year old girl is only a few clicks between Sponge Bob and a Hip Hop video with semi clothed actors bumping and grinding in simulated sex acts. If she hears music, she will hear shouting and screaming that passes now for singing. This gives impressionable children the idea that these events are rational choices and equivalent lifestyles, and that this is the new standard for leisure viewing by all ages.

By repeated exposure, children are being conditioned to poor choices and even outright evil, just like the Muslim children in a terrorist training program.

In this case, it is our frog who has been imperceptibly cooked by slowly raising the temperature of his comfortable water.

The answer to that question is the subject of Slouching Toward Gomorrah.

The most important reason that they have come into being is parents who refuse to parent. This has several aspects.


1) The fracture of the family. Parents don't want to be the "heavy", so divorced parents leave the parenting to.....well, no one. It usually falls to the ultra-liberal public school, guided by the heads of the NEA and APA think tanks. So, essentially an entire generation of 25 year olds have never known a classroom where most of the class has both original parents in the home.

2) Discipline. Parents are afraid to discipline their children. I'm not suggesting that anyone should beat their children raw, but a good spanking has gone a long way to impart the seriousness of many ideas to a young mind. We don't need further study to see what becomes of an undisciplined child who has time outs that are enforced video game breaks in his room, well equipped with computer and cell phone. You end up with a snot nosed kid who knows that he could have his parents arrested with one academy award performance in the school office, with reports involving sex abuse to add fuel to the fire.

3) Exploitation. Everyone is willing to sell as many revealing fashions, condoms, birth control pills, plastic surgery sessions, suggestive videos, R rated movies and anything else they can too their eager consumers. Then they start working on those who are OVER 12.

Essentially, this trend is a result of an abdication of responsibility on the part of parents in particular and society in general. Schools have passed on the secondary role of imparting the traditional values of society in favor of becoming a leading edge liberal engine of change straight out of the hippie movement. Too active in class? Medicate the students. Are they horny? Teach them how to have more satisfying sex, never mind they are still in puberty. Can't answer a math question? Let them approximate the answer. Can''t speak english? Guarantee they won't learn it by teaching in a language that they speak, but have never mastered. Don't be concerned with what they know, instead concentrate on how they feel.

What is the teen's part in this? They know that they are crossing boundaries and dopping out. They are making choices every day, choices that are serving their need for instant gratification because they see that they are going largely unchallenged. In other words, they are taking the easy way out.

As a young father, this should be a focus for many of you. Pay attention.

Excuse me while I duck under that huge brush you're painting with, Timebuilder, but as a 25 year old in the age group you speak of, my educational experience was very different than what you describe above. I don't necessarily disagree with the point you're trying to make, but by making these broad generalizations, you're effectively brushing aside anything and everything I've worked hard to become. I'm proud of the work I've done, and I'll put it up against anyone brought up in the 50's.

In all seriousness, your comment is racist at its core, and you should be ashamed for posing this situation, since it reveals that you think that being a black woman in the 1950's south is a bad thing, where one would somehow suffer for the experience.

You really need to sit down with some African Americans who lived through that era. Your comments show a shocking amount of ignorance of what the African American experience was like in the 50's. Racism was an institutionalized practice. Remember the "whites only" signs? Our courts looked the other way as innocent Americans were lynched or raped. Last month I spent some time with an older African American gentleman who served our country as a USAF mechanic. After he got out of the Air Force he wanted to go to work for the airlines. To his disappointment he found that the unions did not allow blacks into their ranks. It's also interesting to note that during a period of time when the airlines were subsidizing training for any white man with a PP cert, African American pilots who served in WW2 were denied the opportunity to apply for a job as a pilot in spite of their combat flying experience and ratings.
This is not a part of our history to be proud of. To ingore it and pretend it didn't happen is an insult to the memory of many fine Americans. I can assure you that you would not be the same person you are today had you experienced life as a black person in Tupelo during the 50's.

It was the "Baby Boomers" that were controlling Hollywood and Madison Avenue during the Fifties, Sixties, and Seventies. They brought us miniskirts, bikinis, recreational drugs, "smoking-is-cool," Deep Throat, fast food, Richard Nixon, "latchkey kids," etc. The Boomers created the world "Generation X" formed its earliest ideas in. So if the X'ers and "Millenials" have gone astray, whose fault is it? Bill Clinton? (I'll bet you Bill's a lot closer to your age than he is to mine, T.B.!)

If the children of the Fifties were so teriffic, why didn't they make a better world than this?
