We taxied out of SFO that morning it happend(previous late night)and asked ground what happend. Appearantly it had something to do with the hydaulics overnight. They made it seem like it was the mechanics fault. From what I hear that was the only 747 painted in the new colors.

PR Newswire
Statement From United Airlines
08.16.05, 2:21 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- While undergoing repairs at our San Francisco maintenance facility, a Boeing 747 aircraft was inadvertently damaged when its gear retracted, causing the tail to rest on the ground.

Aircraft maintenance technicians were in the process of troubleshooting a hydraulic issue at United's maintenance hangar. The hydraulic issue caused the plane to be returned to the airport on Monday. The flight was headed for Tokyo and returned safely to San Francisco.

We are in the process of inspecting the damage and the cause of the incident.

No one was injured, and repair work will begin on the aircraft immediately.

Customers have been accommodated on another aircraft, and the flight is expected to leave for Tokyo at about 11:30 a.m. local time today.

United regrets any inconvenience to our passengers.

I'm sure there's quite a bit of mourning going on over at Airliners.net.

By the looks of the picutre, it seems that the body gear retracted and the wing gear stayed extended.
