is worldwide demand causing this sustained increase?

read somewhere it was...........demand shooting up due to third world and china buying more cars, big ticket items. that said, the fed should impose a surcharge as a tax and pass it back to the airlines, so they( the airlines) quit stabbing each other. tickets should all go up $"56" per segment for the next quarter.

tell me why increasing revenues will not work for all the problems that persist.

First of all....pass the brewski. Second, I am not necessarily against drilling there. We just need to pull our collective heads out of our collective a$$es and conserve a little first, so it's not all for nothing. Examples: The average MPG of cars/trucks in the U.S. has not increased in over ten years. The EPA did a study that basically said if the average MPG of vehicles in the U.S. went up just 3-4 MPG, it would essentially make the entire middle east obsolete in terms of oil. If we were doing all of that and still needed it, then sure-drill away. And no I'm not "like one of those peeps" that dumps paint on people's coats. People should be able to drive what they want, it is the USA after all. They should also know the sometimes global consequences of doing so....and they should STFU when gas hits $3 a gallon! Now hit me up with another cold one!

I'd buy you a beer for that post. Good stuff. The senator from NM who is the chairman of energy and natural resources commitee seems to be on board with us. We need to drill, and conserve as much as possible. Public transportation is a good way to conserve as well as hybrids and R&D for alternative fuels. Increased gas tax, which i saw on here earlier is a great start. Penalize the abusers and give a bigger tax break to the people who choose to conserve. Nucleur,hydroelectirc,windpower,more....more....more, enough fossil fuels for power. Not only are we using scarce resources, but we are shortening our life span due to carbon an sulfuric emmissions. Turn your heaters off when you leave, or put a shirt on and use it less. Design houses in n. hemisphere with windows facing south, and coniferous trees north side, decidous south. Conserve energy whenever you can, it makes a difference. More virtual offices and HOV lanes for carpoolers. So much can be done, we have only scratched the surface. This county/world is in for a rude awekening the next two decades and the punk f.u.c.k towel heads are the only ones benefitting. Too many lobbyists in Washington helping the rich get richer. Why don't we decrease the supply of wheat/grain/corn, and see how they like eating thier llamas, camels, and sand.

Off the soapbox......sorry.

DRILL!!!! 6 months worth of oil is wrong. There's a crapload more up there just waiting to be found. I do, however, agree with the mindset that we need to explore all alternatives. Conservation, exploration for new oil sources and R & D for alternative fuels are some good areas to start. We need to quit supporting the human debris over in the middle east. Let's be open to all options, other than raising taxes. Raising taxes is not the answer to every problem! Some of you need to be a little more creative. I'm only in favor of higher taxes for neanderthals...

The oil from ANWR while not something that is going to supply all our needs, is still a significant sources. I have yet to comprehend how the Democrats do not want us drilling anywhere unless it will take care of all of our needs. If we treated every possible exploration like that, we would have zero wells in the US. Whats next, no new power plants unless that plant will supply power for the whole US?

Look at the north slope drilling, that turned out fine. Does anyone want us to turn off those wellheads because those dont supply all of our need?

I never thought I'd say this, but is re-regulation in our future?
That is very hard for a conservative republican to say.

Airlines are killing each other and the only people losing are the employees. He11, usair replaced their timeclock with an ATM machine. You now have to pay to go work there, practically. They are still in major trouble.

Say good bye to pensions AMR/DAL. That is next.

Exactly!

Ignorance is the only reason Nuclear power isn't everywhere. Maybe we should spend some dollars educating people on the benefits of nucleur power.

Am I turning into a Democrat......WTF?

no, Democrats run away from nuclear power like a Frenchie runs away from a bath.

I am all for nuclear power, and its far cleaner than coal plants. The waste disposal problems are all political..

I know, just the thought of spending gov't money and federal gov't intervention scared the heck out of me. I can't believe I would support that, but in this case it is justified. I spend about $12.00 a month in Gas. Yup. NO BS. Honda civic and conserve. I pull into a car wash, see a guy waxing his hummer that probably makes less than me and certainly has much less a portfolio, he probably spends 12 bucks a day for fuel. Ask GEn X and your kids, they know more about conservation than baby boomers, that is for sure. Anyway, carry on.

Also, if we stopped driving everywhere, maybe we wouldn't be so God dam fat.

This is the fattest fking country I have evey seen. Now, I see why the gay population has skyrocked, too many fat chicks. Whatever. I'm 6'0" weigh 192 for what it is worth. Ok, 5'11". I can run a 4.85 40 and bench 275. I am disgusted with what I see walking around in airport, passengers, pilots agents whatever. This country needs to wake up, stop being arrogant, everybody else is catching up to us whopper eatin' fools. Whatever!

There are a lot of things you can to do lower your gas usage, you can probably save several dollars a month at least just by having your tires at the right pressure, and having a clean air filter, or not having 100 lbs of crap in your car.

I used to have a Nissan Pathfinder that got me 16 mpg, city or highway, and now I have a 94 honda accord that gets me 35 highway, and about 30 city, so I dont even spend any more on gas now. how many people ride bikes or walk anywhere now? You would think people are allergic to doing that.

People seem to be afraid of conservation these days. Look at what our grandparents were willing to do during WW2, they had rationing for food and gas, carpooling, victory gardens, recycling scrap, and people today whine and moan at the slightest inconvienence, even though we are in a battle with terrorists who would love to kill us all

But hey, people need to have a large 4 wheel drive truck which never leaves pavement, to look cool, or a SUV they dont need, to keep up with the other wives...

Give this man a cigar. When are we going to not only realize but pursue alternative fuels? This will be the biggest disappointment future generations have of us.

Future generations are not going to understand why we are wasting so much oil right now.

What alternative fuels? Hydrogen? The only source of free hydrogen, that you don't have to put more energy into then you get out, is petroleum (hydrocarbons).

I totally support increasing CAFE standards and increasing tax on auto fuel with the goal of increasing the efficiency with which we use petroleum. I don't feel this way because I'm an eco-tree hugger. I simply see that petroleum is essential to our way of life, there is a limited amount of it, and there is currently no replacement in sight.

That oil up in Alaska is like money in the bank. We should keep buying from abroad and conserve our own resources. We should definitely be up in Alaska surveying and doing the preliminary work to find out what is there, how to get it out and how to get it south, but we shouldn't be fueling today’s SUVs with it.

People are throwing around 6 month/24 year supply/replace all our Saudi oil to whatever means will support their argument.

Here's my conjecture/educated guess. If we were able to pump it out, transport, refine, and distrubute all the oil from the refuge it would supply the US for six months. That's still a lot of oil at the rates this country uses it.

At the rates the oil is discovered, drilled, pumped, transported, refined, and distributed there would be about 20+ years of drilling up there.

Anybody seen a pie graph of where we get our oil from? We actually don't import that big a share from the middle east. We buy much from Nigeria, Mexico, Canada, and Venezuela in addition to many other OPEC countries. The Saudis still pump the most oil, just not that big a cut is going to us. That's why it's easy to say that this oil would replace the Saudi imports.

I've seen some of the facilities up on the North Slope. They seem to be cleanly run. A caribou ran across our runway when we broke out on short final at Kopuruk, guess he didn't mind the big gravel runway in his patch or tundra. I was told they actually congregate to get out of the muskeg and get some relief from mosquitos. I'm not normally in favor of exploiting our national parks for resources but I'm in grudging support of this one, I think it's needed. But it's a drop in the bucket in terms of our energy solutions, we need to develop new sources of energy and conserve more. And yea I drive an SUV (small Jeep) and I sleep ok at nights but I'm not blind to the problems that our collective consumption brings.
