Too bad the envior wackos won't let us drill off the West Coast, the Gulf and in Alaska. If we could drill in these places we could just tell the Habibi's and Mr. Azzhole in Venezuela to fug off.

Blzr,

What did you think about the Department of Energy Study?

PEAKING OF WORLD OIL PRODUCTION:
IMPACTS, MITIGATION, & RISK MANAGEMENT
http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications...aking_NETL.pdf

Robert Hirsch of the DOE says that in order to prevent extreme financial disaster, we need to start replacing oil with intense effort 20 years ahead of time.

The U.S. imports almost 2/3 of their oil. Coal turned to oil will take many years to even begin as the first plant hasn't been built yet in the U.S.

Read the DOE study and tell me if I'm crazy.

The world uses 1000 barrels a second. That's 42,000 gallons a second. The world is about to have to live with 40,000 gallons a second, then 38,000 gallons a second and less and less and less per year.

The DOE says that if Peak Oil occurs in the next 20 years the economy will suffer a lot. The DOE even admits that a lot of experts are predicting 2007-2012 as the peak year.

Blzr I really want to hear your comments after reading the DOE paper. I want to know if I should worry or not. They talk about coal to oil, how fast the oil sands can be ramped up, unforseen big oil finds that will only delay peak oil by maybe a year, hybrids and everything else imaginable. They say replacing the stuff is going to take many, many trillions and TIME. TIME is something the DOE admits we're running out of.

Robert Hirsch of the DOE said in interviews that the study scared his team to death. He said they only published the best case scenarios and even those scared their team immensely. There are many other informed people like him that are scared.

Please tell me what you think of the DOE study.

Jet

I think you hear all the news about peak oil and the world running out of oil to scare the beJesus out of everybody and keep prices high.

I have heard about the oil sands in Canada, that when we get the process of refining perfected (which is alot closer than we are hearing) OPEC and morons like Chavez in Venesuala will not be able to hold the world hostage to their prices. Many believe (company execs) that the Oil from Canada will be sold mainly in THIS hemisphere and not as much going to China and developing nations. Let Saudi Arabia handle them.

Next, The world has been around for Billions of years and started making fossil fuels the next day (almost). We won't run out of it, just have a hard time getting to it. But like everything else, what seems impossable now will be routine in a few decades. It'll all work out.

In the USA, diesel prices are high because demand for diesel is not elastic. If gasoline goes up, the consumer will adjust his demand by cutting back on nonessential driving. On the other hand, diesel is the fuel of industry, agriculture and transportation. For example, a farmer can't decide to plant less corn in April just because diesel is high. The corn must be planted and it will take X number of gallons per acre to get the seeds into the ground. Inelastic demand. The same goes for the trucker shipping the corn meal from the mill to the grocer. When you gotta have it, youz pays more for it. It's the American way.

Be that as it may, I can't help but believe that big oil is in collusion and the biggest reason for high prices in this country has to do with lack of competition in the fields of refining and distribution. We could help by relaxing the environmental regs that hamstring the refining process. But, I'm cynical enough to think that the oil companies would just pocket the difference, leaving us with the same pump price.

Well about to go to work but have to post.

You guys obviously haven't grasped the scope of the problem. Oh well.

READ THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY STUDY!!!
http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/pdf/Oil_Peaking_NETL.pdf

http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/pdf/Oil_Peaking_NETL.pdf

http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/pdf/Oil_Peaking_NETL.pdf

http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/pdf/Oil_Peaking_NETL.pdf

Blzr, you obviously didn't read the Department of Energy report. Obviously.

Yes we are going to have to drill in Alaska. Yes we're going to have to drill off both U.S. coasts including Florida and California. Soccer Moms in their SUV's will be begging oil companies to drill in these areas soon.

We're going to turn coal to oil. We're going to use the oil shale, oil sands, etc.

Conservation will be the best thing possible. We're going to have to find a different way to make pesticides and fertilizers in America besides using fossil fuels. We're going to have to stop making PLASTICS or RECYCLE EVERYTHING. Glass will have to make a major comeback on everything. Etc. etc.

From the Department of Energy report Blzr doesn't want to read:
The current Canadian vision is to produce a total of about 5 MM bpd of products from oil sands by 2030. This is to include about 3 MM bpd of synthetic crude oil from which refined fuels can be produced, with the remainder being poorer quality bitumen that could be used for energy, power, and/or hydrogen and petrochemicals production. 5 MM bpd would represent a five-fold increase from current levels of production.82 Another estimate of future production states that if all proposed oil sands projects proceed on schedule, industry could produce 3.5 MM bpd by 2017, representing 2 MM bpd of synthetic crude and 1.5 MM bpd of unprocessed lower-grade bitumen.
Decline rates for the worldwide oil production are supposed to be about 3-4% or more. So we'll be losing about 3 million barrels of oil/year from worldwide production. OK SO THE OIL SANDS TOOK CARE OF ONE YEAR'S LOSS by 2017. Too bad peak oil is in the next couple years plus, you know I'm bored.

Blzr you're not stupid. Educate yourself. Oil sands are not oil. They are sand. You have to dig it up, and use natural gas which is about to go into decline in North America or nuclear or coal plants to turn it into oil. Even Canada is building Liquified Natural Gas ports to bring in Natural gas now. We used to think we had an infinite amount of NG.

Coal to oil will be the the most effective measure. Ethanol is a joke and takes more energy to make than it gives. Cellulosic ethanol on the other hand has potential but they don't even have the first full-scale plant built yet and it will replace less than 1% of our oil needs in 10 years.

I could go on and on, but this is where I get bored. There are people like Blzr that will call me a scaremonger, when I'm trying to do a good thing for the world. I'm trying to help everyone's children. We need to all wake up!!

We need to be dumping 10X more money into these projects and drilling in Alaska, making every new car A PLUG-IN HYBRID, Developing NUCLEAR PLANTS all across America, Making COAL-TO-OIL PLANTS which there are NONE right now. ETC. ETC. ETC.

These things should have been done in the 70's. We shouldn't have the coming problem, but we do. We're shortsighted and UNINFORMED.

First we have to realize there's a problem and noone realizes it!!

Blzr, questioning my motives, is ok, but you're wrong. I care about us all more than you think. I am one of hundreds running around trying to wake people up. Bush knows. He's told us we're addicted to oil. He's had meetings with Roscoe Bartlett and Matthew Simmons about peak oil. He's trying to do his part and I wish he'd do more. Roscoe Bartlett, Republican, has spoken in Congress 10+ times now giving speeches shown on C-SPAN. He's scared to death. He's calling for a MANHATTAN PROJECT FOR ENERGY.

BLZR READ THE DOE REPORT. You'll realize it's not going to be as simple as drilling in Alaska and Raping Canada of their oil sands. Unfortunately one day you'll realize that.

I'm getting tired of talking about this. I really am like a broken record lately. I could sit here and dispute this for hours, but I'm going to go on my trip and not even post for a while.

I'll come back after my trip, and people will be posting how we'll be saved by hybrids or hydrogen cars or something. YEa we'll be saved, huhh, huhhh, huhh<---like Beavis. That Jetflyer is just a scaremongerer, yea huhh, huhhh, huhh.

Oh well, think what you want. I just ask you all to educate yourselves. After you educate yourself, educate others.

I unfortunately have learned the scope of the problem and it is frightening. Unfortunately because people are so shortsighted and confident in quick techno-fixes our slow pace to deal with a very scary problem is going to show everyone the scope of the problem in the next couple years.

Department of Energy Study on why there are no quick fixes to our energy problem and why 20 years will be needed to prevent severe economic hard times from Peak Oil:

http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/pdf/Oil_Peaking_NETL.pdf

If you think there is a simple solution you JUST DO NOT GET IT. You just do not get the scope of the problem. Learn more, and the more you learn, the more you'll understand this is for real and is not going to be easy.

The U.S. GOVERNMENT DOE study will have your answers about hybrids, alaskan oil, conservation, coal to oil, ethanol, etc. I'm done.

Jetflyer,

Dude, its getting old man. Yes yes we know that you think the world is coming to an end and that peak oil is going to be the cause of it.

The only time you contribute to this board is when the discussion turns to fuel and you post all these "doom and gloom" reports from supposed experts. Furthermore you keep stating that you are going to work yet I have been checking flightinfo for the past 3 hours while doing chores around the house and you still are logged on and still viewing this thread. I think the world "fanatical" comes to mind when it comes to you and your view of "peak oil".

Just becuase you and the information you post states that peak oil is upon us doesn't mean that it is the gospel. There are many people smarter than you and me that claim that Peak oil is a bunch of bunk. Heck I just Googled peak oil a little while ago and came up with plenty of information stating why peak oil doesn't exist. (At least in our lifetime anyway)

Sorry that many on this board dont believe a word you are stating when it comes to all this peak oil bunk. I guess some people only feel ok when they are scared by the boogey man. In your case the boogey man is Peak Oil.

If it makes you feel any better I did by a hybrid car last week. Not because of peak oil but because I try not to fund Habib's palaces anymore than I have to.

127. PEAK OIL: TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

In my opinion, this is the best argument against peak oil causing the collapse of modern civilization: it's too good to be true. The idea that we could be magically released from the stifling, inane rat race which governs our lives is appealing -- so appealing in fact, that we should be very suspicious of it.

The post-peak utopia is not going to arrive for the simple reason that it is a utopia.

Read the above sentence again, and let it sink in. Both the hard doomers and the softer relocalization peakniks like Heinberg deceive themselves by failing to fully appreciate the weight of that statement. They are allowing their hopes and their dreams to color their sober judgment.

Here's a case study, killJOY from peakoil.com:
I don't hate America, but I do hate the government. I can't wait for it to collapse.
Naturally, killJOY is damn sure that peak oil will collapse the government. By an amazing coincidence, reality is going to obey his wishes.

My thinking is that the government is not going to collapse, because it's too good to be true. Think about it carefully and see if you don't agree. It's a very strong argument -- a sort of wisdom, something an old man would say to you.

I get skeptical when people start talking about the "good side of peak oil" -- like my friend bart who (understandably) longs for: "healthy, delicious food; beautiful, hand-crafted tools and homes; satisfying relationships and communities. "

It's a chapter out of Sigmund Freud, Civilization and its Discontents. Industrialism, crass consumption, debt-based fiat money, the rat race, the gubmint, environmental devastation... Whatever your peeve with the modern world is, peak oil is going to wipe it off the face of the earth, and lead us (after the "Tribulations", of course) into the New Jerusalem.

It's a form of wishful thinking, and that's why the rejoinder "too good to be true" is such a good argument. It's like cutting the Gordian Knot. It's an argument without arguing, and it's effective.

Look at killJOY. He said " I can't wait for the government to collapse" months ago, and it's gotta be demoralizing now, what with Colin Campbell pushing peak oil back to 2010. Waiting for peak oil to lay waste to industrialism, globalism and government is like waiting for Godot, or Jesus. He never comes. What makes you think you're so special -- that you'll live to see The Endtimes?

It's like a child with a lottery ticket, telling his mother. "I'm gonna be the winner, Mom! I Just know it!!"

There's no argument to prove to the kid that he's wrong. He's just having a hyper, emotional response, and you have to help him calm down. You can't reason with him about it, because he'll just keep confabulating.

The best approach, of course, is to tell the kid: "You're not going to win. It's too good to be true."

The message: You're over-excited, son. It's better to calm down. The world doesn't work neatly like that. It's messy, and sloppy, and full of friction and tenacity and delay. The "good guys" don't win.

I think economically there may be hard times coincidient with peak oil. But why worry? There's nothing I can do about it.

Naturally, killJOY is dang sure that peak oil will collapse the government. By an amazing coincidence, reality is going to obey his wishes.

The wish is often the father to the thought.

Hey Dangerkitty:

Keep the posts comming. It's good to see someone that has an IQ post on here.(I'm not included in that). Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders.

I work for people that have made a fortune in the energy buisness because they don't listen to the DOE. Takes a well rounded person to look at it from all sides.

Wow, I can't believe this.... people just don't seem to get it.

We all b*tch about how the airlines have lost their pricing power, and how the tickets are too cheap. Well, if you want to go coast to coast, you have a boatload of airlines to choose from.

In the mid to late 90's, the oil industry was in the same shambles as the airlines are in today - too many of them. What did they do? They consolidated. They became an oligopoly. That has dramatically improved their pricing power and profitability.

These guys are posting billions of dollars of profit PER QUARTER. We're paying for it... We all bitch about it, but you don't see us catching the subway, or buses or heavens-forbid ride our bicycles and get healthier along the way? Not nearly enough to offset the gouging. So yes, Habib's camel gets an ingrown toe nail, and the price shoots straight up to $70/barrel. Why? Because it can...

Conversely, we want the airline industry to recover? Let the mergers begin.

This is Y2K all over again. I'm still waiting for the lights to go out. Only this time my wallets getting a lot lighter.

Regardless of whether peak oil is true or not, we need to develop alternatives if for no other reason than to end our dependance on places like the middle east and venezuela. If our society is going to continue as we would like, we need to be energy independant. We can't keep wasting 100's of billions of dollars "stabilizing" a region of the world that does not want to be stabilized.

If this country can develop the nuclear bomb in what was basically the course of WWII, we can do this now (and yes, I am sure not all the research was in a 4-5 year period).

Like mdf said, alot of it is "Y2K" hype. People swore the end of civilization was coming due to that, building shelters, etc., etc.. However, I do agree we need to do something now if for no other reason than the paragraph above.

You honestly think the DOE is going to give you an honest outlook on Peak Oil? We are talking about the guys that are tools for the oil and gas industry here. Hell, they even appointed the Natioal Petroleum Council to study the issue of peak oil. Lets think about it here. Spread fear, get people scared, scared people approve more drilling, oil companies win.

Regardless though we need to get out asses out oil NOW. Barack Obama explains it best...

You make a good point, but let's make it really relevant. All those oil company mega-mergers are making somebody rich but it sure isn't the tanker truck driver...or even the super tanker captain. The continual decline of our profession will not be solved by a rejuvenation of the industry, in my humble opinion.

I'd like to tell you my views on these NUTTY PEAK OIL PEOPLE.

I personally think these nuts saying that oil is not a renewable resource and is going to get more rare in the near future are just scaremongerers.

People like vice president of Iran's national oil company:Samsan Bakhitari, Colin Campbell, advisor to Cheney and Bush:Matthew Simmons, Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, George Soros, T. Boone Pickens, and ex-CIA chief James Woolsey must be just giggling at how they're making people scared preaching their peak oil prophecies and telling people to start using renewable resources!!! God forbid!!

I think oil will go back to the historic $20.00/barrel any day now. This is what a lot of the experts are saying. HISTORY has always said that more oil will be found and the price will go back to its historic norm. Surely this will NEVER change. It's only higher because of the terrorism premium, and there are Nigerians kidnapping oil workers. When the oil workers are released oil will go to $20.00.

There is an infinite amount of oil in the ground. It is created in the center of the earth. It's called abiotic oil. Dead Dino remains?! HAH! Whatever!!! .... Scientists are such retards.

I wouldn't listen to biased retards like the U.S. govt.'s Department of Energy that says Peak Oil is going to be the biggest challenge of modern society!!!!!
Have you noticed how they've been trying to freak out the world, by making such a big deal of their early 2005 findings on Peak oil found here:
http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/pdf/Oil_Peaking_NETL.pdf
Scaremongering Retards!!! I think I've seen the govt. mention peak oil atleast 4 times a day over the last year since they did that study. Why are they trying to scare us. I bet it's to give the oil companies higher profits!! Bush is one of dem oil men, ya know.

Y2K Part 2 that's all this is. These people just need to scare people. Dang Chicken Littles. Wolf Cryers!! They don't feel right unless they're scared and scaring others. That must be it.

Everything will be just fine. Go along with your using of 1000 barrels a second of oil. We'll soon be using 1200 barrels a second of oil, then 1500 barrels a second.

There are no limits to how much oil we can use!! It's created in the center of the Earth!!

Also the oil companies are scamming us and just running up the price.

Did you know that in 1970, the U.S. produced 9.6 million barrels PER DAY of Oil!?

The UNITED STATES used to pump more oil than SAUDI ARABIA does today!!

Now the U.S. is only producing 5.4 million barrels per day and it falls every year even though they drill more oil wells and found Alaska's oil and the Gulf of Mexico oil since then.

Why is this?
It can't be as some claim that the U.S. reached its peak oil in 1970, as M. King Hubbert a Shell geologist predicted in 1956. He said that this is a natural geological process, that the pressure in the oil wells diminishes and even after pumping water or carbon in the wells that you'll eventually get less and less oil out every year.

This is impossible because there is an infinite amount of oil in the ground. It's created in the center of the earth.

I think the oil companies are choosing to produce only half as much oil as they did in the 1970's so they can run up the price. Then they'll save their oil for when it's really expensive.

Chevron claims at their "Move Past Oil Site":
http://www.willyoujoinus.com/issues/alternatives/
that 33 out of the world's 48 major oil producers have passed their peak oil production and are in decline like the United States. Here is the quote:
Oil production is in decline in 33 of the 48 largest oil producing countries, yet energy demand is increasing around the globe as economies grow and nations develop.
I think Chevron is lying to us all!! They're part of the SCAREMONGERING PHONEY Peak Oil crowd. They're trying to convince us, with Bush's help, that we're running out of oil. The elites are trying to run up the price so they can profit and make money off us little people.

It's all a grand conspiracy!!

Bottom line is that the U.S. could pump oil at 9.6 million barrels a day like they did in the 1970's if they wanted to, and we wouldn't have the problems we're having now.

The oil companies are CHOOSING to pump 4.2 million barrels less per day today than in 1970, even though they have brought on the Alaskan Slope and Gulf of Mexico oil since then!!

It's a crime!

America did not pass no phoney Peak Oil in 1970. Malarchy! Bologna sandwich!! Horse Manure!!!

It's all a conspiracy by dee elites!

Plus Chevron is lying by saying 33 of the 48 major oil producers have passed their peak oil, like the United States! BOLOGNA SANDWICH!!

Dang Conspiracy. We's needs a congressional investigashun!! I's tells ya!

Dude, enough of the rant. I agree that we are going to eventually run out of oil. The gov, and big oil need to stop telling all of us why they are bending us over on price, and start coming up with solutions. We got alternatives now, they just won't mainstream them until it is convienient for them.

You are beginning to sound like the AIDS activists of the late 80's and early 90's. They all claimed that AIDS was going to spread and mushroom until the entire civilization of Earth had AIDS and we all died.

Still waiting on that one to come to fruition.

I guess US Air has to come up with another new business plan now. What revision are we on now . . . number 13?

I don't understand? I totally think peak oil is made up dude. We're completely on the same page bro.

It's nuts like Robert Hirsch that co-authored the report on Peak Oil by the DOE that are nuts.
They let this nutjob address Congress!!
Here is a couple page transcript of his findings from the DOE report on peak oil THAT HE PRESENTED TO CONGRESS:
TESTIMONY ON PEAK OIL
Dr. ROBERT L. HIRSCH, SENIOR ENERGY PROGRAM ADVISOR, SAIC. BEFORE THE HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND AIR QUALITY
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2005.
http://www.tomudall.house.gov/pdf/PeakOilHearingHirschtestimony120705.pdf

Here are the predictions of people around the world on when Peak Oil will occur, that he told CONGRESS:

Notably China's expert predicts 2012. Iran's predicts 2006-7.

Projected Date Source of Projection Background & Reference
2006-2007 Bakhitari, A.M.S. Oil Executive (Iran)
2007-2009 Simmons, M.R. Investment banker (U.S.)
After 2007 Skrebowski, C. Petroleum journal editor (U.K.)
Before 2009 Deffeyes, K.S. Oil company geologist (ret., U.S.)
Before 2010 Goodstein, D. Vice Provost, Cal Tech (U.S.)
Around 2010 Campbell, C.J. Oil geologist (ret., Ireland)
After 2010 World Energy Council World Non-Government Org.
2012 Pang Xiongqi Petroleum Executive (China)
2010-2020 Laherrere, J. Oil geologist (ret., France)
2016 EIA nominal case DOE analysis/ information (U.S.)
After 2020 CERA Energy consultants (U.S.)
2025 or later Shell Major oil company (U.K.)

In my opinion, they're all nutjob lunatics, because oil will never run out. It is created in the center of the earth. Duhhh. ABIOTIC OIL RULES.

These scaremongerers above should get a life. Shell's prediction of Peak Oil is 2025. I can't believe Shell even has nutjobs believing this peak oil thing.

SPEECH TO CONGRESS: TESTIMONY ON PEAK OIL
Dr. ROBERT L. HIRSCH, SENIOR ENERGY PROGRAM ADVISOR, SAIC. BEFORE THE HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND AIR QUALITY
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2005.
http://www.tomudall.house.gov/pdf/PeakOilHearingHirschtestimony120705.pdf

This NUTJOB from the U.S. GOVT. DEPT. OF ENERGY gave the above speech to CONGRESS!! Read some of the wacky, out there comments he told CONGRESS about PEAK OIL:

The results were startling: Unless a mitigation crash program is started 20 years before peaking occurs, the economic consequences will be dire.
The world has never confronted a problem like peak oil.
The concept of the peaking of world oil production follows from the fact that the output of an individual oil field rises after discovery, reaches a peak, and then declines.
If mitigation is too little, too late, world supply/demand balance will have to be achieved through massive demand destruction and shortages, which would translate to extreme economic hardship. On the other hand, with timely mitigation, economic damage can be minimized.
This Moron thinks we need to get off oil to avoid economic hardship. Bologna. Keep burning it boys. It will never run out!
Chinese officials have forecast the peaking of world oil production around the year 2012.
Previous energy transitions (wood to coal, coal to oil, etc.) were gradual and evolutionary; oil peaking will be abrupt and revolutionary.
This moron is trying to warn us of an IMAGINARY EVENT. PEAK OIL WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!

Who agrees with me that peak oil is fake and that Robert Hirsch of the DOE is a dummy :)?

Any of us are surely smarter than this so called EXPERT from the DOE that thinks trouble could lie ahead in our future from peak oil. What makes this guy an EXPERT anyways?

I think he just wants to see people scared and it's NOT that he's concerned for his uninformed and sleep-walking fellow Americans and his countries future at all,

What is this oil stuff?

All of the sudden I am feeling the urge to post in large bold letters about oil, could the chemtrails have caused this?

moving next week to Waco TX, found a good deal on some scourched earth.

Oil is not renewable on human timetable. It takes thousands to millions of years to produce. Oil does not come from the center of Earth. The center of Earth is solid inner core of Iron and nickel and outer liquid core of Iron. Oil does NOT come from dead trees or dinosaurs. It is from dead plankton and algae. I hope the above posts were a joke that i didnt get. ofcourse there are a lot of common misconceptions out there.

The oil peak is of heated debate. As more technology emerges we are able to tap into areas that were either technologically and/or economically infeasible. One thing is for certain - there will be a peak if not already. This peroid in human history will be noted as "The Oil Age" in history books.

So you believe this peak oil bunk the Department of Energy expert Robert Hirsch was talking about????? He says we may have extreme financial hardship if we don't start replacing oil 20 years before peak, but then he says we may be at peak oil now!!!???

This would like mean, dude, that I'm gonna have to sell my Hummer!!??

ABIOTIC OIL. Do a research. It's why peak oil will never happen.

Because there's an infinite amount of oil from the center of the earth.

Are you a Scaremongerer!!??? Doomsdayer!!?????

Abiotic Oil: Science or Politics?
By
Ugo Bardi

[Ugo Bardi is professor of Chemistry at the University of Florence, Italy. He is also member of the ASPO (Association for the study of peak oil). He is the author of the book "La Fine del Petrolio" (the end of oil) and of several studies on oil depletion.
Ugo Bardi offers a simple assessment of the abiotic theory. His logic is so clear, and the culmination of his argument is so cogent, that even a child could understand it. And the conclusion is inescapable - at least to honest enquiry - abiotic theory is false, or at best irrelevant. -DAP]
