NWA is wasted I loved to see how all the unions worked together. Whats up with the scab aircraft mechanics???? And all the union work groups alpa too did not one thing to help out the mechanics. But are working side by side with them. I guess like stated before NWA is truly pathetic
 
I'd Pay

I'd gladly pay extra for a garunteed exit row. Most people over 6'4" would, I really love it when I get on a plane and see three 5' something people sitting there as I wedge myself into the middle seat of a 757 in back.
 
Just think of what a down trodden low life you will feel like while slipping into the middle seat, some trailer trash enjoying the window will no doubt look at you with disgust. Sure, try explaining to them it was the only seats left- not beause you could not cough up another 15.$$

I guess RJ flights can now charge extra for all the premium seating!
 
They should charge for carry on bags.

the passengers......you're all supplementing their vacation with your pay cuts!

I see a big problem with charging for an exit row seat. It's one of the dumber ideas I've seen but nothing from NWA management surprises me.

Scenario to consider - Gate agent mistakenly "sells" exit row seat to a passenger who is unqualified (per FAR's) to sit there. We all know from experience that gate agents occasionally assign exit row seats improperly. FA determines the passenger is not supposed to be seated in the exit row. Now you have a problem. The passenger has a sense of entitlement to his/her exit row seat. After all they paid extra for it. So what now? Will the FA have some way of crediting the customer's credit card? I feel sorry for the NWA FA's that will have to deal with the aftermath of this stupid idea. It's going to cause delays and frustration for employees and passengers alike. On a typical narrow body aircraft they would make more money if they charged fifty cents more per ticket than they would selling exit rows and desirable seats for a premium. If they had so much as half a brain they would try to assign the better seats to those that paid more money for an unrestricted fare. Why not just give the better seats to those people paying more for a ticket in the first place. Give them something to feel good about.

You people make me sick. I just hope you're not the same people that bitch endlessly about fares being so low and if managemant would just raise fares pilots would be able to make $ like the old days and all our problems would be solved. The simple fact is that if NWA gets these charges to stick, it will add precious funds to combat ridiculous fuel costs and they will be quickly copied by the rest of the industry. If a customer backlash materializes that negates the benefit of the charges then they will be discontinued, simple as that. You have to hand it to NWA for at least trying SOMETHING to increase revenue!!! Or am I the idiot?!?!?!?

Your the idiot.........all that extra revenue is lining the executives pockets. Just an extra bonus for them next year while the rest of the work group takes it in the rear!

I just saw the story on NBC nightly news and was just as pissed as everyone else on this thread. Rediculous to say the least!

Perhaps they should of gone along with the 29 or so fare hikes that were attempted by other carriers over the last several years.

But why bother increasing revenue when you can run to the employees and whine for more pay cuts.
 
I'm 6-3", 235 pounds, and I think I'm pretty much not on their radar screen as a customer, anyway (I hang 2 inches over at the shoulders on either side of a coach class seat).

If I can get an exit row seat, great. If I can get it for free at another carrier, I'll go there. What NWA doesn't realize is: 90% of us fly on our company's nickel, but a company ain't gonna pay a bump to get an exit row seat. So I'll just book on somebody else... they WILL pay for that.
 
I know this was said earlier, but it bears repeating.

I can't tell you how many times one of our FA's have come up to the front and said we are gonna be late because the NW agents put a blind no speak UM in the exit row and they have to rearrange the cabin seating.

The agents put whoever they want, wherever they want just as long as the pax don't hassle them until boarding. Let the FA's worry about it. Now the "spill" will have to include who paid up and who didn't. Huge delays while the captain sorts out who the deadbeats are and who is trying to screw their beloved NW outta 15 bones.

Yeah, this will work.
 
This story made the NBC Nightly News with a very negative spin. However, Brian Williams failed to mention that a coach seat that cost $750 in 1975 now costs $200 not even adjusted for inflation. Must be less than a tenth now in adjusted dollars of what it used to cost. Seems that $15 could be added to the cost of every seat.

Nevertheless, Northwest didn't do a good job of presenting this new pricing model. They should have just said what this really is--a kind of extortion: "If you don't want to sit in a center seat between the two linebackers-turned-business-traveler give us $15."
 
Northwest Introduces Coach Choice on Domestic Flights

In a continued effort to generate revenue, Northwest introduced Coach Choice on domestic flights on March 14. Coach Choice provides late-booking customers with additional seat choice and comfort by saving a small number of preferred coach seat assignments until check-in. Customers can purchase these preferred aisle and exit seats for a $15 fee during self-service check-in within 24 hours prior to departure. WorldPerks Elite members can purchase these seats 36 hours prior to departure via nwa.com. Coach Choice seats are available on all domestic Northwest and Northwest Airlink-operated flights (excluding CRJs). If successful, Coach Choice will be introduced on flights from the U.S. to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean this summer.

Yep...and it's almost always full. But it's actually very noticable from a normal coach seat.

The only good part I see about this is that they are actually charging the public for something..other than another way of squeezing more money out of the employees...they days of paying for that coke/pepsi are not far away...

March 16, 2006 -- You shouldn't be shocked that a Big Six airline is trying to charge for "choice" seat assignments in coach. In the pantheon of as-yet untried dumb ideas that will further complicate the Byzantine fare structure and drive the Big Six closer to irrelevance, this bonehead play was inevitable.

You shouldn't be surprised that the first Big Six carrier to try charging for a "choice" coach seat assignment is Northwest Airlines. Historically the first with the very worst, it was pre-ordained that Northwest would try to separate the crap from the chaff and suggest you should pay more for the merely crappy.

And you shouldn't be perplexed that there's a cadre of quotable talking-head "experts" who suggest that Northwest's pay-to-sit plan might be a good idea. These idiots never miss a chance to defend conventional airline wisdom, which has led to five Big Six bankruptcies and tens of billions of dollars in losses since 9/11.

No, my friends, there is only one thing notable about Northwest's decision to charge $15 a pop for what it has labeled Coach Choice seats: It is unabashedly aimed at ripping off the travelers who show Northwest Airlines the most loyalty, generate the most revenue and usually pay the highest fares.

Instead of going after its least loyal, most ephemeral and least-profitable flyers--a move Air Canada made last year when it added a seat-assignment fee on its cheapest class of fares--Northwest Airlines has come after its best customers. It has said in no uncertain terms that the frequent flyers who have done the most to keep Northwest in the air now should pony up again if they have any hope of being even slightly less uncomfortable when they fly this mildewed skeleton of an airline.

If you haven't done more than hear about Northwest's "test" of Coach Choice, click here to do a little homework on it. As a businessperson, you will be stunned at the monumental stupidity of the program and the callous disregard of the airline's most important customers. And if you want to feel the outrage of Northwest's best customers, surf to FlyerTalk.com and check out the WorldPerks message board. As a businessperson, you'll be taken aback at the vitriol that Northwest' best customers are now directing at their most important air-travel supplier.

The conceptual and operational flaws of Coach Choice are obvious from a mile away. I'd say it's a plan only an airline executive could love, but that's not really fair. Even most of the airline executives I talked to after Northwest unleashed this bomb on Tuesday thought it was a colossal disaster. They're not against charging you for boarding passes or prime seat assignments, you understand, they just can't believe that Northwest could have cooked up a program this lame.

Coach Choice is based on a gruesome calculation: Take away as many as ten of the least uncomfortable coach chairs on selected Northwest flights and deprive WorldPerks elite customers of that inventory when they first book passage. Then, 72 hours before departure, turn around and sell those same seats to those same customers at a $15 premium.

"Now I understand why some of our customers believe that we think they are stupid," a marketing executive at one of Northwest's Big Six competitors told me today. "We're looking at charging for seat assignments, too, but Northwest's execution is really ugly. It's guaranteed to bring in the least revenue and cause the most disaffection."

Besides the general offensiveness of the Coach Choice plan, Northwest has also thrown in some truly despicable twists:
+ The $15 charge is per flight segment, not per trip. Since a huge number of Northwest itineraries are routed through its hubs in Minneapolis, Detroit and Memphis, we're actually talking about a $60 roundtrip surcharge.
+ Full-fare and walk-up coach fares do not qualify for a fee waiver if the traveler wants one of the Coach Choice seats. Worse, an early booker on an ultra-cheap fare can score a prime seat for just $15 more, while a full-fare customer, who may have paid three or four times more than the early booker, gets no seating preference.
+ If Coach Choice is even modestly successful, last-minute, full-fare flyers, who pay the most, will be forced into inferior seats--probably middle seats--on crowded flights.
+ Elite customers who pay for a Coach Choice seat do not get a refund should they qualify for an at-the-gate upgrade to first class. Depending on how you look at it, that's either a blatant fare increase to qualify for an upgrade or a new fee on a "free upgrade."
+ If Northwest screws up and doesn't provide the Coach Choice seat for which a flyer paid, it's the flyer's responsibility to track down the refund. It won't be issued automatically.

And think about the in-flight, operational nightmares involved with a program like this. (It's obvious Northwest didn't.) Here are just three scenarios that pop immediately to mind:
+ Will flight attendants be required to police the seats? If Coach Choice seats don't sell out, there will obviously be a rush for them after the doors close. Will flight attendants be required to eject travelers who've moved from the "non-choice" seats?
+ What happens when a traveler who pays for a Coach Choice seat discovers that the overhead bin above his supposedly choice seat has been filled with luggage stowed by a non-choice seat customer? After paying the premium, will the "choice" customer be the one forced to gate-check a carry-on bag?
+ What happens when a Coach Choice flyer is also a very late-arriving passenger and another traveler has been reassigned to that supposedly choice seat?

As always with these misbegotten Big Six idiocies, the bottom line is the bottom line. This program is so badly designed, so poorly conceived and so complicated that it will invariably cost Northwest Airlines more money to administer than it could ever hope to generate in fees. And who knows how many once-loyal Northwest Airlines customers will decide that Coach Choice is the last straw and take their fare dollars to Delta or Continental, where their WorldPerks status is also recognized?

Of course, the truth must be told: Coach travel on the Big Six, and especially Northwest, is abominable. Some of our fellow travelers will undoubtedly cough up $15 a segment for a Coach Choice seat and rationalize it by pleading the need to escape from the even more hellish conditions of a non-choice coach seat.

Don't hate the frequent flyers who pay. Pity them. They are the ones who, because of route-network realities or corporate policy, simply have no choice but to fly Northwest Airlines.

And that's a fate I don't wish even on the fools who invented Coach Choice.
