Did NWA suspend their hiring?

Heard a rumor that NWA is suspending any future interviews beyond what's currently scheduled. Can anyone confirm or add to this?

I have heard this. They apparently have enough in the pool for all classes scheduled through April or Mid may and do not see a reason to keep interviewing at this time. It not to say that they will not start again, but for now the pool will be utilized.
DAL is going to 100 per month for March and possibly April.
Interesting times.

Can you say F-U-R-L-O-U-G-H. It won't be long. I would stay clear of both NWA/DAL. They are yanking your chain if your are even thinking of going there. You will be on the street in two years if not sooner. Mark my words.

Is it me or the folks that haven't gotten hired by a major on the recent hiring boom seem to take pleasure on throwing the furlough word around? As if they would want to justify the fact that they haven't gotten hired as "good luck"

Things that make you go Hum?

I must admit that thought crosses my mind every time I see one of these posts. Its not just regional guys though. There are others that feel like they are on the outside looking in and not entirely happy with their current situation. Take the guy above. He worked for Mesaba and now less than a year or so at Airtran. He has been all up and down these boards saying he will leave Airtran if a good contract isn't hammered out. This same guy looks across the tarmac at Delta with contempt. It is much the same with tankerclown and a handful of other trolls on here. Sad really. There are guys who no matter their position know that a bar raised at one carrier in pay for example is a potential victory for all. Others are more interested in trashing the dream job they feel they might never have.

Just like the merger between USAir and AWA, right? Nobody was furloughed when those two became a combo. Delta (via Anderson) has already said CVG will not be closing. MEM is a small mainline hub, with mainly RJs feeding it (Mesaba Saabs and Pinnacle RJs), and probably around 45-50 daily mainline flights total. Delta is currently hiring for our INTL growth to cities that neither DL nor NWA go to right now.

Will there be a furlough? Doubtful. Could it happen? Maybe. I would be very surprised if Moak and his counterpart at NWA didn't make sure there was a new no furlough clause, which normally does work well, unless there is a huge 9-11 type event that slows airline traffic. (even a slowing economy doesn't slow airline traffic normally, thanks to stronger economies in other countries sending pax over here)

If you are an RJ pilot, then I would be worried, since the RJ market is looking at a severe restructuring itself.

Yeah, I've been "throwing it around" because anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that a combined NWA and Delta won't have any use for DC9's.

No furlough clause? Thank God AA had one or I might have gotten laid off...oops, never mind...

Any promises made by management prior to a merger are simply meaningless. If you are on the bottom of either list and don't have a plan, you are asking for trouble. TC

Do you really think they will just PARK all of the 68 larger DC9s without replacing them? Really? Give up market share and just replace them (even though they have more seats than the DC9-30s and all of those wonderful CR9s or E175s)? Really? NWA said their current hiring takes into account the parking of about 30 DC9-30s this year, and they are still hiring. (or willing to drain their pool).

Those larger DC9s will be replaced eventually (maybe MD90s or new 737NGs), but not overnight. And, any agreements in writing will be enforced, unless there is a BK and a judge is watching. Do you think that will happen immediately too? Do you?

Yes, our no-furlough clause had a Force Mejeur clause, and it was used after 9-11. In fact, they furloughed a bit too many, and after a grievance many were brought back by an arbitrator. It can be enforced and was challenged and our guys won via an arbitrator, with pay.

I spent 4 yrs, 11 mos, 20 days on furlough. Not that I'm counting. I could easily spend the same amount of time on furlough again.

Furloughs are a way of life in this business. Anyone who is on the bottom of any seniority list should have furlough plans; if you don't, you're in for quite a shock if it happens.
I'll keep my furlough plans in place until I've got 10% below me. And the post-911 downturn proved that you're still not safe with 10% below you.

I wouldn't decline a job due to worry about being furloughed, but I'd sure have an alternate plan. One where I put nonflying skills to use.

I agree with the General (this time that is) The combined carrier will most likely slow down hiring for a while until the plans for consolidation are ironed out and even after they have a defined plan of action, it will take some time to implement (years) The DC-9's will eventually be replaced, not just parked. What will be really interesting to watch will be the dynamics of integration of the two pilot groups, they have the advantage that being both legacy carriers their pilot groups don't have the seniority based problems that the USAirways debacle had. Seniority based (DOH) integration is a possible solution if "pride" doesn't get in the way.
Maybe I'm a "glass half full" kind of guy, but I believe that a great airline could emerge from all of this
