NWA 747 SO Training

Anyone know what the typical training schedule is for SO on the 747 at NWA?

Is it the same as a flying position?
ie Indoc, Systems, 40 hours sim, IOE, etc? How long does it take? Do they pay for the FE Written?

As far as I know, the FE written is required before the interview. That may have changed, but I am reasonably certain that is required before you start class.

Indoc is 2 weeks, and I think systems class is also 2 weeks. Weekends off during ground school.

Bank on 9 sims and a checkride, so that'd be 2 weeks minimum, and days off scattered in there. OE after that. Figure on at least a 2 month training cycle.

I start in about a week and a half, and don't have the written. As far as I know they haven't told me to show up with it - hope I'm right.

That schedule is about what I was expecting. I just wasn't sure if the SO was a more abbreviated sim or IOE training, since I would guess there are fewer things to cover (such as airwork, maneuvers, etc).

FE written is not required for the interview, but since they seem to be having a problem with attrition in ANC for that position me thinks it couldn't hurt. I know it caught their attention at the interview when I told them that I had already knocked down the written. You don't have to show up for ground school with it either. From what I have heard, whatever that is worth, NWA does pay for the written if awarded a SO slot after showing up. If not, what are you going to do? Quit ground school over a $300 one day course to accomplish the written? I think not.

Thats correct it isnt required. I asked they said that it might change and become a requirement though. They do pay for the written if you are assigned the panel. FWIW

I think for you the more important thing would be to study up on how to operate the oven and coffee maker. And get some warm clothes too.

Not a bad deal if you are single. Also, no seat lock on 1st aircraft so you can bid off as soon as you can if you don't like it.

FWIW...Took my medical the other day in MSP, the Captain on flight to MSP said possible 747-200 base in MSP for charters(most all to be reserve lines). I know MSP is very senior AND don't count on anything until it happens but who knows what will take place. Just thought it may be interesting to discuss.

Depends on what the ropes do as well as how many pilots will retire "early". There has already been about 9 new hires get SO over the past few months.
