Boeing says not offering jets to Spirit Airlines
Friday February 13, 6:37 pm ET

SEATTLE, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA - News), the No. 2 jetliner maker, said on Friday it was not offering aircraft to privately held Spirit Airlines, despite media reports that the carrier was shopping for narrow-body jets.

"We do not currently have an offer on the table at Spirit and at present we do not have plans to make one," said Boeing spokesman Nicolaas Groeneveld-Meijer.

News reports have said Ft. Lauderdale, Florida-based Spirit was negotiating an equity sale to Los Angeles investment firm Oaktree Capital Management, LLC (News - Websites) , worth more than $100 million and then might buy jets from Boeing or rival Airbus SAS (XETRA:EAD.DE - News; Paris:EAD.PA - News).

Both Spirit and Oaktree have declined to comment.

What exactly does that mean??

An extended 717 to match the size of the MD80?

I'll venture a guess that it means that Spirit has already signed a deal with Airbus. Or possibly it could mean that Dr. Schorr went too far in playing one manufacturer against the other and this is Boeings way of sending a shot across his bow.

BTW, I work for Spirit, which means that I have ABSOLUTELY zero knowledge of what is actually going on.:)

I hear you, I work for Alteon (Boeing) & I have not heard a thing as well. Would be kind of strange for Boeing to have not made a sales pitch.

Mike, I believe that you guys did make a pitch, numerous pitches in fact.

As I have written before, I am about as far from being in the know at my place of employement as one could be. I do however, seem to remember that Boeing made a big pitch about 18 months ago.

For those not up to speed with Spirit, we are the largest privately owned airline in the country. It is my opinion that our owners are businessmen who desire to reap the rewards available to those who take risks, but they want someone else to take those risks. I've always heard that when you play with someone elses money, you have to play by there rules. Spirits owners want to use other peoples money without playing by those moneymens' rules. As such, they have apparently attempted numerous times over the last two years to attract the money that would allow them to purchase a new fleet, but were never able to make the final deal. I imagine that the manufacturers, Boeing et al, are quite tired of making deal after deal, only to have Spirit back out when the money didn't come thru. Now, Boeing seems to have sent a message. "Don't bother wasting any more of our time"

The opinions are my own.
